SHO Bhushan Kumar said the accused had been identified as Manprit Kaur, Gurmit Kaur , Charanjit Singh and Gurpal Singh. The SHO said, “Phillaur Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Gur Mehtab Singh has ordered that the accused already declared proclaimed offenders in a case of snatching and assault should be booked for not appearing in the court. The District administration will ensure strict action against those found misusing their licensed weapons. TELLING FIGURES Jalandhar, March 17 Cracking down on the gun culture in the district, Deputy Commissioner Jaspreet Singh on Friday cancelled as many as 538 arms licences in the district. The Deputy Commissioner said as per the orders issued by the state government, the administration had conducted a review of weapon licences issued to individuals following which these licenses have been revoked with immediate effect. Of these 538 licences, 362 were suspended during renewal procedure on account of negative police reports, while the remaining 362 renewals cancelled due to negative police reports 25 licensees had left the country and settled abroad 176 ❝ cancelled for other reasons 50 cases where re-verification was negative ❞ licences cancelled 101 firearmdeath of licensees due to 176 cancelled for various reasons. A total of 101 firearms licences were cancelled due to death of license holders. He said rules have to be followed for keeping a gun and any kind of violation of these norms would attract strict action as per the law. The DC said since there is a statewide ban on carrying and displaying weapons in public functions, religious places, marriage ceremonies, or any other events, random checking will be done in different areas in the coming days. Minister Aman Arora recently said the government had cancelled more than 2,000 arms licence. “Rules have to be followed. Now there is a ban on carrying and displaying of weapons in public,” he had said. The lawyers should encourage litigants to look for alternative modes of justice such as mediation because in most of the civil cases, litigants are confused. If an advocate gives a judge a well-prepared case, the judge will have to decide it immediately.” On the piling up of cases in the courts, he said at some places the number of new cases coming to the courts was fewer than those disposed of, but at most places it was not so. There was an increase of 1,000 to 2,000 pending cases every year. At present in Hoshiarpur, 40,000 cases are pending. continued page 2 Phagwara cops launch probe after scriptures found in garbage Phagwara, March 17 A case of religious scriptures being found in a pile of garbage on the road at Katihra Chowk came to light here on Thursday evening, after which the leaders of religious organisations arrived and called the police to the spot. A shopkeeper Ashish said that he was sitting in his shop when a woman came and said that there were some religious books lying near his shop. He then called the police and some eminent citizens including Vipan Sharma, Rajesh Palata, Raju Chahal, Vinod Jalota, Babbu Chopra and others who rushed to the spot and called the police. The police have started investigations after scanning the footage from CCTV cameras installed in the area. SHO City Amandeep Nahar said the police are investigating the matter. — OC Woman arrested with illicit liquor Phagwara, March 17 The Mehatpur police arrested a woman for selling illicit liquor. IO Harwindar Singh said nine bottles of hooch were seized from the possession of the accused, identified as Rajni Bala, a resident of mohalla Shadi Khan.
