A Division Bench of Justice Sudhir Singh and Justice Harsh Bunger issued the direction while hearing a bunch of petitions on the matter. The high court, however, made it clear that the Administration should either fix another date, or the Bench would pass an order on merit. As the matter came up for resumed hearing, the Bench was of the opinion that some date in January was required to be fixed. If the UT officials were busy till January 26, any date post Republic Day, preferably January 28 or 29, could be fixed. Once the court started hearing the matter on merit, it would not allow the UT to back out, the Bench observed and adjourned the matter for further hearing to Wednesday. An affidavit by the UT placed before the high court said effective steps had been taken to ensure the conduct continued on page 2 Estimate exceeds ~100 cr, MHA nod sought SHORTER AIRPORT ROUTE UT to begin acquiring land after Centre’s approval Dushyant Singh Pundir Tribune News Service Chandigarh, January 23 To streamline travel to Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in Mohali, the UT Administration has sent a proposal for a shorter route to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for its approval. UT Administrator Banwarilal Purohit today chaired a meeting in this regard. The proposal has been sent to the MHA for its financial approval since the project cost exceeds Rs 100 crore. The land acquisition process, estimated to take over six months, will com- c m y b mence therafter. The UT recently issued a notification for the acquisition of 35 acres of land for the shorter route under its Negotiation Policy and offered a compensation in the range of Rs 2.54 crore to Rs 3.34 crore per acre. The landowners, however, sought acquisition under alternative policies. The average AQI (air quality index) on Tuesday stood at 344 around 8.05 pm, while it was 343 on Monday. The AQI reading at the continuous ambient air quality monitoring station in Sector 22 was 362. The station in Sector 53, bordering Mohali, recorded the highest AQI level of 376 and the one in Sector 25 logged 295. TC Nautiyal, Director, Environment, UT, said the drop in the air quality might be due to the prevailing weather conditions and also, there were reports of garbage burning mostly by junk dealers in the adjoining areas of the city. With no rain expected any time soon, the AQI is likely to remain high in the coming days as well, according to the Meteorological Department. The AQI between 301 and 400 is considered “very poor” and can cause respiratory illness on prolonged exposure. The AQI between 401 and 500 is considered “severe” and can affect healthy people and seriously impacts those with existing diseases.
