The deceased, identified as Varsha Mishra, a resident of Bihari, was married to Ravi Mishra last year. The woman’s family alleged that Varsha was being tortured physically and mentally by her in-laws and was forced to take extreme step to end her life. The police registered a case and handed over the body to her family members after the postmortem examination. OC FOUR BOOKED UNDER NDPS ACT Phagwara: The Shahkot police have booked four miscreants under the NDPS Act and Arms Act. Investigating officer (IO) and Talwandi Sanghera police post in charge Buta Ram said the suspects had been identified as Sukhpreet Singh, alias Sukha, Akashdeep, alias Musa, residents of Nihalu Wal village, Baljinder Singh, alias Jasan, a resident of Talwandi Butian village, and Hardeep Singh, a resident of Rajatal in Amritsar district. The IO said the police got a tip-off that the suspects had illegal firearms and were selling heroin. A case under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered against the suspects. Raids are being conducted to nab them. OC COUPLE AMONG 3 BOOKED FOR FRAUD Phagwara: The Lohan Khas police have booked three travel agents, including a couple, for allegedly duping a woman of ~18 lakh on the pretext of sending her abroad. Investigating officer (IO) Kashmir Singh said the suspects had been identified as Vikas Thakur, a resident of Har Gobind Nagar, Jalandhar, his wife Deeksha Thakur and his brother Rahul Thakur. Harpreet Kaur, a resident of Gidarr Pindi village, complained to the Jalandhar (rural) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) that she paid ~18 lakh to the suspects to facilitate her migration to Canada. The suspects neither sent her abroad, nor returned the money. The IO said a case under Sections 406 (breach of trust), 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) had been registered against the suspects. OC ~90K, jewellery stolen from house Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 24 In a broad daylight theft, ~90,000 in cash and jewellery worth lakhs were stolen from a house at Sat Kartar Nagar here yesterday. The incident took place when the house owner, Gurdeep Kaur, went to her neighbour’s residence. When she returned, she found the main lock broken and household items scattered. She informed the police about the theft. Parminder Singh, SHO of Division No. 6 police station, said they had initiated an investigation into the matter. They were scrutinising the footage of CCTV cameras installed nearby. Baggage scanner machine atrepaired since 2020, motor got damaged due to a short-circuit railway station lies defunct Not Avneet Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 24 A baggage scanner machine installed at the city railway station has been lying defunct, putting the safety of passengers at risk. Despite sporadic operation during its initial six months and occasional use thereafter, the machine, which was installed in 2019, has failed to fulfil its purpose. Sources within the city railway station disclosed that the machine went out of service in 2020. Since then, several attempts were made to repair it, but all proved futile. Railway officials said the machine was repaired last year and operated for sometime in August. However, its motor got damaged due to a short-circuit, rendering it useless again. The scanner machine couldn’t bear the load throughout the day and stops working often. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) informed the department concerned about the glitch in the machine several times. However, nothing has been done so far. Sikh bodies meet Union Minister, raise demands Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 24 A delegation of members of various Sikh organisations of Phagwara today met Union Cabinet Minister Som Parkash at his residence. Members of the Alliance of Sikh Organisations, Bharti Kisan Union, Doaba, and Akal Students Federation met the union minister with a memorandum of their demands. They demanded that the NSA be removed from prisoner Amritpal Singh and his aides who are lodged in the Dibrugarh jail in Assam and all Sikh prisoners be shifted to a jail in Punjab. The Sikh organisations also appealed to the minister to address the demands of Amritpal and other associate Sikh prisoners who had been on hunger strike regarding various issues. They appealed to the minister to take up the issue with the Union Home Minister so that it could be solved at the earliest. They also demanded the release of all Sikh prisoners in keeping with the notification issued by the Central Government during the 550th Parkash Utsav of Guru Nanak Dev in 2019. The organisations also demanded that atrocities on farmers at the Khanauri and Shambhu borders should be stopped and their demands be met at the earliest. Son hatches conspiracy to extort ~5 lakh from man Phagwara, February 24 One of the gangsters, who was arrested on the charge of seeking extortion of ~5 lakh, was the son of the complainant. Stating this, Station House Officer (SHO) Dharminder Kalyan said Sandeep Singh, a resident of Malarri village, hatched a conspiracy to loot his father in collaboration with Vijay Kumar and Ajay. While Vijay and Sandeep had been arrested, Ajay was absconding. They handed over a memorandum to them, urging non-implementation of recently issued coaching guidelines from the Centre, particularly ban on students below 16 years or those still completing secondary education from joining coaching centres. They argued that the age restriction imposed by the Central Government seems illogical and contrary to psychological principles, noting that children learn better in familiar environments. They emphasised that parents voluntarily enrol their children in coaching institutes and the Central Government should respect parental autonomy. The delegation stressed the importance of having a representative from the Coaching Federation in the regulatory body. Minister Harjot Singh Bains, meanwhile, assured them that the guidelines would be implemented with consideration for the welfare of students and parents of children aged below 16. SARABJIT SINGH 2 nabbed with stolen bike Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 24 The Jalandhar rural police arrested two vehicle thieves and recovered a stolen motorcycle from their possession. The suspects were planning to sell the vehicle in Jalandhar. The police said they got a tipoff that Saurabh, alias Soba, a resident of Khurdpur in Adampur, Jalandhar, and Sandeep Kumar, alias Sona, a resident of Khurdpur and presently living in Damunda, stole a motorcycle from Hoshiarpur yesterday. The suspects, who were habitual thieves, were coming to Jalandhar to sell the two-wheeler. After getting information, the police held a naka and apprehended the duo. The police also recovered the stolen motorcycle from their possession. A case under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC was registered against the suspects at the Adampur police station.
