The victims, residents of Aman Nagar, fell prey to the cunning tactics of cybercriminals who lured them into investing money in the share market under false pretences. The ordeal began when the sisters, both college teachers, were added to a WhatsApp group named Eleworld Wealth Training Camp, purportedly offering insights into share market trading. The group, initiated from an unknown number, provided tips and guidance on trading practices, fostering a sense of trust among its members. The fraudulent activities commenced in January, when the victims received a link within the group, prompting them to create IDs and invest money. Initially, investments seemed profitable as the money multiplied with apparent interest accruals. However, attempts to withdraw funds from the trading account proved futile, with the system citing a requirement of 20 per cent interest deposit. Realising they had fallen prey to a scam, the victims reported the incident to the group administrator first, only to be met with silence. Two days later, they were abruptly removed from the WhatsApp group, confirming their suspicions of being deceived. One of the victims, recounted the ordeal to the police, disclosing that approximately Rs 3.25 lakh and Rs 15.66 lakh were invested by her and her sister, respectively, through the fraudulent account. Despite apparent increases in their trading account balances, they were unable to withdraw funds. She said they had transferred the amount to two different bank accounts in two transactions. She said they had shared all bank details, WhatsApp chats and other related proofs with the police. Pardeep Kumar, SHO, Division No. 8, said on the basis of the statements and evidence provided by the victims, a case had been registered under relevant sections of the IPC and the IT Act. He said with help from the cyber cell, the police had launched an investigation into the case and were tracking details of the WhatsApp group administrator and the investment app in question.
