The replica was auctioned online. Ludhiana, January 22 Saffron flags, blooming flowers, sparkling lamps and holy chants turned the city into ‘mini Ayodhya’ as devotees thronged city temples to welcome Ram Lalla on Monday. Screens were installed to display the live telecast of Ram Temple “pran pratishtha” ceremony at various places in the city and people from all walks of life gathered to celebrate the occasion. At Dandi Swami Temple, a massive gathering witnessed to watch the live telecast of the event. The organisers had organised “maha aarti” in which hundreds of devotees took part and the entire atmosphere echoed with Ram Dhun, Hanuman Chalisa. Congress MP Ranveet Singh Bittu sat with the devotees at the temple. Sanjiv Dhanda, from temple trust, said “Lord Rama belongs to all. Devotees are here to seek the blessings of Lord Rama.” Prasad of kheer, puris, samosa, laddoos was distributed among devotees. “It literally looks like Ram Rajya, where all are so happy,” said Geeta, a devotee. Crackers were burst to express happiness over “arrival of Lord Rama” Southern bypass ROB recarpeting faces delay Harshraj Singh Tribune News Service Ludhiana, January 22 After the removal of the mastic asphalt road layer on the Southern Bypass Railway overbridge (ROB) near BRS Nagar and a subsequent delay in repaving the road stretch, commuters are experiencing considerable inconveniences due to uneven surfaces. Several scooter and motorcycle riders are expressing concerns about the slippery nature of the road, especially after it was scraped around two weeks ago. Notably, the Public Works Department (PWD) had earlier launched a project to resurface the Southern Bypass Road, connecting Doraha to the Ferozepur Road junction in Ludhiana. While work has commenced near Doraha, it is yet to be carried out in the city’s jurisidiction. The road milling is part of the same project. Expressing her concerns, a female scooter rider said that the ROB stretch near BRS and other portions of Southern Bypass have become slippery since these were scraped, posing a high risk of accidents. She emphasised the responsibility of the concerned department to promptly recarpet the scraped stretches for commuters’ safety. A motorcyclist, Gagandeep Singh, shared similar concerns about the scrapped portions of the Southern Bypass ROB and other stretches, highlighting the potential risks of two-wheelers slipping on the uneven surfaces. He suggested that if the recarpeting process was to be delayed, the road milling work should have been delayed as well. Urgent measures should now be taken to recarpet the scrapped road stretches as soon as possible, he added. “Notably, the Southern Bypass road had developed numerous potholes at various locations due to the earlier delay in repair work. INBRIEF 40-YEAR-OLD HIT BY COUSIN’S BIKE, DIES Ludhiana: A 40-year-old man has lost his life after he was allegedly hit by a motorcycle being driven his cousin. The deceased has been identified as Gurdeep Singh of Lohara. The police have booked Amarjit Singh, who hails from the same village. Bahadur Singh, the father of the deceased, said Amarjit had invited Gurdeep to meet him. When Gurdeep was on his way to meet Amarjit, the latter hit him with a speeding motorcycle. Gurdeep Singh was taken to the Civil Hospital, but was declared dead. In the first case, a 23year-old boy allegedly ended his life by hanging himself with a ceiling fan in his room in A-1 Colony near Bhamian Kalan, Ludhiana. The deceased has been identified as Gaurav Kumar. Nand Kishore, the father of the deceased person, alleged that his son had a friendship with a girl, and they both wanted to get married. He alleged that Archana of Himachal Pradesh, who is the girl’s mother, was threatening Gaurav to stay away from her daughter. He alleged that his son ended his life as he was harassed by the accused woman. A case under Section 306 of the IPC has been registered against the accused at the Ludhiana, January 22 He was just seven-month-old when he lost both his parents and grandmother in the Giaspura gas leak tragedy that claimed 11 lives and left four injured here on April 30 last. Now, this ill-fated toddler is 16-month-old and has got Rs 50-lakh as compensation for the loss of his beloved mother, father and paternal grandmother. He was among the next of kin of all 11 victims and four injured persons who have been disbursed a sum of Rs 2.24 crore as per the order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). Deputy Commissioner Surabhi Malik has submitted a report to this effect before the NGT Principal Bench, headed by Prakash Shrivastava, and comprising judicial member Sudhir Agarwal, and executive members Dr A Senthil Vel and Dr Afroz Ahmad, recently. He alleged that Aarti’s husband used to harass and physically assault her. He forced her to consume a poisonous substance, which ended her life. A case under Section 306 of the IPC has been registered against Rakesh Kumar of Nanda Colony, Ludhiana. Owing to Yug’s minority, the case of his legal guardianship is yet to be decided. TRIBUNE PHOTO The NGT, which had taken a suo motu notice of the tragedy, had on May 2 last ordered the DC to ensure payment of compensation at the rate of Rs 20-lakh each to the heirs of 11 persons, who had died, and compensation of Rs 1-lakh each to those four persons, who were injured in the c m y b tragedy. In an affidavit submitted before the NGT, the DC has informed that she had appointed Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Ludhiana (West) as nodal officer for disbursement of compensation amount. As per report received from SDM (West), the compensation to the next of kin of the 8 deceased persons at the rate of Rs 20-lakh each has been disbursed and compensation of Rs 1-lakh each has been paid to the four injured persons in the tragedy. It was submitted that after the death of Sourav Goyal and his wife Preeti Goyal, their son Yug was the only heir, so the amount of compensation of Rs 40-lakh (Rs 20-lakh for each deceased) has to be disbursed to their son Yug in the shape of FDR as he was a minor. Besides, after the death of Kamlesh Goyal, her two sons namely Sourav Goyal (deceased) and Gourav Goyal were the heirs of deceased Kamlesh Goyal and the amount of compensation in the lieu of the deceased Kamlesh Goyal was to be disbursed amongst her both sons in the equal share — Rs 10-lakh each. Since one of her sons Sourav Goyal and daughterin-law Preeti Goyal wife of Sourav Goyal had died in the tragedy, their only son Yug becomes one of the two heirs of Kamlesh Goyal following which the amount of compensation at the rate of Rs 10-lakh each was liable to be paid to Kamlesh’s grandson Yug and son Gourav Goyal. “As Yug is minor, the case of his legal guardianship is yet to be decided and is under process,” the DC said. She apprised the NGT that a sum of Rs 45-lakh has been deposited in Yug Goyal’s joint account with his maternal grandfather, who has been declared “fit” person by the District Child Protection Officers in Ludhiana and Sultanpur (Uttar Pradesh), where Yug’s maternal grandfather resides, with a condition that the FDR must be matured at the age of attaining of maturity of Yug. “SDM (West) has submitted the fresh report for paying Yug remaining Rs 5lakh, which has to be released from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF),” Surabhi said while stating that the SDM (West) has written to the Under Secretary, PMNRF praying that the amount of compensation of Rs 5-lakh may also be paid to Yug Goyal in the shape of FDR with the condition that the FDR must mature at the age of attaining maturity of Yug and the FDR would remain in the custody of his maternal grandfather, who has been declared “fit” person by the competent authorities,” the DC told the NGT.
