The roof of the shop also collapsed due to fire. Shop owner Rajinder Kumar was away at the time of the incident. Short circuit in power supply is suspected to be the cause of fire. It took more than two hours for the fire tenders to bring the flames under control. OC ONE KILLED AS BIKE HITS STRAY CATTLE Phagwara: A 45-year-old man died after his motorcycle collided with a stray cattle. Investigating Officer (IO) Puran Singh said the deceased, had been identified as Pragat Singh, a resident of Rama Mandi in the Jalandhar Cantt area. The IO said the deceased was going to Jalandhar on his bike when his two-wheeler collided with a stray cattle on the way, killing him on the spot. The IO said the police, acting under Section 174 of the CrPC on the basis of a statement from Satwant Kaur, wife of the deceased, handed over the body to the family a after post-mortem. OC 1 BOOKED FOR RASH DRIVING Phagwara: The Nurmahal police have booked a car driver on the charge of causing death by negligence, rash driving on public road and mischief. Investigating Officer (IO) Amrik Lal said the suspect, had been identified as Parminder Singh, a resident near Sukhnipul, Alamgir, Kala Sanghian, in Kapurthala. Tilak Raj, a resident of Muglanni village under the Nakodar Sadar police station, said the suspect was driving his car negligently and hit his motorcycle on February 20 near Uppal village gate on the Nurmahal-Nakodar road, resulting in the death of Mangat Ram of Muglanni village. The IO said a case under Sections 304-A, 337, 338, 279 and 427 of the IPC was registered against Parminder. OC TWO ARRESTED UNDER NDPS ACT Phagwara: The Nakodar Sadar police have arrested a drug peddler on the charge of selling poppy husk. SHO Jai Pal said 7 kg of poppy husk was recovered from the possession of the suspect, identified as Manjit Singh, alias Kaka, a resident of Bhode village under Bilga police station. The SHO said a case under Sections 15 (b), 1 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against the suspect and the car in which he was travelling was impounded. In another incident, the Mehatpur police arrested a drug peddler identified as Shumit, a resident of Haripur village with 240 intoxicant tablets. A motorcycle he was driving was impounded, said Investigating Officer Jaspal Singh. OC ONE BOOKED FOR EXTORTION Phagwara: The Nakodar police have booked an unidentified man on the charge of extortion. Investigating Officer (IO) Rajinder Pal Singh said the victim, a resident of Malarri village, complained to the police that he received a phone call in which the suspect demanded ~5 lakh from him and threatened to kill his son if no money was paid within time at a place of his choice. The IO said a case under Sections 386, 506 and 34 of the IPC was registered against unidentified suspect. Even on Thursday, commuters shuttling between Jalandhar and Ludhiana faced blockade near Phillaur. Those going towards Pathankot side had to take a diversion from Cholang near Bhogpur and those heading towards Amritsar had to take to village routes near Dhilwan. Dharnas were organised on the call of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Qadian) to protest over the death of young farmer Shubhkaran Singh on the Khanauri border on Wednesday. The commuters said while farmers had already held Punjab bandh and blocked all highways on February 18, another blockade today by farmers Members of the farmers' union block Jalandhar-Amritsar highway at the Dhilwan toll plaza. Auto-rickshaw driver killed in road accident Our Correspondent Phagwara, February 22 An auto-rickshaw driver was killed on the spot when a speeding vehicle hit his three-wheeler bearing the registration number PB10HR-9837 near JCT Mills, Phagwara, on Wednesday night. The auto-rickshaw overturned due to the impact of the collision. The deceased was identified as Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Basti-Jodhewal, Ludhiana. The police have registered a case under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code against the unknown vehicle driver. The body was handed over to the family after an autopsy at the local Civil Hospital. Migrant woman liquor trader arrested Phagwara, February 22 The police arrested a Bihari migrant woman liquor trader and recovered 12 boxes and 16 bottles of illicit liquor from her possession last night. Clothshowroomowner opens fire at employee Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 22 In a startling incident reported at a cloth showroom in Santokhpura area here, Lakshya Verma, the owner of the establishment, allegedly discharged a firearm at one of his employees. However, the targeted employee narrowly escaped unharmed and sought police action in the case. The incident had taken place on February 16 and the victim had reported it to the police the following day, but no FIR was lodged in this connection. It was on Wednesday, the victim again visited the police and demanded action against his employer following which, the police booked Verma, under relevant sections of the IPC and launched an investigation into the case. Amit Kalyan, the victim, recounted the encounter, stating that Verma, apparently inebriated, confronted him outside the showroom over a disagreement. The argument between the duo escalated following which Verma allegedly resorted to gunfire. Sanjeev Kumar, SHO, Division No. 8, said the footage of the CCTV cameras installed at the showroom and nearby areas was being scanned to verify the victim’s allegations. He said the police had seized a licensed pistol from the suspect last year. He said they were also verifying whose pistol was used by him in the incident. Meanwhile, no arrest has been made so far leaving Verma at large. In August 2023, Verma was implicated in a similar incident of firing over a property dispute. Despite prior legal entanglements, Verma has been evading arrest. Superintendent of Police Rupinder Kaur Bhatti said that cops got a tip-off about the suspect selling illicit liquor from her Phagwara residence in Gobindpura locality. The police raided the house and arrested the woman, identified as Priyanka. Addressing the dharna, Kirti Kisan Union district president Surinder Singh Bains, Jamhuri Kisan Sabha leader Kuldeep Singh Runka, Malkit Singh Rahon of Doaba Kisan Union, Bharti Kisan Union (Lakhowal) leader Avtar Singh Sadhra, IFTU state deputy secretary Avtar Singh Tari and Women’s Jagriti Manch state president Gurbaksh Kaur Sangha said they want the government to listen to their demands and act fast. The unions said there was a long-pending struggle to ensure that the government assured MSP for every crop. “Stop installation of smart electricity meters, stop privatisation of government institutions and waive off entire debt of farmers and labourers. We also demand that the government should provide jobs to families of farmers martyred in the Kisan Morcha,” union members said. The leaders said the Central Government was deceitful. The Bachhwan and Behram toll plazas of the district were also freed for commuters by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha. Jalandhar, February 22 Four armed men brutally attacked a youth near the Masjid Chowk in Kapurthala on Wednesday, leading to his death. As per the police, the suspects attacked the youth over a dispute regarding money. The deceased, has been identified as Harpreet Singh, alias Bunty, a resident of Kapurthala. The victim was rushed to the local Civil Hospital where he was declared brought dead by doctors. An FIR was registered at the Kapurthala City police station in this connection under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC. On Thursday, the Kapurthala police nominated three persons in the FIR one of whom was identified as Lovesh Kumar, a resident of Sheikhupura in Kapurthala. Giving details, the police said the drive to nab culprits involved in drug smuggling had been intensified. The police said as a part of the drive, checking was conducted on the Verka Milk Plant service road. During checking, the police saw a person approaching on foot from the Kartarpur side. “On noticing a team of cops, the individual took a sudden U-turn and discarded a small polythene bag. Upon inspecting the bag, the police recovered 70 gm of heroin from it,” the police said, while adding that acting swiftly the person was arrested. The suspect was identified as Mandeep Singh, alias Raju, a resident of Chak Jinda village in Jalandhar district. Superintendent of Police (SP) Rupinder Kaur Bhatti, while giving details, said the road traffic would be diverted to cross Phagwara without disturbance. Traffic in-charge Inspector Aman Kumar said heavy vehicles coming from the Jalandhar side towards Ludhiana would be diverted from Haveli Dhabha via Jamsher-Zandial-NurmahalPhillaur. He said light vehicles would be diverted via Mehtan bypass-Mehli bypass-Basra Palace-Khothran Road-PipaRangi-Onkar Nagar-JCT Mills slip road and towards Goraya. He said similarly, heavy vehicles from the Ludhiana side going towards Jalandhar would be diverted through Phillaur— Nurmahal-Jandiala-Jalandhar Decked up Shri Guru Ravidas Dham in Jalandhar; and (right) traffic diversion route in Phagwara. The SP said the police would ensure smooth road traffic on diverted routes, but it could only be possible with the co-operation of commuters who would have to follow traffic rules. The SP also directed the police to ensure adequate arrangements for the shobha yatra on Friday. She along with DSP Jaspreet Singh today visited Shri Ravidas Mandir, Chak Hakim, and took stock of the arrangements made by the administration.
