TNS TWO BOOKED FOR SNATCHING CASH Amritsar: Two unidentified armed persons robbed a man of his scooter and cash after attacking him with an iron rod and leaving him seriously injured on Wednesday night while he was on his way back home from work. Gurbaxrai, the victim, said that when he had reached near the 88-foot road graveyard, two scooterborne persons waylaid him. The duo snatched his scooter and a purse containing Rs 1,500. The police have registered a case under Section 379-B (2) and 34 of the IPC in this regard. TNS TWO NABBED WITH STOLEN VEHICLES Amritsar: The Kotwali police have arrested notorious snatcher Mohit of Godam Mohalla and his accomplice Arsh Gil of the Hathi Gate and recovered two stolen motorcycles from their possession. Kotwali police SHO Joga Singh said they were arrested from the Katra Jaimal Singh area with a bike which was later found to be a stolen one. Interrogation of the suspects led to the seizure of another bike. During the investigation, it was found that Mohit already had around 12 cases of snatching and theft registered against him. TNS PHONES SEIZED FROM INMATES Amritsar: The Amritsar Central Jail authorities recently seized three mobile phones from three prisoners during a recent search operation. TNS Incessant rain, high-velocity winds cause further damage to wheat crop Tribune Reporters Amritsar/Tarn Taran, Mar 24 Incessant rain since today morning would further cause damage to the crop in the areas of Amritsar and Tarn Taran. The wheat crop in the region had been flattenned by the heavy rain and high velocity winds on March 17. Since the last week, it is third heavy rain that will prove unfavourable for the crop. The wheat crop is at earring stage and with the flattening of the plant, the growth of grain gets disrupted. The rain accompanied by high-velocity winds lead to most of the damage. Most of the fields have been flattened in the region and farmers are worried about the yield. As per weather forecasting, more rain is expected during the next three days. Agricultural experts say the heads of flattened wheat plants would be damaged if dipped in the rainwater accumulated in the fields. The grain would lose its shine with more rain. Narinder Singh, a farmer of Daburji village said: “Earlier, it was hot in the month of February, which was unfavorable for the crop. Now the rain and high-velocity winds are damaging the wheat plants. Rabi crops damaged: Heavy rain accompanied by high-velocity winds lashed the district on Friday. The rain has added to the farmers’ worries as there are reports that in case rain continues to lash the district, it would lead to a heavy loss of not only the wheat crop but also of other crops. Rain started lashing the district in the morning. After a two-hour break in the afternoon, it started raining again and continued till late in the evening. The ADO said the wheat crop was in dough stage and if it got flattened at this time, these would not bounce back from damages caused to them. This year the extent of loss of crops seemed to be far more than that seen last year. The shop of a property tax defaulter being sealed in Amritsar. MC seals 8 shops, collects ~22 lakh tax Amritsar, March 24 The property tax wing of the Municipal Corporation (MC) sealed 17 commercial establishments of tax defaulters here on Friday. Meanwhile, of them, nine property owners paid their pending tax on the spot and MC officials opened the seals. The properties of the remaining eight defaulters are still sealed. The MC has been regularly sealing properties of tax defaulters for the last four days. Most of these shops are in interior areas of the city. Officials of the property tax wing claim that they have collected Rs 22 lakh and more than 500 property tax owners paid the tax today. Daljit Singh, Nodal Officer for property tax, said, “We are visiting the properties of tax defaulters regularly. Notices have been issued to all defaulters. Amritsar, March 24 The city police have decided to deal firmly with those responsible for behind encroachments on roads. “Traffic cops and Municipal Corporation authorities would launch a drive on Monday, urging the traders to not display their items on the road. If they do so, the goods would be shifted inside the shop. From the next time, if the shopkeeper is found indulging in the illegal practice, legal action would be initiated against him or her,” warned Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and order) Parminder Singh Bhandal during an interaction with the media here on Friday. Recently, more manpower was added to the traffic police and it currently stands above 500. The city commissionerate has been divided into three zones which would be headed by three police officials with the rank of Assistant Commissioners of Police. Officials of the property tax claim that it is Rs 6 crore more than the amount which they had collected till March 24. The MC officials are expecting that they will collect Rs 35 crore till the end of the fiscal. The MC had conducted a scrutiny of the tax paid by a prominent mall on the GT Road and asked them to pay Rs 27 crore pending towards them. The shopping mall authorities moved the court and got a stay on the matter. If the mall authorities pay the pending amount, the MC will easily achieve the target of Rs 50 crore. This year the number of tax payers has increased. Suri read out Nanak Singh’s acclaimed poem Khooni Vaisakhi, which he had translated in English five four years ago. Suri gave a moving performance of the 100-year-old classic ballad about the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, which was received by global audience, thanks to Suri’s book. Singer-songwriter Harpreet Singh joined Navdeep Suri in pre- senting the musical poetry. Eleven other teachers were seriously injured in the incident. District Education Officer (Secondary) Satnam Singh Bath and other officials of the department of the district have sent their condolences to the bereaved. The accident occurred when the tempo collided with a Punjab Roadways Bus near Ferozepur. The deceased teachers have been identified as Kanchan, Prince Kumar and Maninder Kaur. The tempo driver has been identified as Ashok Kumar. Those injured have been identified as Balwinder Singh (ETT), Balwinder Kumar Pintu, Sunil Kumar, Manpreet Kaur, Gurpreet Kaur, Jasbir Kaur, Sarabjit Singh, Balwinder Singh, Harwinder Kaur, Ritu Bala and Navneet Kaur.
