He was identified as Ramandeep Singh, alias Romi, gangster of the Sultanwind road. The police have registered a case under Sections 353 and 186 of the IPC and Section 42 of the Prison Act against Romi. TNS MAN BOOKED FOR CREATING RUCKUS Amritsar: The Kotwali police have booked Tejbir Singh of Pandori Waraich village who along with some youth in Nihang attire created a ruckus outside the famous Kesar De Dhaba on Thursday. SubInspector Hans Raj said he got information that around six unknown persons in Nihang attire were harassing people and threatening a kiosk owner. They also slapped his customers. As police teams reached the spot, the accused fled away. A case has been registered. District Education Officer (Secondary) Satnam Singh Bath said five students, including two of government schools, found their names in the state merit list. The DEO said that a total of 13,391 students had appeared in the exam, of which 13,156 students cleared the exam in the district with a pass percentage of 97.25 per cent. The district secured the sixth place in the state. Amritsar secured the third place in the state with an overall result of 98.97%. A total of 27,324 students appeared in the exams, out of which 27, 042 passed. Naman Yashpal, a student of Atam Public School, Islamabad, bagged the top position in the district by scoring 642/650 marks with 98.77%. Nitika Kumari from New flower Senior Secondary School came second who scored 641/650 marks with 98.62%. The third position went to Pari, a student of Government Senior Secondary School, Kot Baba Deep Singh, who scored 639/650 marks with 98.31%. Amritsar, May 26 Owing to unfavourable weather conditions, four Delhi-bound flights were diverted to Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport at Amritsar on Thursday night. According to information, a total of 11 flights, which were supposed to land at Delhi airport, were diverted to various airports in the country. Due to western disturbance, the national capital witnessed high-velocity winds late at night, which could affect the landing of the planes. Airport officials stated that air traffic at the Indira Gandhi International Airport was affected due to strong winds and rain on Thursday night. As a result, nine domestic and two international flights had to be diverted. Of them, four flights were diverted to Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport. Three of the flights were domestic and one was international. The IndiGo flight from Bhubaneswar to Delhi, Vistara flight from Mumbai to Delhi, Air India flight from Saudi Arabia to Delhi and Vistara flight from Bengaluru to Delhi landed at Amritsar airport. — TNS Amritsar, May 26 Two days after the police booked a Delhi-based man for duping two families on the pretext of sending their wards to the US who later landed in Indonesian jail, another incident has been reported in which a fake travel agent defrauded a man of Rs 12 lakh for sending his son to Portugal. The victim, Gurcharan Singh (35), was stranded at Serbia for 15 days as the accused’s accomplices (donkers) took his passport, cash and tickets. He somehow landed in Portugal, but his family members are fearing for his life and well-being. The accused was identified as Pavitar Singh, alias Pavitarjit Singh, of Daburji area falling under the Mehta police station here. He was booked under Sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) of IPC and Section 13 of the Punjab Prevention of Human Smuggling Act 2012 though he was yet to be arrested. Dhaliwal said the victims — Gurmej Singh and Ajaypal Singh — were victims of cheating in human trafficking scams. In Indonesia, they were held hostage by an alleged Indian-origin agent who attempted to extort ransom. During a fight, both escaped the place and an agent died. The boys were caught at the airport and now the local court sentenced them to death. ASI dies of cardiac attack in Tarn Taran Tarn Taran, May 26 Balwinder Singh (52), an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Punjab Police, residing in Muradpur locality of Tarn Taran, died of cardiac attack on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. Kanwaljit Kaur, wife of the deceased, in her statement to the police (city), said her husband had come home after performing his duties in Amritsar. He went to bed after taking dinner. He felt pain in the chest at midnight and was being rushed to a private hospital but he died on the way. He is survived by wife, two sons and a daughter. The police registered a report under Section 174, CrPC. After the postmortem at the Civil Hospital, the body was handed over to the family. — OC
