Despite regular complaints to officials concerned of the municipal corporation (MC), the issue remains unresolved. Irked residents had written to the water and sewerage wing of the MC to provide them clean drinking water on January 11. The application was marked to the staff concerned, but no one from the MC visited the area to address the issue. Pawan Kumar, a resident of street No. 5C, Gopal Nagar, said the problem of contaminated water supply started around four months ago. They were identified as Jahangir Sheikh of Fateh Singh Colony, and Sumit, alias Chuha, of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Colony. Dr Mehtab Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), said the duo was arrested by the police in a theft case. They were on three-day police remand for further investigation. Yesterday morning, the suspects managed to slip away from the police lock up. Immediately, police teams conducted raids at various places of their possible hideouts and arrested them, the ADCP said. A case under Sections 223 and 224 of the IPC was registered in this connection against the suspects. — TNS Amritsar, January 15 With the arrest of three persons, the city police claims to have cracked the SBI Customer Service Centre robbery case reported on January 6. The police recovered a country-made pistol, two bullets and a sharp weapon from the possession of the suspects. Those arrested were identified as Jobanpreet Singh of Jons village in Ajnala, Gurdas Singh of Guru Ki Wadali and Dharminder Singh, aka Kankata, of New Preet Nagar. Prabhjot Singh Virk, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), said three unidentified robbers looted an SBI Customer Service Centre located on the Batala road in broad daylight on January 6. Seized drugs destroyed at mill Woman killed, husband, Youth dies at Sanjay Gandhi Colony, Amritsar, January 15 The drug disposal committee of the city and Amritsar (Rural) police today destroyed narcotics seized from drug peddlers during the past several months. Drug disposal team led by Police Commissioner (CP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar today destroyed drugs through the incineration method at the Khanna Paper mill here. The narcotics, including heroin, intoxicants and powder, were confiscated in 47 criminal cases in the past, said Bhullar. The city police destroyed 7 kg of heroin, over 8.39 lakh intoxicant tablets and capsules, over 45,000 sedative injections, 1.2 kg of narcotic powder, 2.98 kg of charas and half kg of ganja. Car snatched, restaurant owner’s wife kidnapped Amritsar, January 15 An unidentified person allegedly kidnapped a woman, wife of a restaurant owner, and snatched his car near the Golden Temple area here on Sunday night.The kidnapper demanded money from the victim and later dropped her near Taran Wala Pul on the main GT road before escaping towards the Tarn Taran side. The police have launched a hunt to nab the unknown suspect. Gurinderbir Singh, ACP , East, said Anish Dhawan, owner of a restaurant, told the police that last night, he along with his wife were returning home from their restaurant around 11.30 pm. They had barely gone 50 meters when Anish found that he had forgotten his mobile phone at the restaurant. Anish said he left his wife in the car and went to restaurant on foot for the mobile phone. Anish said when he returned, he found his car missing. He said an auto-rickshaw driver told him that a man had driven away in his car. Anish immediately informed the police about it. ASI Gurmeet Singh of the Sadar police station said the deceased was identified as Baljinder Kaur (35). The injured were identified as Dharminder Singh (37), a resident of Dilawalpur village, falling under the Goindwal Sahib police station, Samarveer Singh (7) and Dilreet Kaur (5). The ASI said the victim family was on way back home in their Swift car bearing registration No. PB-38D-6954. When they reached at the Bath crossing, one car bearing registration No. HR-26 AH 4112 coming from the opposite side jumped over the highway divider and hit their vehicle. The victims were taken to a local private hospital where doctors declared Baljinder Kaur brought dead. The other injured were under treatment at the hospital and their condition was stated to be stable. The ASI said on the statement of Dharminder Singh, Gurarshdeep Singh of Kirtowal and Nirmal Singh of Booh Havelian were nominated as the suspects who caused the accident. A case was registered against them. Dharminder alleged that the suspects were under the influence of liquor. The suspects managed to escape from the spot leaving behind their Verna car. — OC Tribune News Service Amritsar, January 15 A youth died under mysterious circumstances at Sanjay Gandhi Colony in the Navi Abadi area on the Fatehgarh Churian road here yesterday. The police have arrested one person and launched an investigation into the matter. Vikas (27) had returned home after celebrating Lohri at his friend’s house. He went to sleep in the night and the next morning, he was found dead. His body bore injury marks. Following statement by Kanta, the mother of deceased, the police booked five persons on the charge of culpable homicide. One of the suspects, identified as Shubham, alias Bobby, was arrested while the remaining were absconding. Among others, who were booked, were identified as Ravi, Lalla Dipu wala, Husan and Ankush, all residents of Sanjay Gandhi Colony. Kanta stated to the police that this was first Lohri of Shubham after marriage. She said he along with his friends and relatives was celebrating Lohri at the rooftop of his house where other suspects Ravi, Lalla Dipu wala and his two sons Ankush and Husan were also present. She said her son Vikas also went there and they flied kites and consumed liquor together. She said as Vikas had con- sumed a lot of liquor, Shubham and others dropped him at her house in the evening. She said in the morning, they found Vikas dead. His body bore injury marks. She said initially the police initiated inquest proceedings in the case. Kanta said later, she came to know that Vikas was beaten up by the suspects. Varinder Singh Khosa, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), North, said following Kanta’s statement, the police registered a culpable homicide case against five persons. Residents are eagerly waiting for the weather to clear. On Monday, residents woke up to dense fog. They failed to get any respite from the extreme cold as the sun was not visible even today. With a minimum temperature hovering around 3°C for the past many days, the region is witnessing intense cold conditions. The maximum temperature too has remained below 16°C. The weather forecasts have predicted more foggy days during the ongoing week which makes it obvious that the respite from cold is quite far. “It’s been the longest spell of cold for the past many Amritsar, January 15 Wastage of water and depleting water table are a serious concern. Every day, thousands of litres of water flows into sewerage from overflowing overhead tanks of public and private buildings on the Lawrence road in the city. These overhead tanks don’t have an apparatus that uses a balloon to stop the flow of water. The cost of this device is only Rs 60. People use electric pumps to fill overhead water tanks during summers as the supply pressure is low. In winters, the situation is opposite as the usage of water decreases and overhead tanks can be seen overflowing in many areas. Earlier, a huge crowd of vendors used to visit the Vallah market on the city outskirts to buy fresh vegetables which they later sold on their stalls. “In summers, the vegetable market is full of customers by 5 am. Now, people come to market only after 6 am. Getting up early in the morning and going to the vegetable market is a difficult job,” said Malkeet, a vendor.
