The arhtiyas stated that workers engaged by them were from far-off villages and they usually stayed back in continued on page 2 Amritsar, May 9 The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) nabbed an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), Harpal Singh, of the Amritsar Rural Police posted at the Chatiwind police station for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 here on Tuesday. Disclosing this here, a spokesperson for the Vigilance Bureau said the ASI had been arrested on the complaint of Wariam Singh, a resident of Udhonangal Charanjit Singh Teja Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 8 The Municipal Corporation has been collecting cow cess for the last five years, yet the use of funds is hardly visible. The MC has received around Rs 7.45 crore from the various departments of Punjab Government, that collects cow cess on the sale of various products including liquor, vehicles and electricity. The excise department gave Rs 4,31,67,928 while the transport and other depart- ments contributed Rs 3,13,90,847 to the MC till date. The Municipal Corporation has developed a gaushala at Chheharta and operates another gaushala at Naraingarh in the city. More than 500 cows are being looked after in these gaushalas. Social activists working for their welfare are not happy with the arrangements made by the MC for the stray cows. As per the official record, Rs 3,33,90,571 has been spent by the MC on gaushalas to date. Due to the outbreak of lumpy skin disease (LSD) last year, the number of stray cows on c m y b roads had increased as people abandoned their cattle. There is no scarcity of funds for the MC but they are not using it properly for the welfare of stray cows in the city. A large number of cows and bulls are continued on page2 Accountant murder case solved, 2 held Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 9 The city police on Tuesday claimed that they had cracked the murder case of the accountant who was shot dead by unidentified armed assailants in Ram Nagar Colony late on Sunday evening. The police have arrested two persons and recovered a bike and scooter used in the crime. The arrested accused have been identified as Sagar (22) alias Dholan, a resident of Gali Sialkotian Chowk, Islamabad, and Amardeep Singh alias Romi (19), a resident of Ram Nagar Colony in Amritsar. The police also named three other persons including Avtar Singh, a resident of Gali Faujian Wali, Tarn Taran, Rohit alias Babbo, a resident of Jaswant Mohalla, Tarn Taran, and Bahman for their involvement in the case. Manju Sodhi, wife of Sham Sunder Sodhi, a resident of Ram Nagar Colony in the Islamabad area stated in her complaint that her 37-yearold son Saurav Sodhi owned a bakery and worked as an accountant by setting up an office at home. On May 7 at VISHAL KUMAR village in Baba Bakala. Giving details, he added that the complainant had approached the VB and informed its officials that his relatives, travelling in a car, had met with an accident near Gurwali village and one of them had succumbed to his injuries in a Amritsar hospital. The complainant further alleged that ASI Harpal Singh was the investigating officer in the case and he had demanded Rs 5,000 as bribe to bring the damaged car to the police station. continued on page 2 Tribune News Service VISHAL KUMAR Amritsar, May 9 Even as the local administration claims to have streamlined the lifting of wheat stocks from the grain markets in the district, nearly 69 per cent of the procured wheat is still lying in the markets. Of the total 6.88 lakh metric tonnes of wheat procured so far, only 2.12 lakh MT has been shifted to the godowns. District officials stated that nearly 11,950 MT of wheat was lifted on Tuesday. At this rate, it would take a long time before all the stock is shifted to godowns. In view of the sensitivity of the case, a team was constituted under Dr Mehtab Singh, ADCP City-1 and Prabhjot Singh Virk, ADCP City-2 on the instructions of the Commissioner of Police. While investigating every aspect of the case, the police succeeded in arresting two of the accused in the case. The accused Sagar alias Dholan was arrested along with an Activa used in the incident. During questioning, he informed about one of his accomplice Amardeep Singh alias Romi. The police arrested Romi along with the motorcycle used at the time of the incident. During the interrogation of these two arrested accused, the police got information about three other accomplices, including Avtar Singh, Rohit alias Babbo and Bahman. The mobile phone of Saurav Sodhi was seized from the house of the arrested accused Amardeep Singh alias Romi. The arrested accused will be produced in the court and interrogated thoroughly after remand. Raids are being conducted by different teams to arrest three of his associates named in the case. The police claimed that the remaining accused will be arrested soon.
