The complainant, Dr Rupinder Singh, said he lives in the USA while his father Harbans Singh, a former scientist, was staying alone in Ludhiana. Baljit Kaur was like a daughter to his father and she was taking care of the latter here. On December 15 last year, when he returned to India, his father said Baljit had held him captive for several days in the house and decamped with ornaments and documents. Later, he lodged a police complaint and a case was registered against her on Tuesday. The Sarabha Nagar police started conducting raids to nab the suspect. The suspects have been identified as Kushal Kumar (44) of Civil Lines, Sandeep Sethi (40) of Durgapuri, Haibowal, Onkar Singh (27) of Shankarpur mohalla and Dinesh Kumar (43) and Vivek Kumar (46), both local residents. Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) Saumya Mishra and Superintendent of Police Jasroop Kaur Bath addressed a press conference regarding the matter on Wednesday. Mishra said the police had received a tip-off that the suspects had been committing fraud with people on the pretext of investing money in the share market and in sports betting through a betting app. When the police verified information, it came to fore that Kushal, Sandeep and Onkar had been indulging in illegal trading in the share market and they were possessing software of various companies. The JCP said the suspect had also taken a bungalow on rent on the club road for running a racket where they had set up computers and other equipment to pursue trading for their customers. They had committed fraud with many people by siphoning off their money on the pretext of investment in the share market. Mishra said initially, Onkar was arrested and then Kushal and Sandeep were arrested from their office at the Feroze Gandhi market. On their questioning, Dinesh and Vivek were also nominated in the case and were later arrested from their office in Millerganj. “This is a big racket being run by the suspects. TRAFFIC CONGESTION Harshraj Singh Tribune News Service Ludhiana, January 24 The longstanding issue of traffic congestion on an old bridge over the Buddha Nullah, connecting Tajpur Road and Tibba Road, is expected to be resolved with the provision of a dual carriageway. The municipal corporation (MC) has initiated the tendering process to widen the current way by constructing a new bridge along the existing one in the vicinity of Amrit Dharma Kanda and Mata Karam Kaur Colony. Residents have persistently advocated for the expansion of the old bridge due to the recurring issue of substantial traffic jams, particularly during the evening hours. The old bridge has become a bottleneck, and the urgency to address the concern has prompted the corporation to allocate approximately Rs 3.85 crore to construct another bridge. Technical bids for the project are scheduled to be unveiled on February 6. Gurinder Singh of nearby Mata Karam Kaur Colony highlighted the long-pending plea for widening the existing bridge way, emphasising the prevalent traffic congestion as a significant challenge. Daily occurrences of extensive traffic jams on the old bridge had compounded the issue, sometimes making it difficult for vehicles to pass through it. In addition to the construction of the new bridge, he also urged the MC to undertake repairs on the deteriorated safety walls of the old bridge. Also, there is a need to reinforce the banks of the nullah. Another resident said the connection between a number of areas on Tajpur Road and Tibba Road relies heavily on the existing old bridge and construction of another bridge was expected to bring substantial relief to commuters and residents in surrounding areas. The enhancement of the bridge was not only seen as a solution to alleviate traffic congestion but also considered crucial for ensuring the safety of commuters. An official from the corporation said plans were underway to construct a new bridge District goes into election mode, 26.57 lakh voters to elect MP Nitin Jain Tribune News Service Ludhiana, January 24 With the Election Commission of India (ECI) giving April 16 as the tentative date for the conduct of the next Lok Sabha elections, the state’s biggest and largest district, in terms of Assembly constituencies and voters, Ludhiana has gone into the poll mode with the publication of the final electoral rolls.
