Swift also announced from the Grammys stage that she would release a new album in April. The 34-year-old won album of the year for Midnights, eclipsing music legends Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder, who each claimed the prize three times. “It makes me so happy. All I want to do is keep doing this,” she said. Earlier, Swift claimed the prize for best pop vocal performance and used the moment to announce that she would release The Tortured Poets Department on April 19. Leading ladies Swift, who is about to jet to Tokyo to resume the world’s highest-grossing concert tour, was among the women who swept the major Grammy awards on Sunday. Billie Eilish claimed song of the year for What Was I Made For?, a ballad written for the Barbie movie soundtrack. “As a woman, it feels a lot of the time like you’re not being seen “I feel that this makes me feel very seen. Sometimes it feels really good to have somebody tell you ‘good job’,” Eilish said backstage. Miley Cyrus, winner of her first two Grammys on Sunday, landed the record of the year honour for her empowerment anthem Flowers. “This award is amazing,” Cyrus said. “But I really hope that it doesn’t change anything because my life was beautiful yesterday,” she added. Best new artist went to R&B and pop singer Victoria Monet, who thanked her mom, “a single mom raising this really bad girl”. SZA, who went into the night as the most-nominated artiste, won three trophies, including best R&B song for Snooze. “I came really, really far,” she said. “I can’t believe this is happening, and it feels very fake,” she added. Indie rock band Boygenius, a band formed by musicians Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, also claimed three awards. In accepting the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, rapper Jay-Z aired some Grammy grievances, including the fact that his superstar wife Beyonce had never won album of the year despite having earned more Grammys than anyone else. “I don’t want to embarrass this young lady,” Jay-Z said as Beyonce watched from the audience. “But she has more Grammys than anyone and never won album of the year. While Hussain was India’s big winner with three Grammys, Rakesh Chaurasia picked up two. Singer Shankar Mahadevan, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram, Hussain’s collaborators in the fusion group Shakti, won one Grammy . Shakti won the 2024 Gram- my Award for best global music album for This Moment. The album features the four Indians as well as its founding member, the legendary British guitarist John McLaughlin. This Moment, which released to critical acclaim in June 2023, is the group’s first studio album in more than 45 years. Besides his award for Shakti, Hussain won two other awards — the best global music performance for Pashto and best contemporary instrumental album for As We Speak. Rakesh Chaurasia, nephew of legendary flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia, won two Grammys as part of the ensemble of American banjo player Bela Fleck and American bassist Edgar Meyer for Pashto and As We Speak. This is not the first win for Hussain at the awards organised by the US-based Recording Academy. He earlier won Grammys, across categories and in solo capacity as well as in collaborations, in 1991, 1996 and 2008. The As We Speak team — Hussain, Meyer, Fleck and Chaurasia — were also nominated for best instrumental composition for motion. Sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar was the first musician from India to win a Grammy Award (best chamber music performance) in 1968. — PTI RAPPER KILLER MIKE ARRESTED AFTER WINNING THREE AWARDS Singer Kylie Minogue has taken home the golden gramophone in an all-new category, Best Pop Dance Recording, for Padam Padam. The win marks Minogue’s second Grammy win after six career nominations. She had previously won Best Dance Recording for Come Into My World. It was one of three new categories introduced at the 66th Grammy’s, the other two being Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical and Best African Music Performance. Padam Padam charted at No. 7 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic chart; it was a much bigger hit in the UK, where it was a No. 1 hit. The song was embraced by the LGBTQ+ community on both sides of the Atlantic. Oh my God...” Boygenius Mariah Carey and Miley Cyrus TRACY CHAPMAN GETS STANDING OVATION Veteran Hollywood singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman performed her 1988 iconic track Fast Car, alongside country artist Luke Combs. The two singers, though hailing from different generations and musical genres, took the stage together on February 4 for a duet rendition of the song that has generated massive success for both of them. Decades after its initial release, Fast Car re-entered the charts when Combs’ cover of the track, infused with a country sensibility, became immensely popular in 2023. Dressed all in black, Chapman kicked off the first performance at the Grammys to the sounds of voracious cheers from the star-studded audience, which included Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson. This is after he had won three awards before the main broadcast. He was arrested due to an alleged physical altercation with a security guard at the event, according to law enforcement officials. Living a Jay-Z Living a childhood dream is Apurva Sharma. Working as an architect in Australia, she returned home to Patiala to give a chance to the singer inside her. On Monday, she launched her first song, Teriyan Judaiyan. All of 25, Apurva says she loves Indian music. “I’ve always been interested in Sufi songs. I started doing riyaz when I was in school. My father, Ashish Sharma, is a poet and he encouraged me to pursue singing along with my studies.” For her debut song, Apurva says she was working on it for the last five years. “I wanted to create something that blended Hindi and Punjabi lyrics, had some poetry. My song has all these elements.” Inspired by singers, including AP Dhillon, Neha Kakkar, Badshah, Shreya Ghoshal, Arijit Singh, she also enjoys Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber’s songs. So, is she considering a switch in careers? She responds, “No, I will continue my practice as an architect in Australia, but would also focus on music. I am already working on two other songs.” Apurva says during her growing-up years in Indonesia, she participated in stage shows where she did anchoring, choreographed songs and even sang. “People there are crazy about our music. They love Hindi and Punjabi songs. Even in school, I would sing and dance at the annual shows. Then I moved on to performing at the functions organised by the Indian government in Indonesia. During my college days in Australia, I continued to perform.”
