IO Raman Deep Kumar said the suspects have been identified as Sita Devi, Madhu Kumari and Surindra Ram, all residents of Bihar’s East Champaran district. Parshotam Lal of Sagar Pur village had complained to the Jalandhar (Rural) SSP that the one of the suspects had introduced himself as his relative settled in Portugal and duped him of ~7.50 lakh. The IO said a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act had been registered against the suspects and further investigation was on. OC ONE BOOKED FOR ABETTING SUICIDE Phagwara: The Nurmahal police have booked a person on the charge of abetting his wife’s suicide. IO Jugraj Singh said the suspect has been identified as Lakhvir Singh of Sagar Pur village. Jaswindar Kaur of Malu Wal village, had complained to the police that her sister Rajwindar Kaur’s marriage was solemnised with Lakhvir 15 years ago. She alleged that Lakhvir would harass her sister and threaten to kill her. The complainant said when she came to Sagar Pur village on February 24 at the request of Rajwindar, she found her hanging from a ceiling fan in her house. The complainant alleged that her sister had committed suicide because of harassment at the hands of her husband. The IO said a case under Section 306 of Indian Penal Code had been registered against Lakhvir. OC MAN MOWED DOWN BY VEHICLE Phagwara: The Nakodar Sadar police have booked the unidentified driver of a vehicle on the charge of causing death by negligence. Rajindar, a resident of Kang Sahibu village, complained to the police that an unidentified vehicle driver had hit his father Rajinder and killed him. IO Janak Raj said a case under Sections 304-A and 279 of the Indian Penal Code had been registered against the unidentified driver. OC 1,400 KG OF RAW LIQUOR DESTROYED Phagwara: The Bilga police destroyed 1,400 kg of lahan (raw liquor) found on the banks of the Sutlej. Investigating officer (IO) Sarup Singh said the police and excise team had found 1,400 kg of lahan stored in five drums and seven pits inside the river bandh near Bhode village. The entire quantity of the liquor was later destroyed. Announcing that several development works are being carried out in mandis across the state, the minister said with the completion of said works, markets would get a major facelift besides ensuring requisite amenities Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 26 Under the banner of the Computer Adhyapak Union, scores of computer teachers of government schools from across Punjab today held a protest march in the city against the AAP government, demanding fulfilment of their long-pending demands. Teachers also pasted pamphlets on the walls, and distributed it among people, criticising the promises made by the government regarding bringing them under the Punjab Government Service Rule. The teachers first gathered outside the District Administration Complex and then took out a protest march in the city holding a Ravan-like effigy of the government and distributed pamphlets among the residents. In the pamphlets, the teachers had written their 17-year-old demands, and how the successive governments have done nothing to date. Meanwhile, owing to the protest, AAP’s Jalandhar Central MLA Raman Arora was found stuck in the traffic jam near Jyoti Chowk. Man arrested for sacrilege in Rama Mandi Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 26 A day after an incident of desecration was reported at Nandanpur village in Maqsudan, another such incident came to light on Sunday morning when a passer-by noticed a man tearing off pages of the Gutka Sahib at a park in Beant Nagar, Rama Mandi. As per the information, Joga Singh, a man out on a morning walk, saw a man fish out some pages of the Gutka Sahib from a bag that ACCUSED APPEARS TO BE MENTALLY UNSTABLE: COPS he was carrying, and then ripping off the pages and dumping them across the park. When Joga tried to nab the man, he fled the spot. Joga then asked a scooter-borne woman — who was passing by the park — to chase the man down. Some other local residents gathered at the spot, and managed to catch the man, who was then tied to a pole and thrashed by the locals before being turned in to the police. Kulwant Singh Mannan, member of Shiromani Committee, Amritsar, who reached the spot, said the accused was in an inebriated state. He had stolen the Gutka Sahib from a gurdwara. He demanded, “The police should take strict action against such persons who are not only disturbing the law and order situation in the city, but also hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikh community.” The police initially registered a case in this regard under Section 295-A of the IPC but after Sikh leaders of the Sikh Talmel Committee intervened, the police also added Sections 120-B and 153-A of the IPC. ACP Central Nirmal Singh said the accused, Varinder Singh of Guru Nanak Pura, has been arrested. He said that based on a preliminary investigation, it seemed that the man is slightly mentally unstable, but that it could only be confirmed after he undergoes a medical examination. He has two elder brothers. — TNS c m y b Jalandhar, February 26 Another case of sacrilege was reported at a gurdwara in Jalandhar today. This is the second such incident in just two days. A man smoked and urinated on the gurdwara premises in Nandanpur on Saturday. The following day, a man ripped off the pages of copy of the Gutka Sahib lifted from a gurdwara, and scattered them across a park. As per the Jalandhar rural and city police, both the men are of unsound mind. The incident today marked the fourth such incident in Jalandhar in the past three months. In light of such incidents, the Jalandhar police have said that they would be holding meets with gurdwara committees to depute men on the gurdwara premises to stand guard at all times. On December 5, two persons were booked in connection with a sacrilege incident at a gurdwara at Mansoorpur village in Goraya. The duo had tried to break open the gurdwara “golak”, consumed liquor and used tobacco on the gurdwara premises. Another sacrilege incident was reported on January 10 in Jalandhar when a man at the Hamiri Khera Fatehpur village in Jalandhar mishandled shastars (weapons) kept inside the village gurdwara. On December 7 last year (two days after the Mansoorpur incident), the district administration had ordered theekri pehras (night watch) from 8 pm to 5 am to be observed at religious places across all tehsils, sub-tehsils, towns and villages falling in We ❝needare emphasising the for round-the-clock vigilance at gurdwaras to prevent such untoward incidents. WhatsApp groups were created for sarpanches and panchayats in this regard. Harpal Singh Chadha of the Sikh Talmel Committee said, “Such incidents are becoming very frequent. The question is: Why are all these men targeting gurdwaras? The Gurdwara Prabandhak Committees also need to be more proactive in protecting their premises. The police have lodged an FIR in connection with the recent cases. If this persists, we will take up the issue formally.” Harjinder Singh, the sarpanch of Dayalpur village in Jalandhar said, “None of the village panchayats is holding theekri pehras right now. But with such elements around, the prabandhak committees should at least depute men on day and night watch. Unruly elements can’t be allowed to saunter into gurdwaras.” SSP (Rural) Swarandeep Singh said, “The police cannot watch over all the gurdwaras all the time, so we are seeking out the active engagement of gurdwara committees.”
