Following the recent judgment and directions passed by the Supreme Court, Kuldeep Kumar Dhalor has been declared the Mayor. In accordance with Section 38 of the Punjab Municipal Act, 1976, the MC is mandated to elect one of its elected members as chairperson, known as the Mayor, along with other members to serve as the Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor. BJP’s Kuljit, Rajinder were elected Senior Deputy Mayor, Deputy Mayor on January 30 ADVANTAGE BJP BJP AAP CONGRESS 18 10 7 (17 councillors and ex officio member, i.e. MP) According to the notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner, the election, as per Regulation 3(1) of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (Procedure and Conduct of Business) Regulations, 1996, will take place on February 27 at 10 am in the Assembly Hall of the MC building and the Mayor will be the presiding authority. As per the directives of the Punjab and Haryana High SAD 1 (voted for BJP last time) Court, the Chandigarh Police will ensure adequate security measures during the election process to maintain law and order. The BJP has one-vote edge against INDIA bloc partners Congress and AAP in MC House. The Congress had filed a plea in the High Court for setting aside the elections to the two mayoral posts. The HC is to hear the case on February 26. When the BJP’s Manoj Sonkar was announced Mayor after eight votes were wrongly declared invalid by presiding officer Anil Masih, Opposition councillors had boycotted the elections to the other two posts, which are conducted by the Mayor. Since the court has set aside the Mayor’s election and declared Dhalor the winner, the two polls are to be conducted by him. The BJP councillors, Kuljit Singh and Rajinder Sharma, were declared winners against Congress’ councillors and alliance nominees Gurpreet Singh Gabi and Nirmala Devi to the posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively. The assailants, who were later arrested, had uploaded a video on Instagram, claiming to have acted on the directions Claim they acted at behest of Anmol Bishnoi of gangster Anmol Bishnoi, brother of Lawrence Bishnoi. The victim, Rinku, escaped unhurt as the assailants chased him and shot at him while he was returning from a function. The police said one shot was fired by the three assailants who were riding a motorcycle. They tried to fire again outside the complainant’s house but their pistol malfunctioned, after c m y b which they fled the scene. A CCTV camera installed outside Rinku’s house captured the incident. Soon after the incident, the accused issued threats to the victim via the Instagram post. PHOTO: VICKY P5 Two more liquor vends for city NEW EXCISE POLICY Dhanas vend reserve price cut by ~3.20 cr Tribune News Service Chandigarh, February 23 To attract bidders, the UT Excise and Taxation Department has reduced the reserve price for allotment of liquor vends in the city in the Excise Policy 2024-25, as 18 liquor vends have remained unsold in the current financial year. Although the number of liquor vends has been increased by two in the new Excise Policy compared to the current fiscal, the overall reserve price has been reduced for the auction. The reserve NO CHANGE IN MRP There will be no difference in the liquor rates because the administration has not made any changes to the MRP. The bidding process for the auction of liquor vends will start from February 26 and bids will be opened on March 7. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
