The complainant, Shruti, a resident of Mohalla Lakhan Pal, Nurmahal, complained to the police that her husband and his parents had been demanding dowry ever since her marriage. Investigating officer (IO) Kashmir Singh said Lovpreet Singh, a resident of Tawandi Chaudarian village in Kapurthala, complained to the police that his maternal uncle Manga Ram, a resident of Farid Sarai village falling under the Sultanpur Lodhi police station was returning home from Lohian Khas on January 13. A speeding car bearing registration number DL10CD5153 hit his motorcycle near the railway station. He died in the mishap while his relative suffered serious injuries. A case under Sections 279, 304-A, 337, 338 and 427 of the IPC has been registered. OC MAN BOOKED ON ASSAULT CHARGE Phagwara: The Bilga police have booked a man on the charge of assaulting a covillager. Investigating officer (IO) Kulwinder Singh said the suspect had been identified as Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Pati Shagne Wal, Bilga village. Bhalwinder Singh, a resident of the same village, complained to the police that the suspect attacked him with a sharp weapon on November 29 at Mao Sahib village. Flitting between moderate to satisfactory levels for the past 13 days of January, the district registered a dramatic increase in the AQI a day after Lohri celebrations. It registered its worst AQI today this month so far. A maximum AQI of 347 and average AQI of 153 was registered in Jalandhar a day after the Lohri celebrations. In the month of January DRAMATIC INCREASE Flitting between moderate to satisfactory levels for the past 13 days of January, the district registered a dramatic increase in the AQI a day after Lohri celebrations. It registered its worst AQI on Sunday this month so far. A maximum AQI of 347 and average AQI of 153 was registered in Jalandhar a day after the Lohri celebrations. so far, Jalandhar district crossed the 300 AQI mark only twice, that too briefly. However, on January 14, citizens woke up to very poor air quality due to fumes generated the previous night. The Sunday AQI was also in stark contrast to the previous day’s (January 13) maximum of 149 and average for the day was 100. The only occasions when AQI crossed the 300 mark in January, that too briefly, was on January 12 (maximum 320 and average 108), January 11 (maximum 305 and average 160) and January 6 (maximum AQI 304 and average AQI 146). On the remaining days in January, the AQI mostly remained within moderate to satisfactory levels with the average not crossing even double digits on several days. The average AQI on following days remained below 100 – January 1 (average AQI 93), Jan 2 (average AQI 100), Jan 4 (AQI 93), Jan 5 (AQI 96), Jan 7 (AQI 76), Jan 8 (AQI 82) and Jan 10 (AQI 94). Jalandhar, January 14 In view of the upcoming Republic Day celebrations, the Jalandhar Police Commissionerate, led by Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma, is holding flag marches along with the Rapid Action Force in sensitive areas of the city. CP Sharma said they had made elaborate security arrangements in the city. Police officials had been deployed to keep a strict vigil in wake of the Republic Day celebrations. He said security had also been enhanced in the city to check any sort of antisocial activity. Besides, round-the-clock vigil was being kept in the city for which various patrolling parties of police officials have been set up. He said senior officers had been instructed to conduct night domination in the city to keep an eye on law and order situation. Swapan Sharma said the Police Commissionerate and the 194 Battalion of the Rapid Action Force Cops and Rapid Action Force personnel hold a flag march in Jalandhar. Investigating officer (IO) Avtar Singh said the suspects had been identified as Joginder, alias Jindu, Lakhwinder Singh, a resident of Mianni village, his wife Amarjit Kaur, alias Ambi, and brother Mohinder Singh. Veer Kaur, a resident of Sherpur Taba village falling under the Dharamkot police station in Moga, told the police that the suspects waylaid her and her son on April 26, 2023, assaulted them and tore her clothes. The IO said daily diary report was registered on April 28. The SHO now visited the crime spot and ordered the registration of a case under Sections 354, 354-B, 323, 341 and 34 of the IPC against the suspects. Religious procession 50 KG LAHAN SEIZED, 1 BOOKED Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have booked a person on the charge of brewing illicit country-made liquor. Investigating officer Avtar Singh said the suspect had been identified as Satnam, alias Satta, a resident of Ismailpur village. Around 50 kg of lahan (raw liquor) was recovered from his possession. The suspect managed to flee from the spot. A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act has been registered. The SDM informed the staff that a special camp will now again be held on January 15 to complete pending cases of mutation. The incident took place around 2:30 am. It led to a panic in the area due to the potential risk of fire. The tanker was en route from Nakodar chowk to Guru Nanak Mission chowk. According to SHO Hardev Singh of the Police Division Number 4, the tanker driver tried to avoid a collision with a bike. As a result, the tanker lost balance and overturned. The event took place at Guru Nanak Mission Netarheen Ashram at Sapror village here today. Woollen items such as sweaters, socks and gloves were distributed among over 50 underprivileged kids. Apart from distributing clothes, members of the NGO also engaged in Lohri celebrations with the children. The festivities included singing songs and distributing peanuts, revdis and refreshments. Prof Kanwar Sartaj Singh, president of the NGO, emphasised the moral duty to uplift every section of society. — TNS regard for which a preliminary meeting was held recently in which Deputy Commandant Sonelal Sahu met DCP (Law and Order) Ankur Gupta and other officers to discuss these matters in detail. Delhi man dies in road accident Our Correspondent Phagwara, January 14 A Delhi resident died on the spot after a speeding tractor-trailer hit him near Saprod village on Saturday evening. The deceased has been identified as Ram Krishan. A speeding tractor-trailer hit him while he was crossing the road after parking his trolley on the roadside to ease himself. The driver of the speeding vehicle managed to flee after the mishap. The police have registered a case against the unidentified tractor-trailer driver under Section 304-A of the Indian Penal Code. The police handed over the body to the family members after a postmortem examination conducted at the Civil Hospital, Phagwara, on Sunday. DC felicitates 4 badminton players for bringing laurels NATIONAL SPORTS EVENTS Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 14 Deputy Commissioner Vishesh Sarangal felicitated four badminton players for winning medals in various national events and bringing laurels to the district recently. A cheque for ~31,000 was given to Manya Ralhan, while other players - Samridhi, Liza Tank and Abhinav Thakur - got cheques for ~21,000 each. The players, who belong to Jalandhar, won medals in National Games in Goa, National Badminton Championship in Guwahati and National School Games in 2023. “Manya won a gold medal in the girls’ doubles in the All-India Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament held at Hyderabad from January 3 to 9. She is the first girl from Jalandhar to have achieved that feat in the U-19 category,” said Ritin Khanna, Secretary, District Badminton Association. Congratulating the players for their achievements, the DC, who is also the president of the District Badminton Association (DBA), said these players had made the state in general and district in particular proud by bagging medals in the national sports events. He said the DBA would set up a corpus fund for providing financial support to players whenever they have to go outside the district and the state for participating in any competition or championship. Sarangal also motivated the players to continue to work hard to further excel in the game and assured all help in terms of better training facilities to them. Prominent among those present on the occasion included DBA’s interim committee chairman SDM Dr Jai Inder Singh, District Badminton Association secretary Ritin Khanna and treasurer Palwinder Singh.
