The investigating officer (IO), Atamjit Singh, said Kashmiri Lal, a resident of Salema village, complained to the police that the suspects waylaid him and assaulted him and his colleague. They damaged his SUV and stole his mobile phone and documents. The IO said a case under Sections 323, 341, 427, 379, 506, 148, 149 of the IPC had been registered against the suspects. No arrest has been made in the case so far and raids are being carried out to nab the suspects. OC MAN NABBED FOR EXTORTION Nakodar: The Nakodar city police have arrested a person on the charges of extortion and criminal intimidation. The investigating officer (IO), Paramjit Singh, said the suspect had been identified as Gurwinder Singh, a resident Malarri village. The IO said that a case under Sections 387 and 506 of the IPC was registered against the suspect. OC Woman stabbed to death at home in daylight robbery Acting swiftly, police crack case within hours, two arrested Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 24 In a shocking development, a 49-year-old woman was stabbed to death by robbers in her home at Tara Singh Avenue here in Basti Bawa Khel on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Kamaljeet Kaur. As per the police, two robbers identified as Raj Kumar and Kamlesh Kumar entered the house from the main gate. Kamaljeet, her son Satbir and their house help were present inside the house when the incident took place. It was learnt that the robbers had an idea that the woman was alone in the house with her son, who is a minor. They saw Kamaljeet coming out of the house in the afternoon, and when she was going back, they took advantage of the situation, and the moment she entered, they too forcefully entered and closed the door. The woman's son was sleeping in his room, while house help was at the terrace. He said different teams were formed to nab the accused, and after gathering some vital leads, the police arrested Raj Kumar and Kamlesh from Salempur Musalmana village within a few hours. He said the accused, Raj Kumar, was a habitual offender, and a murder and drug smuggling case had already been registered against him. He said from the investiga- tion it was known that the robbery was the only motive behind the murder. "The woman started shouting for help. Fearing the neighbours would soon gather, the robbers attacked her and held her son hostage,” he said, adding that a case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code had been registered against them. The DCP said the police have also recovered 16 mobile phones, the weapon used in crime, a paper cutter, jewellery, DVR and some clothes soaked in blood from their possession. Kapurthala, January 24 In a tragic incident, an ASI posted with the traffic police at DC Chowk here died after being dragged and overrun by a mini truck at the naka on Tuesday afternoon. ASI Malkiat Singh had reportedly signalled the driver of Tata Ace (UP-11-CT1171) to stop at the naka, but he sped up to escape from being caught. During this, the jacket of the ASI reportedly got stuck in the commercial carrier and he got dragged to some distance with it. He was immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment but could not be saved. SSP Navneet S Bains said an alert was immediately sounded to nab the driver in Kapurthala and even the neighbouring districts. The mini truck is learnt to have gone towards Jalandhar side. The body has been kept at the mortuary for conducting postmortem. Jalandhar, January24 “I am not satisfied with my tenure as Mayor,” said Jagdish Raja (67) whose tenure ended today. He got in conversation with The Tribune and shared his feelings. According to the outgoing Mayor, his time as a councillor was better than as a mayor because of several compulsions. Raja faced opposition from his party councillors too, which he said always hurt him. On his last day in the office, Raja shared that people always misunderstood him and blamed him for the pending works which were ‘actually’ under the Smart City. Every time general house meeting happened, the mayor always found himself in the tight spot. Everyone would point fingers at him and he would always remain calm and patient. “I did not want to create any controversy by saying something in reply, which is why I used to remain quiet. But I always gave every councillor a chance to speak, unlike previous mayors who always passed agendas in minutes,” Raja said. “One thing I am confident about is that the development took place in every ward,” he shared, adding that he was always open to new ideas. “I am always open to improvement. TRIBUNE PHOTO 3 held with drugs, pistol, cartridges Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 24 The Jalandhar rural police on Tuesday arrested three persons in two separate incidents and recovered a countrymade pistol, four live cartridges, 100-gm heroin and a car from their possession. According to Superintendent of Police Sarabjit Singh Bahia, a police team led by ASI Gurmeet Singh conducted a raid at the house of Baljinder Singh at Mohaddipur village in Adampur. He said the accused managed to flee the spot. However, during checking a country-made pistol and four live cartridges were recovered. Bahia said Baljinder was a habitual offender and a number of cases for different crimes had been registered against him at two police stations falling under rural police jurisdiction. He said a case under Sections 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act had been registered against him, and the police were making all efforts to arrest him. In another incident, following a tip-off, the Adampur police team put up a naka on Jandu Singha road and stopped a Nissan Micra car (PB10HJ3577) for checking. In the car, three persons Baljit, Jagdish and Amandeep were present. During checking 100-gm heroin was recovered under the driver seat. A case under sections 21, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against them, and further investigation is underway. Nawanshahr, January 24 The Nawanshahr police claimed to have arrested a drug smuggler with 1-kg heroin and also recovered drug money from his possession. The accused has been identified as Gagandeep, alias Gagan, from Hoshiarpur who is a drug smuggler. “The police received information regarding the accused that he was present in the Kathgarh area, and if arrested immediately, a heavy quantity of heroin could be recovered from him. The case under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against Gagandeep,” the police said. “During further investigation of the case, Kathgarh SHO Parminder Singh nabbed Gagandeep who was seen coming from the Jandi Morh side while carrying a bag in his hand. He was produced in the court and his links were being investigated to take further action against them also, the police added. Book encroachers in Burj Hassan: BDPO Ashok Kaura NO OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION YET: BILGA SHO Phagwara, January 24 The Nurmahal Block Development and Panchayat Officer (BDPO) has asked the Bilga police to register cases against Burj Hassan villagers for encroaching on common village land. In an official communication to the Bilga station house officer (SHO), the BDPO said the common village land which had been vacated has been encroached upon again. The communication said this is causing a huge financial loss to the Burj Hassan village panchayat. The BDPO said a case under Section 13A of the Punjab Village Common Land Act,1961, be registered against 35 encroachers by name. The then District Development and Panchayat Officer (DDPO) Jarnail Singh had passed orders against 30 encroachers on March 9, 2004. He had also pro- nounced that Rs 5,000 per acre be recovered from the encroachers for the period from 1999 to 2003. The communication said the village panchayat was hand in glove with the encroachers, adding that the auction of the land was announced many times, but the panchayat did not cooperate. Nine years ago, the Nurmahal BDPO had written to the Bilga police to register cases against Burj Hassan villagers but to no avail. The BDPO, in a piece of information procured under the RTI Act, had said the Phillaur sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) was requested to impose Section 145 of the CrPC on the land to check the encroachers but no such action was taken. TRIBUNE PHOTOGRAPH Ash problem unresolved, residents gherao power plant in Nawanshahr Tribune News Service Nawanshahr, January 24 Despite rain and police barricading, Nawanshahr residents put up a massive protest in front of the co-generation plant today against dilly-dallying by the administration in solving the problem of ash emanating from the facility. A heavy police force was present at the site, and barricades were put to stop protesters from entering the power plant premises. However, the protesters, including residents and activists of various social, religious, political, trade, students and women organisations under the aegis of Lok Sangharsh Manch, gheraoed the power plant and staged a massive protest there. The SDM then asked the police to get the trolleys of paddy straw removed from the plant. On Monday, women residents of Shiv Nagar railway road locality staged a protest against the power plant officials by holding a broom in their hands. They said ash emanating from the plant had been adding to their woes as they had to clean the floors frequently. They said they were not able to put their clothes on the terrace to dry due to ash. “If the problem is not resolved, we will be forced to hold an indefinite strike,” the protesters said. Deputy Commissioner Navjot Pal Singh Randhawa said that the administration was quite serious about the matter and is making all-efforts to find a permanent solution to the problem. He said a number of meetings with all the stakeholders had been conducted for the purpose. “During the meeting conducted on January 17, no representative from the Lok Sangharsh Manch turned up despite repeated phone calls made to them. In the meeting, all modalities were discussed to ensure complete repair work of the power plant so that the problem of ash emanating from it could be solved between February 15 and 17,” he added.
