Investigating officer (IO) Kashmir Singh said the suspect had been identified as Gurbaksh Singh, a resident of Seche Wal village. The IO said a case under Sections 307 and 34 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered against the suspect and his two accomplices, who are absconding. According to the IO, a pistol and six live cartridges were recovered from his possession. While two of the families took the bodies of their kin, the family of Jagdish Chander said they would perform the last rites tomorrow. Meanwhile, the accident has left behind helpless families, deprived of their sole breadwinners, with their kin having to fend for themselves. SARABJIT SINGH Phagwara, February 2 A 16-year-old girl died in a road mishap on the Phillaur-Talwan road this afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Mandip Kaur, a resident of MaoSahib village near Phillaur. The girl, who was working in Ludhiana, was returning to her village along with her colleague Deepak on a bike which collided with another bike. As a result, Mandip fell on the road and was run over by a speeding truck. The truck driver managed to flee leaving the vehicle behind. Last year, the oilseed crop was sown on around 3,500 acres. This year, it is on mere 400 acres. The reason behind a dip in the area was fog as it had damaged the crop last year. Farmers had to plough the crop and they didn’t get proper price for it. The crop is sown in October and harvested between February end and beginning of March. People, who were going to a religious site, spotted the foetus in the village pond. After getting information, the police reached the spot. They took the foetus into their possession and started investigations into the case. SHO Hargurdev Singh said the foetus was sent to the Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination. Medical teams also started searching data of pregnant women in the area to trace the suspect who dumped the foetus. The SHO said: “It appears to be a female foetus. It has been kept in the mortuary of the Civil Hospital. Action will be taken against the person who dumped the foetus.”— TNS
