The case of retired banker Parminder Singh, who was duped by a travel agent couple, is a perfect example of this. The victim lodged a complaint against a travel agent couple, who also ran an IELTS centre in the posh Ranjit Avenue locality. After a probe by the ADCP , the police registered a first information report (FIR) under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC and Section 13 of the Punjab Travel Professionals Regulation Act, 2014. However, the police failed to take immediate action and arrest the fraudsters identified as Amoldeep Kaur Gill Parminder Singh, a retired banker, shows the FIR copy in Amritsar. and her husband Haramrit Singh. A few days later, they absconded after shutting down their centre. Parminder had alleged that the suspects had duped him of Rs 22 lakh for sending his son Gurpinder Singh to Canada on a student visa. The complainant said he had lost a major chunk of the amount he got after his retirement. His was not the only case. Three more cases of similar offences were registered against the same couple by the Ranjit Avenue police station. Abhi Verma of the Lahori Gate area was duped of Rs 10.18 lakh on the pretext of sending him to Canada while Sukhjit Singh of Dhariwal in Gurdaspur district and another complainant Hari Singh were defrauded by the couple of Rs 12.75 lakh and Rs 17 lakh, respectively, for sending their wards to Canada. Parminder alleged that the suspects had filed false and fabricated cases against him in the local court through their lawyers to harass him so that he could not pursue the police case filed against them. “I have been making rounds of the economic offences wing which was entrusted with further investigation and action after the registration of the FIR, but nothing has been done so far. Only investigation officers have changed couple of times,” Parminder alleged. He urged the police to arrest the couple and provide justice to victims like him. Vatsala Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said necessary instructions would be passed to officials concerned to speed up the probe and arrest the suspects. Ward No. 19 roads need immediate recarpeting WARD WATCH WARD NO 19 AMRITSAR Charanjit Singh Teja Tribune News Service Amritsar, September 3 The Ward No. 19, which comprises several localities of the Mustafabad area on Batala Road, is largely underdeveloped. A ganda nullah, which links with the Tung Dhab drain, crosses through the ward. This nullah has raised several issues. A large number of streets in the area are yet to be recarpeted. Most localities in the Mustafabad area are densely populated and deprived of basic amenities. However, area councillor A broken road in a street of Ward No. 19 in Amritsar. VISHAL KUMAR Gurjeet Kaur claimed that she had addressed several major issues of the localities in the area. “The residents of Sundar Nagar locality were complaining about the contaminated water supply for the last 20 years. The old pipes have been replaced and a new tubewell installed in the area. Now, clean water is being supplied through overground supply lines. Every locality in the ward has water supply and sewer line. Five tubewells have been installed in the ward to meet the potable water requirement,” said Gurjit Kaur. The Ward No. 19 comprises Sunder Nagar, Kotla Basti, Indra Colony, Subash Colony, Green Land Colony and several other localities of Mustafabad. The streets in several localities are in pathetic condition. The Green Land area streets were constructed by a private coloniser around 20 years ago. Now all these streets needed recarpeting. “No doubt, the sewer and water supply lines have been installed in the past years. But streets in the ward need recarpeting. The commuters have to bear a bumpy ride due to potholes on streets. The main approach road of Green Land Colony has not been recarpeted for a long time,” said Harbans Singh, a resident. “The proposal of draining waste water from ganda nullah into sewer line is yet to be implemented. The nullah, which is a natural floodwater drain, has got contaminated due to dumping of sewage and industrial waste. This issue should be addressed on priority,” said Balwainder Singh, another resident. c m y b Potholed road flooded by sewer water near Old Sabzi Mandi irks commuters Policeman dies in accidental fire from revolver Manmeet Singh Gill Amritsar, September 3 Mystery shrouds the death of a senior constable Raminderpal Singh (33), who died of gunshot injury, at his house located in the Chheharta area here last night. Though shopkeepers have placed large stones and fixed sticks tied with clothes to warn commuters about potholes, vehicles, especially three-wheelers often get stuck on the slip road. The helpless commuters unaware of deep potholes themselves find new passages. Some try to bypass the stretch by driving over garbage heaps in the Old Sabzi Mandi to reach their destinations. Others prefer footpath to cross over the inundated stretch. Mostly inconvenience is faced by those commuters An auto-rickshaw stranded on an inundated slip road in Amritsar. who do not visit the area frequently or are unaware about the condition of the road. “It is a deadly stretch for those people who are not from the city and travel on the road for the first time as they are unaware of its condition,” said Rajesh, a nearby fruit seller. He said that vehicles often got stuck in deep potholes on the road and had to be towed. While the local municipal corporation is indifferent towards the condition of the road, the residents say officials can at least fix a few warning signs for the information of the commuters. “The MC can at least put up warning boards for commuters if it’s difficult to find sewer manhole that is flooding the road,” said Joginder Singh, a resident. “Two-wheeler riders often meet with serious accidents on the inundated road as they are not able to gauge deep potholes,” he said.
