Here’s a look at how the villain, Ravan, has galvanised filmmakers Sheetal V Over a coffee! Deepika and Ranveer were ‘secretly engaged’ in 2015 The first episode of the eighth season of popular chat show Koffee with Karan will feature star-couple Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. During the course of the episode, it comes out that the two were secretly engaged as Ranveer goes on to say that he proposed to Deepika in 2015. The episode promo shows Ranveer and Deepika in a fun banter as they go on to poke fun at the game format this time and also the show host Karan Johar. He asks the two if they were secretly engaged, and Ranveer Singh has no qualms in admitting that, “In 2015, I proposed to her, iske pehle ki koi aur aa jaye mein jaake chappal rakh deta hoon (sic)”. When asked with whom she shares a good chemistry other than her beloved husband, Deepika Padukone says, “I think I have an amazing chemistry with Hrithik, which everyone is going to see”. Ranveer takes this as an opportunity to mimic Hrithik. Koffee with Karan Season 8 will be available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar, from October 26 with new episodes dropping every Thursday. — IANS IJAYADASHAMI, Dasehra, Dasara or Dashain… based on the epic Ramayana, this is a day that reaffirms our belief in the victory of ‘good over evil’. Many Bollywood movies have been based on the concept, but this Dasehra here is a look at various avatars of the eponymous villain, Ravan, adapted by filmmakers on to the screen. Modern twist Adipurush was one of the most-anticipated films of 2023, which the director claimed was inspired by the Ramayana. However, National Award-winning director Om Raut wasn’t able to do justice to the topic and fans were left a disappointed lot. All it did was provide enough fodder for meme-makers on social media! Even during the trailer launch, many reacted to Saif Ali Khan’s look as Ravan and the poor VFX of the film, which is available on Netflix, was taken to task. Other films that have borrowed themes from the Ramayana and given them a modern twist include recent Telugu releases, Ravanasura and Dasara. Though Dasara’s director Srikanth Odela named the main characters as Dharani (played by Nani), Vennela (Keerthy Suresh) and Chinna Nambi (Shine Tom Chacko), there is no denying that these are based on Ram, Sita and Ravan, respectively. Available on Netflix, the dubbed Hindi version of the film was also well-received by the audiences. On the other hand, 2023 release Ravanasura is a psychological action thriller by Sudheer Varma, adapted from Bengali film Vinci Da (2019). It stars Ravi Teja in the lead role and only the title, Ravanasura, has been stolen from the Ramayana. Ravi commits crime under 10 different guises just like Ravan had 10 faces! Prabhas fans create 230ft cutout on his birthday Raavan Ravanasura Adipurush Old is gold The first film on Ravan was titled Raavan (1984). Directed by Johnny Bakshi, it starred Smita Patil, Om Puri and Gulshan Arora. SRK-starrer sci-fi movie Ra.One’s main antagonist, Arjun Rampal, was modelled after Ravan. In 2010, director Mani Ratnam simultaneously released Raavan (Hindi) and Raavanan (Tamil). The Hindi film starred Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan. Actor Vikram played a cop, Dev Pratap, deployed in a Naxalite area whereas Bachchan played Beera, Ra.One Actor Prabhas, who is awaiting the release of his film Salaar: Part 1 — Ceasefire, celebrated his birthday on Monday. On the occasion, the actor’s fans created a colossal cutout of the actor’s poster from the film, in Kukatpally, Hyderabad. The massive cutout measures 230-ft in height. Salaar: Part 1 - Ceasefire marks the first-ever collaboration between Prabhas and the KGF director Prashanth Neel. The film also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan, and Jagapathi Babu. Earlier, Prabhas received a very unique and special birthday gift from X (formerly Twitter), as they introduced a special emoji modelled after his character from Salaar: Part One Ceasefire. Produced by Hombale Films, the film is set to hit the theatres on December 22, where it will clash with the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Dunki. The film marks the first collaboration between SRK and Rajkumar Hirani of 3 Idiots fame. The film also stars Taapsee Pannu. — IANS Dasara nicknamed as Ravan. As the film progresses, it actually questions whether the true demon lies in Beera or Dev. Also, Beera kidnaps Ragini (Aishwarya), who is Dev’s wife, which is again inspired from the Ramayana. In the Tamil film, Raavanan, Vikram played the character of Veera (Ravan-inspired) whereas actor Prithviraj essayed Dev. In both the films, Aishwarya played the role of Ragini. In the making There has been quite a buzz about upcoming film Sita: The Incarnation. Directed by Alaukik Desai, the screenplay is by Baahubali creator, KV Vijayendra Prasad, father of SS Rajamouli. Kangana Ranaut will play the lead role. The movie is based on the life of Sita before her marriage to Lord Ram. Waiting to see who would play Ravan in this one! Telugu debut for Elnaaz With a pious heart Elnaaz Norouzi is gearing up for an exciting new project, Devil — The British Secret Agent, which marks her debut in the Telugu film industry. The poster of the film has been released and in it Elnaaz can be seen in a glittery outfit, which showcases her impeccable style. Elnaaz took to social media and wrote “And here is Rosy in the Devil.” The film has been directed by Naveen Medaram and produced by Abhishek Nama. Ashtami celebrations at one of Mumbai’s oldest pujos, the North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja Samiti, turned out to be a treat for Rani Mukerji’s fans. Several videos have been doing the rounds on the internet in which Rani is seen gracefully performing the traditional Dhunuchi dance in front of the idol of Goddess Durga. One can also spot choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant and Kajol’s sister Tanishaa Mukerji performing the traditional prayer dance. Rani looked exquisite in a muted gold saree. Several Bollywood celebrities have been attending the festivities at North Bombay Durga Puja since a few days. Kajol marked her presence along with her son. Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan also attended Ashtami celebrations at Durga puja pandal. This one (Reese) was sitting next to me. I was going through a very public, very hard moment in my life. She was right there and the way I needed to get through it was dance cardio,” Jennifer, who was on the panel with Reese and Mindy Kaling, shared at Hello Sunshine’s Inaugural Shine On event in Los Angeles. The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
