Vendors organise a Sunday Market in which they display goods on folding beds and mats spread on footpaths and the road. A large number of devotees visit the Golden Temple on weekends. Due to illegal vends and Sunday Market encroachments, Hall Bazaar witnesses traffic congestion. As vendors encroach footpaths commuters are forced to walk on the road. Traders have also been warned not to display goods outside their shops. We will take strict action against violators.” Several illegal bazaars are organised on city roads. Man held for raping, impregnating minor Our Correspondent Tarn Taran, February 11 The Goindwal Sahib police on Saturday arrested one Gurdev Singh on the charge of sexually abusing a teenage girl who is a student of Class IX. The victim is six months pregnant. ASI Simarjit Kaur recorded the statement of the victim’s mother who said her daughter had been complaining of discomfort for the last few days. On recommendation of doctors, an ultrasound scan of the girl was conducted and her pregnancy was confirmed. The vicitm’s mother told the police that the suspect, who had been sexually abusing her daughter, threatened to kill her if she disclosed anything about it to anybody. The police said the suspect was booked under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the POCSO Act. The deceased was apparently a youth whose body was dumped by unknown killers in fields along the Ram Tirath road heading towards Khasa. The police said the message of finding a body of an unknown person had been flashed in all police stations across Punjab, besides on the social media platform, but they were yet to get any clues about the deceased. Manpreet Singh of Khiala Kalan village told the police that he and his brother had taken 30 acres on contract from Jatinderpal Singh of Maure Khurd village. He said the land was around five feet away from the road. He said yesterday he and his brother went to fields for work around 8 am when they found something wrapped in a “Lohi” (shawl). He said when they went near it, they discovered that it was body of an unknown youth. Amritsar, February 11 Perturbed over alleged harassment by money lenders, a man and his son committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance here on Friday. The police have booked two suspects and launched further investigation into the matter. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to family members after an autopsy. The deceased were identified as Maninder Singh and Harshveen Singh, both residents of Celebration Enclave, located on the Tarn Taran road here. Those booked included Inderjit Singh, alias Prince, and Chanpreet Singh. They had given Rs 2.5 lakh on loan to the victims. According to the family of the deceased, the suspects were pressurising father and son to return their money. Maninderpal Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), said raids were on to arrest the suspects who were absconding following the incident. He said a preliminary probe revealed that the duo had borrowed money from many other people in the market. The police registered a case on the charge of abetment to suicide on the complaint of Savreen Kaur, daughter of the deceased. She told the police that her father and brother had taken loan from the suspects. The victims had given a cheque to suspects. She saod Maninder and Harshveen were finding it difficult to return the money on time. She said the suspects were threatening her father and brother of getting them imprisoned in a cheque bounce case. The victim came in contact with the suspect through Instagram around two months ago. The police have registered an FIR under Sections 363, 366, 376 and 506 of the IPC and Section 4 of the POCSO Act though no arrest has been made in connection till now. The suspect was identified as Manoj Kumar, a resident of Panj Garaiya in Batala. The victim, a 12th standard student of a government sen- ior secondary school, told the police that she had been active on Instagram for past one year. She said the suspect came into contact with her on Instagram around two months ago and they became friends. She said on February 7, the suspect called her and said he would be coming to take her away. The victim alleged that though she refused, the suspect started threatening her and said he would consume poison in front of her house. The victim said she got afraid and agreed to his demand. Balram Kumar, a local resident, said, “It seems the city has no place for pedestrians. This is evident from the use of footpaths by vehicle drivers and parking of vehicles. The pedestrian paths have been constructed to help people cross roads safely.” He said drivers violating the rights of pedestrians should be dealt with strictly. The residents say the traffic police should start a special drive in areas where traffic jams are witnessed frequently. Residents said challans should be issued to drivers who do not follow traffic rules.
