Investigating officer Jagdev Singh said the suspect had been identified as Charanjit Singh, alias Chani, a resident of Patti Akal Pur Malsian village. As many as 40 litres of lahan (raw liquor), seven bottles of hooch and utensils for brewing were recovered from his possession. A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered. Investigating officer (IO) Buta Ram said that the suspect had been identified as Akbar Hussain, a resident of Rame Wal village. Mohann Singh, a resident of Janta Nagar village, complained to the police that the suspect stole his twowheeler parked at a gurdwara in the village on August 21. A case under Section 379 of the IPC was registered against the suspect. The stolen bike was recovered from him. OC TWO POS LAND IN POLICE NET Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have arrested two proclaimed offenders (POs) who were absconding for the past few months. Station House Officer Yadwinder Singh said the accused had been identified as Balwinder Singh, alias Raju, alias Baba, a resident of Mandar Kalan village in Moga, and Rishi, a resident of Fateh Garh Panjtoor in Moga. They were wanted in cases of drug peddling and robbery. TRIBUNE PHOTOS Our Correspondent Garhshankar, August 26 A tractor-trailer driver died after an overloaded speeding tipper allegedly rammed into his vehicle from behind. Sukhdev Singh, a resident of Bhangal, Nangal tehsil, Ropar district, was going to Garhshankar on his sandladen tractor. When he reached near Shahpur village, a tipper coming at a high speed hit the tractortrailer from behind. The tipper dragged the tractor-trailer for some distance. The youth fell from the tractor after around 50 meters and got crushed under the wheels of the tipper. The tipper driver still did not stop the vehicle. After a chase, people managed to stop him at Alachor (Nawanshahr). However, he fled the spot. After the accident, a large number of people and residents of Bhangal village blocked the road and raised slogans against the police and the government. The protesters sought compensation for the family members of the deceased and a case against the tipper owner and driver. Garhshankar DSP Daljit Singh Khakh, Garhshankar SHO Harprem Singh, Mahilpur SHO Baljinder Singh Malli and Chabbewal SHO Jasveer Singh Bhari reached the spot with police force and anti-riot squad. SP Major Singh told the protesters that a case had been registered against tipper owner Ashwani Kumar, a resident of Mehindwani, and tipper driver Pradeep Kumar, alias Deepa, a resident of Nattha Nangal. The tipper owner had also been arrested. Apart from this, the tipper owner would give a compensation of ~17 lakh to the family of the deceased. Following which, the protestors lifted the blockade. The police said the tipper owner would be produced in a court tomorrow. The tipper driver would also be arrested soon. Stray dogs keep residents in fear Ashok Kaura Phagwara, August 26 Several dog-bite cases have been reported from the city and its adjoining areas in the past few days. It has created panic among residents. An estimated 300 persons, including women and children, who have been bitten by dogs, are being treated at the Civil Hospital and private hospitals every month. A senior police official suffered injuries after being bitten by a dog in Onkar Nagar here recently. Confirming the number, Senior Medical Officer Dr Lehmber Ram said around 10 to 15 persons visit the Civil Hospital daily after being bitten by stray dogs in the Phagwara sub-division. The SMO said all anti-rabies injections were in stock, including the immunoglobulin injection, meant for instant relief. There were reportedly more than 4,000 stray dogs in the sub-division. Phagwara ADC-cumMunicipal Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal said he would personally look into the matter and steps would be taken to sterilise stray dogs. “It has been learnt that the Animal Husbandry Department is not cooperating. Veterinary doctors are not visiting the town despite repeated letters to the department for sterilisation of stray dogs,” MC officials said.?Residents live in a state of fear due to the increasing number of stray dogs that can be seen almost in all streets. Officials from the civil administration, Municipal Corporation and Health and Animal Husbandry departments have turned a blind eye towards the menace. Four arrested for kidnapping, attacking man, live-in partner Tribune News Service Jalandhar, August 26 The police have arrested four persons for attacking a man and kidnapping him along with his live-in partner at the former’s house in Shamshabad village, Nurmahal. The suspects have been identified as Satnam Ram, his son Dushant Mehra and other aides. They attacked the man with whom Satnam’s wife was in a live-in relationship. Nakodar DSP Sukhpal Singh said complainant Gurjit Singh, a resident of Shamshbad at Nurmahal, Jalandhar, who is admitted to the hospital, alleged that he, along with Paramjit Kaur, wife of Satnam Ram, a resident of Dhani Pind, Jalandhar, and his (Gurjit’s) mother Rashpal Kaur, were sleeping in a room. Some men entered their house and attacked them around 11.30 pm on August 21. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
