The suspect has been identified as Harpreet Singh, alias Happy, a resident of Bau Pur village. Investigating officer (IO) Sulindar Singh said 305 intoxicant tablets were recovered from his possession. The IO said a case under Sections 22(B), 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the suspects. OC MAN BOOKED IN DOWRY CASE Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have booked Balwindar Singh, a resident of Gatti Rahime Ki village in Ferozepur, in a dowry harassment case. Santosh Kaur, a resident of Mundi Chohlian village, had filed a complaint with the Senior Superintendent of Police, Jalandhar (Rural), stating that her marriage was solemnised with Balwindar Singh, who is serving in the Punjab Police, in 2020. In her complaint, she said her husband and his family started harassing her, demanding more dowry three days after the marriage. Investigating officer (IO) Avtar Singh said a case under Sections 406 and 498-A had been registered against the suspects. No arrest has been made. OC TWO ARRESTED FOR BIKE THEFT Phagwara: The Nakodar city police arrested two persons on the charge of stealing a motorcycle. Investigating officer (IO) Hans Raj said the suspects had been identified as Balwindar Singh, alias Sonu, a resident of Sharak Pur village, and Jaspret Singh, alias Jassi, a resident of Sarinh village. The IO said the suspects were intercepted at a naka and a stolen motorcycle was recovered from their possession. A case under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC has been registered against the suspects. A day after people resorted to panic buying amid truckers’ strike, fuel supplies were replenished with fresh stocks. No queue was seen at any petrol pump today. Phagwara SDM Jashanjit Singh said Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner Capt Karnail Singh yester- day warned that any kind of hoarding by petrol pumps would not be tolerated. The Deputy Commissioner had also appealed to public not to resort to panic buying of fuel, assuring them of the availability of adequate stocks. Jalandhar, January 3 The president of the Punjab Truck Union, Happy Sandhu, found himself in the spotlight today as he was detained by the city police during a protest in the morning against the new ‘hit-andrun’ laws. The incident took place near Rama Mandi on the Jalandhar-Hoshiarpur Road, where Sandhu along with members of his union and other truckers had gathered to hold a dharna. Earlier in the day, Sandhu took to social media, urging truck operators to join the protest against the controversial law. In a live video, he claimed that the law had not been revoked, emphasising the need to continue the strike. Sandhu alleged that the police had conducted a raid at his residence in the morning with intentions to arrest him, and vowed to continue the fight, even if he ended up behind bars. Surprisingly, after Sandhu’s detention at the protest site, the police took a sudden turn in the case. In the afternoon, he was released as his supporters gathered near the Police Lines. The police later issued a statement revealing that CP Swapan Sharma held a meeting with truck union representatives and senior officials from the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL). Three land in Nawanshahr police dragnet with 18 grams of heroin Tribune News Service Nawanshahr, January 3 The police arrested three persons with 18 grams of heroin here today. Two cases were reported from Pojewal, while one from Sadar Balachaur. The police said a naka was laid near the Saroa Tpoint. They saw a man approaching toward the naka, holding a polythene bag. “On seeing the police, he threw the polythene bag. During checking, the police recovered five grams of heroin from his possession,” an official said. The suspect, identified as Sandeep Pal (35), is from Sadar Banga. A case under Section 21 of the NDPS Act has been registered against him. In another case, the police arrested a person near Singhpur village and recovered six grams of heroin from his possession. The suspect has been identified as Jatinder Singh (33) from Sadar Banga. The police saw a person coming on bike from the Kahnpur Khuhi area. “He tried to escape after seeing the police. On suspicion, we nabbed him. During checking, six grams of heroin was recovered from him. A case under Section 21 of the NDPS Act has been registered,” said the police. In yet another case, the police arrested a youth with six grams of heroin from Sadar Balachaur. The suspect has been identi- fied as Gagandeep Singh (23) from Hoshiarpur. The police said: “The suspect was nabbed near the Majari toll plaza. We signalled him to stop for checking at a naka. On seeing the cops, he started running in the opposite direction. A woman was nabbed with 10-kg poppy husk from Sadar Banga here yesterday. Apart from this, two drug peddlers were arrested with 22 grams of heroin from Aur area.
