The suspect has been identified as Rahul of Bidherh in Himachal Pradesh, at present staying in Kharar. ASI Suraajdeen said the police team arrested a resident of Kharar with 10 gm of heroin during a search operation at Kotla Shamshpur on the national highway near Samrala. He was stopped on the basis of suspicion. When searched, 10 gm of heroin was seized from him. The probe was on in the case, the police said. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against him. — OC Social activist held for making obscene comments Ludhiana, January 28 The Ludhiana police yesterday arrested a social activist, Gurinder Singh Rangreta, for making obscene comments, using abusive language and posting objectionable posts on social media. Complainant PP Sukhwinder Singh said he had shared a post on Facebook some time ago and Dr Rangreta made obscene remarks while commenting on his post. The Shimlapuri police registered a case against him. Especially the situation at Clock Tower and the Chaura Bazaar has been worsening with each passing day. Despite several meetings of the police and municipal corporation with old city market associations, nothing fruitful came out of these. Commuters have been facing inconvenience due to traffic hurdles being caused by encroachments by shopkeepers and roadside vendors. During visit to the old city areas, it was observed that many shopkeepers encroached parts of the road. Besides, roadside vendors selling eatables, clothes and other items put up their makeshift vends on the road, hence turning wide roads of the old city areas into narrow ones, leaving commuters to face issues. Youth dies, ASI hurt as SUV hits three on Dholewal bridge Tribune News Service Ludhiana, January 28 A rashly driven Ford Endeavour vehicle rammed into three persons in the wee hours of Sunday on the Dholewal bridge, killing a youth on the spot and leaving the two others, including an ASI, injured. The deceased has been identified as Hardeep Singh Vicky (33), a resident of Sherpur, here. Jaspreet Kaur, sister of the deceased, said her brother owned an agency of DTDC courier. He used to get vehicles loaded mostly at night. Early this morning, he was returning home after finishing his work with his friend Rahul. On the Dholewal bridge, he saw some miscreants robbing a pedestrian. Afterwards, he went to the nearby Janakpuri police post to call the police. He brought ASI Jasbir Singh to the scene in his car. However, before their arrival, the robbers fled the place. When the policeman was interacting with the pedestrian, a speeding Ford Endeavour coming from the Ludhiana bus stand side hit the divider and then rammed into the ASI, Hardeep and latter’s friend Rahul. The vehicle also hit Hardeep’s car. Hardeep died on the spot while the ASI sustained a head injury and Rahul also suffered a serious leg injury. Rahul said after the accident, the driver of the SUV came out of the vehicle by opening its sunroof and fled the scene. The police said the SUV was taken in police custody and a case against the unidentified driver was registered. Efforts were on to identify the suspect. 15 mobiles seized from jail inmates in surprise checks Ludhiana, January 28 A surprise checking conducted at the Central Jail, Ludhiana, led to the seizure of 15 mobile phones from jail inmates in two raids. Assistant superintendent of jail Surinderpal Singh said on January 7, he, along with jail staff, conducted a surprise checking in the jail. Belongings of the inmates was thoroughly checked and even suspicious persons were also frisked. During the checking, nine mobile phones were recovered from four inmates, Vishal Sharma, Karamjit Singh, Sukhdev Singh and Amarpal Singh. A case under the Prisons Act was yesterday registered against the inmates and further investigation was launched by the police to inquire about sources that facilitated the delivery of the phones inside the jail. Assistant superintendent of jail Harbans Singh said on January 9, he along with his team conducted a surprise checking in the jail which led to the recovery of six mobile phones from five inmates. They were identified as Sandeep Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Kamamljit Singh, Jaswant Singh and Amandeep Singh. A case under the Prisons Act was registered against them by the police on Saturday. Notably, the seizure of mobile phones from the inmates of the Central jail has become a routine affair. Even several videos of jail inmates had also gone viral in social media in the past. Loss of goods and machinery worth lakhs of rupees reported in the incident. A short-circuit was said to be the cause behind the fire. As per information, the fire started around 1.10 pm and fire tenders reached the spot to douse the flames. Firemen took around three hours to control the fire. They had to face challenges in dousing the flames as the factory was situated in a narrow lane. Since the fire personnel had reached the spot on time, the blaze was controlled on the ground floor only and was prevented from spreading to the first and second floors. Had the fire spread to other floors, huge stock and machinery lying there would have also been reduced to ashes. Local residents said factories should not be allowed in narrow lanes. Fire officials must check whether the owner of the factory had made any fire safety arrangement or not. Many people have houses in the area and there was a panic among them due to the incident. Mandi Ahmedgarh, Jan 28 The Dehlon police claimed to have busted a gang that has been involved in drug peddling in the guise of transportation of goods for traders and arrested one of its members. Two persons were booked under the NDPS Act on Saturday. They had succeeded in evading arrest during a raid on Dry Port Road at Lehra village late on Saturday evening. They were identified as Hoshiar Singh Soni of Jodhan village and Jammu Singh of Ghungrana village. The police team conducted raids on the outskirts of Lehra village on the basis of the tip-off on Saturday but the duo succeeded in dodging the police. Jammu was later arrested with the huge quantity of contraband being carried in 50 bags. Though the police are yet to identify other members of the gang, if any, and the origin of the seized narcotics, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had been involved in the illicit trade of drug peddling for over 10 years. The suspect has been identified as Avtar Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran. Investigating officer ASI Sukhwinder Singh said the police party had laid a naka at a strategic place on Saturday to keep a check on anti-social elements and smugglers. During the checking, a man, who was coming from Mandi Gobindgarh, asked to stop for checking. The person, instead of paying heed to the signal of the police, tried to flee but he was nabbed by them after a brief chase. The ASI said when the bag of the suspect was checked, 36,600 intoxicating tablets were seized. He failed to give any document pertaining to the recovery of the tablets. The police arrested the suspect and a case was registered against him. The ASI said now, a police remand of the suspect would be sought to bust the entire drug supply line so that main suppliers of the intoxicating tablets could be held. The park is being established at the Rose Garden here by using defunct parts of motor vehicles and other machinery that are of no use. The project is expected to be completed and inaugurated in February. MC’s Executive Engineer Balwinder Singh said five sculptures had been erected at the park site while the fencing and lighting works were yet to be completed under the project. People were seen warding off the cold by siting outside in the sun and munching on some winter delicacies. However, yellow alert has been issued for dense to very dense fog in the region. The maximum temperature recorded by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today was 19.5°C while the minimum was 6.9°C. Day’s length has also increased to 10 hours and 38 minutes. According to the Depart- ment of Climate Change and Agricultural Meteorology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), the weather is expected to remain dry with the possibility of cold wave conditions/dense fog during morning hours over Ludhiana and its adjoining areas during the next 24 hours. The average air quality index (AQI) of Ludhiana as recorded by the Central Pollution Control Board was 203 on Sunday and it again slipped to the ‘poor’ category. On Saturday, the AQI improved significantly as compared to the past few days. It was 96 on Saturday, which is considered ‘satisfactory’. “Though mornings and evenings are bit too cold but the sun provides relief during the day. We are hoping for better days ahead and wish that the intense cold conditions subside,” said Raj Kumar, a city resident.
