Two persons died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries during treatment. The lone survivor, Govinda, is presently admitted to the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, where his condition is stated to be serious. Investigating officer Jasvir Singh said the accused had been identified as Gagan Deep Singh, alias Gagan, a resident of Gill village. The accused is wanted in a case of theft. OC THREE BOOKED IN DOWRY CASE Shahkot: The police have booked there persons of family in a dowry harassment case. The suspects have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Punia village, his father Surinder Pal Singh and mother Parveen Latta Kaur. Hardeep Kaur, wife of Gurpreet Singh, complained to the police that she was being tortured for dowry ever since her marriage. Investigating officer Kashmir Singh said a case under Sections 406 and 498-A had been registered against the suspects. OC CASH, JEWELLERY, MOBIKE STOLEN Nurmahal: The Bilga police have booked unidentified persons on the charge of stealing cash, jewellery and a motorcycle from a house. Dass Ram Leel, a resident of Pati Bhoja Bilga village, complained to the police that thieves barged into his house after breaking open the locks. They stole cash, gold jewellery, a motorcycle and other household items. Investigating officer Anwar Masih said a case under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC had been registered against the suspects. OC THREE HELD WITH BANNED VIALS FILE Jalandhar, February 1 Two days after an Audi car hit an e-rickshaw on the Jalandhar-Amritsar highway leading to the death of four persons, the police are yet to arrest the car driver. The suspect has been identified as Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Chandigarh. In the past two days, the Jalandhar police have carried out raids in Chandigarh, Batala, Kalanaur and Gurdaspur among other areas to trace the car driver. A search was also made at the houses of his relatives and kin, the police said. Sikander Singh, SHO of the Maqsudan police station, said: “Intensive raids are being carried out in various districts in search of the car driver, who originally hails from Batala. Search is being conducted across various districts. Govinda and I are the only earning members of the family. After seeing his scan report, doctors said he was out of danger. However, his speech and conversation are not normal and he sleeps all day. His health is bad. I’m a make-up artist in Chandigarh. We don’t have money. If possible, we will like to admit him to a private hospital. I appeal to the government to do something about this. The culprit should be punished.” Govinda’s sister Lalita said a stranger informed her about the accident around 2 am on the fateful day. She, along with her husband, went to the Kartarpur police station looking for him, but couldn’t find him. They went to the accident site where they were told that he was admitted to the Civil Hospital. They came to meet him that day and went home late. They visited him again last evening. His family was also traced and informed about the incident. Govinda’s condition, however, still remains critical. Govinda, a sofa-maker, was living with his father in Jalandhar and was hitching a ride back to the city after work when the accident took place. He is the only brother of two sisters. From bed number 33 in the ward, Govinda was shifted to bed number 41 today. After this correspondent highlighted his plight, he also underwent a head scan last evening. Today, he was in the MLC ward wrapped in blankets and surrounded by family. Govinda’s sister Sapna (30) came to the Civil Hospital last evening after being informed about his condition. According to information, the Garhshankar police arrested Shankar Das and Manpreet, residents of Beenewal village, and recovered intoxicating injections and pills from them. The Mahilpur police arrested Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Posi village, and recovered a large number of intoxicating injections from him. OC Jalandhar, February 1 Congress MLAs and leaders today handed over a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Vishesh Sarangal on the issue of illegal mining in some villages of the Jalandhar Cantonment Assembly constituency. MLAs Pargat Singh, Hardev S Laddi Sherowalia and Avtar Henry, District Congress Committee chief Rajinder Beri and sarpanches of some villages met the DC apprising him of illegal mining along the Chitti Bein rivulet. The leaders said some mining smugglers, backed by Aam Aadmi Party, were going to a depth of 30-35 ft endangering environment, ecology, public safety, norms and principles. Three women among 5 held with opium Jalandhar, February 1 The city police have arrested five drug smugglers, including three women, all natives of Jharkhand, with 5 kg of opium. Divulging details, Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said the police got a tip-off that a gang of smugglers was operating in the city. Acting on the information, the police laid a trap at Baba Budha Ji flyover on Wednesday. The police saw five persons, including three women, coming from the Kapurthala side. During checking, 1 kg of opium was recovered found each person,” he said. He said a case under Sections 18, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act had been registered against the suspects. While there was no criminal record against four persons, Bablu was a proclaimed offender as a case under the NDPS Act was already registered against him in Jalandhar. — TNS c m y b DC Sarangal takes stock of facilities at hospital Jalandhar: Deputy Commissioner Vishesh Sarangal on Thursday said as per the directions issued by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Civil Surgeon, SMOs and Medical Superintendent would ensure that no patient had to take medicine from outside the government hospital as the district administration had already ensured sufficient supply of all essential medicines to all government hospitals to be provided free-of-cost to patients. The Deputy Commissioner visited the Civil Hospital to ensure proper implementation of these directions wherein he took stock of the healthcare facilities being provided to patients here. The DC reviewed the stock of medicines and took feedback from visitors at the hospital. He also listened to the problems being faced by patients and directed health officials to resolve them immediately. Investigating officer (IO) Kashmir Singh said the suspects had been identified as Akash Deep, Sukhpreet Singh, alias Sukh, residents of Nihaluwal village, and Gurbakash Singh, alias Juj, a resident of Seche Wal village. In his complaint to the police, Rahul Chawla, a resident of Nihalu Wal village, said while he was going for a stroll in the village ground on the evening of January 30, one of suspects came there on Victim admitted to Civil Hospital a motorcycle. He held him by the neck and fired a shot at him. The bullet pierced his abdomen. Rahul said another suspect, Gurbakhsh, also pointed a pistol at him. He, however, fled after he raised an alarm. Harnek Singh, a farmer from Kulliya village near Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala, who provides seedlings of almost 15 vegetables prepared in 3 acres of his vegetable nursery, claimed to have suf- fered losses worth lakhs. Harnek, who prepares seedlings of broccoli, capsicum, green chilli, onion, tomato, etc., said: “Hailstorm caused damage in entire 3 acres. It is a huge loss. I don’t know how I will bear it”. Bhupinder Singh, a farmer from Tarfa Haji village, said there was a massive damage to fodder crop in the area. “Farmers, who had sown late potato varieties, also suffered losses. Leaves of cauli- flower also suffered some damage,” the growers said. Balwinder Singh, a potato grower from Hazipur village in Kapurthala, said he had sown late variety of potato on 50 acres. “Around 60 per cent of the crop has been damaged. Damage to this extent has been reported after a long time,” the farmer claimed. The growers said it would be difficult for them to make up with the losses. The suspects were arrested while they were going to Rasoolpur from Uggi village. They have been identified as Baljinder Singh, alias Motu, a resident of Talwandi Salem village in Nakodar, and Baljinder Kaur, a resident of Latianwal village in Sultanpur Lodhi. A case under Sections 22-B, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against the suspects at the Sadar Nakodar police station here. ‘THREAT LETTER’ 5 days on, cops yet to make headway Jalandhar, February 1 The police are yet to make any headway in the case involving a threat letter to a local businessman. Even after five days, the police are clueless about the suspects. Shikhar, a cloth showroom owner, found a threatening letter, along with a live cartridge, outside his shop near Basti Adda Chowk on the morning of January 27. The letter, composed in Hindi and signed with initials LB and GB, contained ominous warnings of dire consequences if the demands outlined within were not met. — TNS
