Investigating officer (IO) Davinder Singh said the accused had been identified as Balkar Singh, alias Balkari, a resident of Dharma Dian Chhana village. He was wanted in a case of drug peddling registered in 2023 and was declared a PO recently. OC 33 BOOKED FOR ASSAULT, RIOTING Phagwara: The Mehat Pur police have booked 33 persons on the charge of assault, criminal intimidation and rioting. Investigating officer (IO) Jaswinder Singh said the suspects had been identified as Dilbag Singh, alias Bagi, a resident of Vehran village, and his 32 unidentified accomplices. Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Mundian Kalan village in Ludhiana, complained to the police that the suspects waylaid him and his colleagues in the village and assaulted and threatened him. The IO said a case under Sections 323, 341, 506, 148 and 149 of the IPC had been registered against the accused. No arrests have been made. OC THREE BOOKED FOR MOTOR THEFT Phagwara: The Shahkot police have booked three persons on the charge of stealing a motor from a farmer’s borewell. Investigating officer (IO) Kashmir Singh said the suspects had been identified as Deepa Singh, a resident of Jalal Pur village in Moga, Pamma Singh, a resident of Bahmannia village, and Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Rame village. Gajann Singh, a resident of Kawan Wala village in Moga, complained to the police that the suspects barged into his borewell room in Thammu Wal village on the night of January 22 and stole a motor. A case has been registered. OC Lone nurse for 60 beds in three wards at Civil Hospital Accident survivor awaits head scan; staff say no attendant with him Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 31 A sole staff nurse attended to 60 beds (about 40 to 42 of which were filled) of three wards at the Civil Hospital here today and one of them was Gobinda, the sole survivor of the accident that took place on the JalandharAmritsar road last night. Gobinda, who suffered injuries after an Audi hit an e-rickshaw, was admitted to the hospital last night after the accident. He was taken to the emergency ward from where he was shifted to the male surgical ward on the third floor after first aid. Even after 20 hours of the accident, Gobinda, who is reported to have sustained a head injury, could not get head scan done till 5 pm today. The staff deputed at the male surgical ward is also simultaneously responsible for the medico-legal cases (MLC) and orthopaedic wards, which collectively have 60 beds of which 42 were occupied this evening. One of these patients was Govinda. With a blanket kept near his head and the sheet on the hospital mattress partly off, Gobinda lay in a dishevelled state without any warm bed covers. He was in the same soiled and blood-stained clothes that he was wearing last night. He had a canola on his hand and a bandage on his head. The staff said his blood and other tests had been conducted. Two tablets lay on his bedside table still unopened. While Gobinda appeared heavily sedated, patients on neighbouring THIEVES STRIKE AT JEWELLERY SHOP Phagwara: The Nakodar city police have booked unidentified persons on the charge of stealing jewellery from a jewellery shop. Sourav Kumar, a resident of Mohalla Guru Nanak Pura, Nakodar, complained to the police that suspects entered his shop on the night of January 29 and stole gold and silver jewellery. Investigating officer Rannjit Singh said a case under Sections 457, 380 and 427 of the IPC had been registered against the suspects. Unable to speak properly, he responded with his eyes closed saying he was on a bike last night (police said there was no bike involved in the accident) and said no one from his home came to the hospital. The hospital staff said Govinda had been checked by doctors once and would shortly be administered IV (intra-venous) medicines. Notably, while all accident patients in the pre-Covid period used to be sent to the trauma ward, due to the trauma centre being converted into an isolation facility due to the Covid protocol, all injured and trauma patients began to be routed to the Civil Hospital emergency ward. From the emergency ward, these accident cases are sent to male/female medical, surgical and other wards. The suspects first entered Aarti Jewellers in Dakhni Gate, Nakodar, after breaking open the shutters. They took away gold and silver ornaments worth around ~6 lakh. Blood stains were found on the floor when the cops reached the morning. One of the miscreants sustained injuries while breaking the glass, the police said. In another incident, the burglars entered a shop, HR Trading Company, after breaking through the roof on the same night. They took away gold ornaments worth around ~4 lakh. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Prem Chand, working at Naib Court in the Nakodar court complex, recorded his statement with the police stating that the suspect - Rannjit Singh, alias Saabi, a resident of Nangal Ambian village falling under the Shahkot police station - had surrendered in the court on January 19 in a case filed by Punjab Gramin Bank. In his statement, the ASI said Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Dr Jubli had ordered that the suspect be sent to judicial custody till February 2. The ASI said the suspect, who was arrested under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, was in lockup (Bakshi khana) in the judicial court complex. While he was being taken out, the suspect pushed him and ran away. He tried his best to catch him, but could not succeed. Investigating officer Hans Raj said a case under Section 224 of the IPC had been registered against Saabi and a manhunt launched to arrest him. Since it is a preelection budget, it will be a budget with a wholesome populist tadka. We are expecting an increase in the basic exemption limit and some favourable changes in the standard deduction of income tax and housing loan schemes. Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 31 The initiative of the city police to bring traffic staff and PCR under one umbrella, named as Emergency Response System (ERS), has started yielding results. Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said the ERS helped in increasing security in the city on one hand and nabbing criminals on the other. It recently helped in nabbing two snatchers. He said “Zebra 24”, manned by ASI Dhanesh Kumar and Jagwinder Singh, and “Romeo 59”, manned by ASI Harbhans Singh, saw two youth during a vigil. During search, the police recovered seven mobile phones and an Activa scooter from them. The suspects were identified as Sanjay and Amandeep Singh, both residents of Jalandhar. The Police Commissioner said during investigation, it came to fore that the duo was involved in snatching incidents in the city. The suspects were later handed over to the Basti Bawa Khel police. A case under Sections 411, 34 and 379-B of the IPC was registered against them. Phagwara, January 31 Nihang Sikh Ramandeep Singh Mangumath, who was arrested for killing a youth at Gurdwara Chhevi Patshahi here, has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days. The police produced him in the court of Surekha Dadwal, Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Phagwara. The court sent him to Modern Jail, Kapurthala. The court set February 13 as the next date of hearing. Mangumath had killed Vishal Kapoor, a gullible orphan from Delhi, while he too was staying in the same gurdwara for the night. Mangumath made his video before and after the murder alleging that he was about to attempt sacrilege in the gurdwara. Initially, a case under Section 304 was registered against him. Later, murder charges were added to the case. Two nabbed with 60 gm heroin Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 31 The city police have arrested two drug smugglers and recovered 60 grams of heroin from their possession. Divulging details, the police said a team of the special cell saw a youth during patrolling near the PIMS Hospital T-point. On suspicion, the team signalled him to stop for checking. On seeing the police, the youth threw a polythene bag on the roadside. “During checking, the police recovered 50 grams of heroin from the polythene bag and arrested the suspect,” they said. The police said the suspect had been identified as Chetan, alias Monu, a resident of Bhullar Colony, Dakoha.
