Tribune News Service Phagwara: A man died on the spot after a speeding vehicle hit him near Khangurra village on the national highway here on Thursday night. The deceased has been identified as Joga Singh of Jagpalpur village near here. The driver of the unidentified vehicle managed to flee after the mishap. Pardeep Singh, son of the deceased, told the police the accident took place while his father was returning home on his cycle after work. The police have registered a case. OC GIRL MISSING SINCE NOV 14 Phagwara: On a complaint lodged by Mohammad Sazid, a resident of Bhularai village, the police have registered a case under Section 346 of the IPC against an unidentified person on the charge of abducting the complainant’s daughter on the pretext of marrying her. The girl was reportedly missing since November 14. A missing report in this regard was lodged on November 16, said the victim father. The police are investigating the matter and searching for the missing girl. OC EIGHT BOOKED ON FRAUD CHARGE Phagwara: On a complaint lodged by a Talbir Singh, a resident of Nasirabad village near here, the police have booked eight persons on the charge of duping the complainant of ~4 lakh. The suspects have been identified as MD Ldris of Kolkata, Sidra Bano of Mumbai, MD Tarek of Kolkata, Aniket Dass of Kolkata, Tabasum Parveen of Uttar Pradesh, Sabita Dass of Kala Bangan, Hafiz of Muzaffarnagar and Firdosh of Kolkata. The police have registered a case against the suspects under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC. OC LIQUOR TRADER IN POLICE NET Phagwara: The police have arrested a liquor trader and recovered 3 boxes of whisky from his possession on Thursday night. The suspect, identified as Paramjit Singh, a resident of Moti Bazar, Phagwara, was nabbed at a checkpoint, the police said. A case under the Excise Act has been registered against the suspect. OC WOMAN HELD WITH HEROIN Phagwara: The Mehat Pur police have arrested a woman drug peddler on the charge of selling heroin. The suspect has been identified as Sukhwinder Kaur, a resident of Gounsu Wal village. Investigating officer (IO) Balwinder Singh said four grams of heroin was recovered from her possession. The IO said a case under Sections 21-A, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the suspect. OC Jalandhar, January 12 Coming as a major embarrassment for the state government, Municipal Corporation authorities and Jalandhar Smart City teams, the city slipped 85 notches in the Swachh Survekshan 2023, the rankings of which were declared yesterday. Despite the fact that Punjab Local Bodies Minister Balkar Singh hails from Jalandhar city, it slipped from 154th rank last year to 239th in the country, which is the lowest in the past four years. The city stands at 13th position in Punjab, instead of sixth last year. Jalandhar lags terribly behind in terms of garbage collection. In fact, the city got zero per cent in the criterion for waste generation and processing since there is no working processing unit in Jalandhar despite tenders being floated year after year. The city got 3,848 marks out of a total of 9,500. It lost all 1,830 points on which the waste processing is weighed. The city generates 500 tonnes of waste daily and its ~35crore bio-mining project has been a big failure. The vehicle dragged him for a considerable distance, before crashing into a divider on the highway. The cop, identified as ASI Surjit Singh, fell on the divider and suffered serious injured. The car driver fled the spot after the incident. While the police have traced the car, the suspect is yet to be nabbed. The car has the registration number of Moga. A CCTV footage of the incident was released today. In the footage, the driver can be seen ramming his vehicle into the cop. The driver dragged him for some distance before crashing into a divider. When the cop signalled the vehicle to stop for checking, the driver rammed the vehicle into him. After the ASI fell off the vehicle, the car driver rammed the vehicle into a railing on the highway. The Police Commissioner said vendors in the markets lead to traffic congestion. To tackle this problem, the Police Commissioner and the Municipal Corporation, led by Commissioner Aditya Uppal, divided the city into four zones. As many as 15 sites with a huge chunk of land had been identified for vendors. Sharma said a sustainable solution was required to end the traffic problem in the city. The CP said 15 points had been established within four designated zones in the city, providing vendors with a new space to operate from. Vendors would be provided all essential amenities in the vending zones such as water and electricity, adding that emergency response support (ERS) would Cash stolen from golak at gurdwara Suspect also takes away gas cylinder, act caught on camera Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 12 A thief struck at a gurdwara on the Phillaur-Nurmahal road on the intervening night of January 11 and 12 here and decamped with money from the golak and a gas cylinder. The suspect entered the gurdwara by making a hole in its rear wall around midnight. In the CCTV footage, which went viral on social media, the suspect can be seen stealing money from the golak and walking away with a cylinder. The gurdwara authorities said when granthi reached the gurdwara in the morning, he saw the premises ransacked. He found the money from golak and a gas cylinder missing. The authorities said the suspect also fiddled with the place of worship and saroops of the ‘Gutka Sahib’ were found scattered on the premises. After getting information, the police reached the spot and initiated an inves- tigation into the matter. Phillaur SHO Neeraj Kumar said: “The suspect entered the gurdwara by making a hole in its rear wall. He stole money from the goal and a gas cylinder. Since the suspect was wearing a mask, we are trying to identify him. We are scrutinising footage of CCTV cameras to get clue about him.” The police registered a case against the suspect under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC. c m y b Jalandhar, January 12 The Jalandhar Police Commissionerate, led by Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma, today busted a gang involved in the smuggling of heroin with the arrest of a person. The police also recovered one kg of heroin from him. The CP said the police got a tip-off that a gang was involved in smuggling of drugs. Swinging into action, the police increased the vigil to nab the suspects. A special cell constituted by him even arrested a key member of the gang. The CP said during a special checking on the Bashirpura T-point, the police saw a car coming from Guru Nanakpura. They signalled the car driver to stop the vehicle for checking. During checking, the police recovered one kg of heroin and arrested the suspect, identified as Prabhjot Singh (33), a resident of Thathi village falling under the Lopoke police station in Amritsar district. The CP said a case under Sections 21-C, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act had been registered against the suspect at the Navi Baradari police station. Further investigations were on in the case. The Police Commissioner Continued on page 2 Jalandhar, January 12 “Sarkar Tuhade Dwaar”, an ambitious programme of the Punjab Government, has evoked good response from residents. As many as 241 persons got various government services on their doorsteps by dialing 1076 helpline. A total of 358 appointments were booked since the launch of 1076 helpline on December 10, 2023. Of this, services were delivered to nearly 67 per cent of the residents. The services of the remaining applicants are under process and will be delivered within the given time frame. Presiding over a meeting with officials and the Sewa Kendra management, the DC asked them to further strengthen the mechanism of booking appointments and delivering the services. He said though the figures were admirable, it needed to be taken to 100 per cent. More staff was being recruited for the effective functioning of the helpline. The DC said residents could avail of the service by dialing ‘1076’ and schedule an appointment as per their convenience. They would be informed about the documents, fee, etc., for the services they want to avail. Residents would get an SMS with the list of documents required and day/ time of appointment. He said specially trained personnel “Seva Sahayak” would visit them on the fixed day/time and complete the necessary paperwork. Seva Sahayaks will collect the fee and give an acknowledgment receipt with which residents can track their application. 5 cars reduced to ashes Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 12 Five cars, including a BMW, three Audis and an Indica, caught fire at a car bazaar on the JalandharAmritsar National Highway here this morning. The incident took place around 7 am when 20 cars were parked at Trehan Car Bazaar. Other cars were shifted to a safer place. The dealer has reportedly suffered a loss of over ~50 lakh in the incident. Eyewitnesses said an Audi car caught fire, which spread to four other cars within a few minutes. Commuters and passersby informed the owner of the car bazaar and the fire brigade about the incident. They also tried to douse the flames by splashing water on the vehicles, but to no avail. The Fire Department took nearly two hours to douse the flames. Teams from the Division No. 1 police station also reached the spot. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
