While government fee and facilitation charges are levied for every facility at the Suwidha Centre, no such charges are being taken from applicants at the camps. Even computers and printers from Suwidha centres have been pitched in for the work and on-thespot delivery of documentation is being done. During a visit to a camp at Kalia Colony this evening, applicants said if they deposited all supporting documents required as per the provision, they were made to wait for less than 30 minutes to get a certified and printed copy of the required certificate. Despite the orders, local rag-pickers remain defiant, persistently depositing waste collected from the neighborhood at the same site. High drama was witnessed this morning when some residents objected to the unlawful dumping and sought assistance from the police to stop the rag-pickers from throwing garbage at the site. However, the situation escalated and despite police intervention, the rag-pickers continued to unload waste from their carts at the site, arguing that the designated dump site in Pratap Bagh is inconveniently distant and subject to long waiting time due to the existing rag-picker activity. Despite police presence, ragpickers dump waste near Chuggiti chowk in Jalandhar on Tuesday. TRIBUNE PHOTO: MALKIAT SINGH In an attempt to evade police scrutiny, the ragpickers employed female counterparts to unload garbage from their carts. Despite warnings from the police, they remained undeterred. Earlier, the residents had experienced temporary relief when approximately 1,500 tonne of garbage was cleared from the site on January 22. They claimed that the dump had previously expanded to such an extent that it was encroaching upon the road, attracting stray animals and inconveniencing commuters and residents alike. With illegal dumping resur- facing, residents are once again calling upon the MC to address the issue effectively, ensuring that their neighborhood does not become a dumping ground. They said it is imperative for the MC authorities to devise sustainable solutions to alleviate their woes and maintain cleanliness in the area.
