The suspect has been identified as Sandeep Singh, alias Bagga, a resident of Vehran village falling under the Mehat Pur police station. SHO Mohinder Pal said 5 kg of poppy husk was recovered from his possession. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the suspect. The police also impounded a motorcycle bearing registration number PB10GS7375 on which he was travelling with the contraband. OC Phagwara: The Mehat Pur police have booked four persons, including a woman, on the charge of assaulting another woman. Investigating officer (IO) Harwinder Singh said the suspects had been identified as Jassi, a resident of Raulli village, her two sons Shera and Gopi, and Manpreet, a resident of the same village. Parween, a resident of the same village, complained to the police that the suspects barged into her house and attacked, injured and threatened her on September 14. A case under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (committing a crime with common intention) of the IPC has been registered against the suspects. OC NAKODAR WOMAN GOES MISSING Phagwara: The Nakodar city police have registered a missing report in connection with the disappearance of a woman. Bhajan Ram, a resident of Mohalla Sher Pur, Nakodar, complained to the police that his daughter-inlaw Rajwinder Kaur, alias Priya (23), went out of the house on September 15, but did not return. Investigating officer Harbinder Singh said a missing report had been lodged. OC RLY UNDERPASS WORK BEGINS Phagwara: Keeping in view the difficulties being faced by residents of villages located on the other side of railway tracks, Union Minister of State Som Parkash kick-started the construction of an underpass on the Mauli railway crossing near Phagwara. Sant Mahinder Pal of Dera Sach Khand Pandwa was also present on the occasion. The minister said the villagers were facing inconvenience in reaching Phagwara due to the closed railway crossing on Ludhiana main rail section. The third person, who was riding the same motorcycle, suffered serious injuries in the accident. The deceased have been identified as Shivam Saini, a resident of Ghaian Mohalla, the youths were going to attend ‘jagrata’ somewhere on Phagwara Road late last night. When they reached near Attowal village on the Phagwara Road, their bike collided head-on with a car coming from the opposite direction. The trio suffered serious injuries in the mishap. Passersby took them to the hospital where Shivam and Gurpreet were declared dead on arrival by doctors. A visit to Mundi Shehrian village in flood-hit Lohian revealed the sorry state of affairs. People have been spending days and nights atop their houses, which are still inundated with floodwater. Prakash Kaur, a resident of the village, said she did not even have a gas cylinder at her home to cook anything. Sharing her ordeal, the woman said she was looking after her twoyear-old daughter. Arranging milk for her daughter had become a herculean task. “We are disheartened. Just have a look at the conditions we are living in,” she said. The family of four has water all around their house. “We are living in a constant fear that anything can happen at any ❝ We do not even have a gas cylinder at our home to cook anything. Man drowns in floodwater A resident of the flood-hit Dhakka Basti village died after drowning in floodwaters Thursday evening. The deceased has been identified as Harmesh Singh. He was living in Nahl Mandi after his house collapsed due to the deluge on July 10. There is a breach in the bundh at Dhakka Basti. As a result, the way to the village is inundated. “He was upset. He started collecting bricks from his broken house and was about to sit on the boat to return to Nahl Mandi. He slipped and fell into the water,” said Surjit Singh, a relative of the deceased. The police stopped the suspect, who was riding an Activa scooter bearing registration number PB-36D-0266, for checking. The police also impounded his scooter. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the suspect. In another case, the police arrested two vehicle thieves and recovered a stolen Activa scooter bearing registration number PB-78-0706 last night from them. SP Gurpreet Singh said the suspects, identified as Rohit and Sahil, residents of Rama Mandi, were arrested at a checkpoint near Bhularai Gate in Phagwara. They were riding the stolen scooter. The remaining councillors are Jalandhar youth washed away in Bhagsu waterfall Dharamsala/Jalandhar, September 17 A Jalandhar youth, identified as Pawan Kumar (32), drowned in the Bhagsu waterfall at Bhagsunag in Dharamsala today. Sources said Pawan Kumar and his four friends had gone to take bath in the waterfall. Suddenly, water flow in the waterfall increased. Pawan tried to get out of the waterfall to reach a safer place. He, however, lost his balance and was washed away in the water current. Pawan’s friend informed the police. His body was found 100 m away from the waterfall. A car rally to mark the Swachh Bharat campaign was to be organised at 9 am today by the Municipal Corporation from Shalimar Bagh to DC Chowk in Kapurthala. But the Mayor, Congress councillors and leaders protested against not being invited to the event. They surrounded the office of the Municipal Commissioner and created a ruckus outside, raising slogans against the administration and government. Congress district unit (Urban) president Deepak Salwan, who lead the protest, said: “Despite being in majority, we were ignored for the rally. The Municipal Commissioner said on camera that she had invited NGOs and political parties. However, it was only late on Saturday evening that the Congress Mayor was sent an invite and asked to intimate the councillors. Congress MLA Rana Gurjit Singh, being the first member of the House, was also not invited.” Salwan also alleged that water pumps installed during the tenure of the Congress had not started working yet and many other development works were being ignored. Due to this, people of the city were not getting a proper supply of drinking water. MC Commissioner Anupam Kler said: “This is just a political issue being raked up as no invitations were sent to anyone. Only one invite was sent - to the Mayor and councillors. These are routine issues decided on the spur of the moment. The decision for the rally was taken just a day ago. As far as development works are concerned, they are being carried out as per due process.” Leader booked for ‘illicit activities’ at spa centre, further probe on Jalandhar, September 17 The police have registered a case against Shiv Sena leader Rohit Joshi for his alleged involvement in illicit activities linked to a spa centre at Navi Baradari. ADCP-2 Aditya said the Division No. 7 SHO got a tipoff regarding illicit operations at the centre, Spa Villa. Acting c m y b swiftly, the police raided the establishment and arrested a woman who appeared to be the owner on paper. However, investigations unveiled a startling truth. The actual proprietor of the spa centre was identified as Rohit Joshi. Consequently, the police levied charges against him under the relevant sections of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act. “We are currently conducting extensive search operations at various locations to apprehend him,” he said. NON-PAYMENT OF ARREARS K’thala DC forms price fixation panel Ashok Kaura Phagwara, September 17 Taking serious action to solve the tangle arising out of nonpayment of arrears worth ~40.75 crore of farmers by Phagwara Sugar Mills, the administration has now taken the decision to sell the attached property of the sugar mill to pay the arrears of the farmers. Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner Captain Karnail Singh today formed a seven-member ‘price fixation committee’. Phagwara SDM Jai Inder Singh has been appointed its convenor. The DC himself will be the chairman of the committee, while Hoshiarpur MP and Union Minister Som Parkash, Phagwara MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal, Block Samiti Chairman and District Revenue Officer will be the official members of the committee. Two representatives of the farmers will also be invited to the meetings of the committee. Confirming this, SDM Jai Inder Singh said the committee would recommend market rates of the attached property after completing a detailed survey within 15 days.
