Investigating Officer (IO) Rajinder Pal Singh said suspects were identified as Sunni of Saham village and an accomplice whose identity was yet to be established. Ashok Kumar of Mohalla Palam Vihar told the police that the suspects stole his scooter parked outside his house. A case was registered against the duo. OC NCB team fired at by suspects accused of sending drug to UK Tribune News Service Kapurthala, March 22 A team of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) from Chandigarh faced heavy firing while conducting a raid at Kala Sanghian village here on Wednesday evening while its sleuths had come to nab one Palwinder Pinda, accused of exporting drugs to the UK. The information, however, about the incident came out today. Though 20 to 25 bullets were fired, the NCB team escaped unhurt. But a courier company guy accompanying the team in his own vehicle for Pinda’s identification received a bullet injury on his leg. The NCB team, however, ❝ The NCB team could arrest only Pinda. A hunt is on to nab two others including Iqbal Singh and Kulwinder Singh. Both are on the run. We have recovered the vehicle used by them for escaping from the spot. Investigating Officer (IO) Inspector Sandeep Kaur said the suspects were identified as Major Nilanshu Rangi, posted with 66th Armoured Regiment, Ahmadnagar, Maharashtra, and his mother Sunita Rangi, wife of Bhareeg Yashvir Rangi, a resident of DLF Valley, Panchkula, Haryana. Vipasha Kashyap, a resident of Bhandal Himmat village, complained to the police that her marriage was solemnised with Nilanshu, but she was being harassed for dowry ever since and forced to leave the house. The IO said a case under Sections 406 and 498-A of the IPC was registered against the suspects after a probe and further investigation was in progress. — OC Iqbal Singh Sonu and Kulwinder Singh of Sunranwala village of Kapurthala district were involved in drug trafficking racket. As the NCB team led by Inspector Kuldeep Tomar had gone to Kala Sanghian village, the suspects were reportedly well-prepared with arms and swords. The raid turned out to be a hot chase with the suspects fir- ing gunshots on vehicles of the NCB. Finally, the team managed to overpower Pinda and arrested him while others escaped through fields taking advantage of the darkness. SHO Sanjiv Kapur said the suspect was identified as Sandip Singh, alias Sunni, a resident of Mohalla Preet Nagar, behind Continental Hotel, Nakodar city, who was presently living in Canada, and his unidentified accomplices. The victim reported to the police that on the morning of March 14, he received a phone call. The caller introduced himself as Jaggu Bhagwanpuria from the Kapurthala jail and asked him to arrange Rs 5 lakh within five days. The caller told the victim that he would be shot dead if he failed to give money. The complainant said the caller threatened him daily to extort money. He said other residents had also received such threatening calls from the suspect. The victim’s friends identified the suspect from audio calls as Sandip Singh, alias Sunni, who had been living in Canada for the last five years and his unidentified accomplices, who demanded ransom. They demandedd action against the suspects The SHO said a case under Sections 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 511 (attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the IPC had been registered against Sandeep Singh and other unidentified suspects in this connection. The excise team with stills and material recovered during the special operation to curb illicit liquor trade in Hoshiarpur district. 64 tonnes lahan, 45 litres illicit liquor destroyed Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, March 22 Continuing with the drive to curb the sale of illicit liquor in wake of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, a massive search operation was launched on Friday early morning in the mand area. ETO Sukhwinder Singh said during the drive, 64 tonnes of lahan and 45 litres of illicit liquor were recovered and destroyed on the spot. Search for illicit liquor was conducted in Bhikhowal, Budhobarkat and Terkiana villages falling under the Dasuya excise circle. The drive lasted for six hours in the entire mand area villages along the Beas River. During search, two working stills, eight tarpaulins, eight plastic pipes, five drums, four plastic containers, two silver utensils and three distilling apparatus were recovered by officials from villages. During a meeting with officials of the Department of Food Phagwara manmurdered near Dharamsala after tiff with dhaba owner Our Correspondent Phagwara, March 22 A pall of gloom descended over Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar (Tibbi) here after news of the murder of the resident in Bhagsunag, near Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, was received on Thursday. Navdeep (32) was reportedly beaten to death by some Himachal residents near parking in Bhagsunag after a heated exchange with a dhaba owner and some taxi drivers on Thursday. Navdeep along with his younger brother Harman and his brother-in-law Gagandeep Singh had gone to McLeodganj and after meals at a dhaba, they had a heated exchange with its owner and staff along with some 15 to 20 nearby taxi drivers. Later, taxi drivers attacked him. Navdeep sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital where he was declared brought dead by doctors. The McLeodganj police have registered a case under Sections 302 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code against six persons in this connection. “Further investigation is in progress in the case,” the police said. Navdeep is survived by his wife and son. One arrested with 100 gm of heroin Jalandhar, March 22 A person was arrested here for allegedly possessing 100 gram of heroin, the city police said on Thursday. The arrested person was identified as Kuldeep Kuma of Reru in Jalandhar. Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said a police party was stationed near Transport Nagar when they saw an individual. He said upon noticing the police presence, the individual tried to flee after throwing a polythene from his pocket. Sharma said when the police checked the polythene, they recovered 100 gram of heroin from it. He said an FIR under relevant sections of the NDPS Act was registered against the arrested suspect at the Division No. 8 police station. The Election Commission of India (ECI) shifted Aggarwal to Jalandhar to replace Vishesh Sarangal, who was transferred to Gurdaspur. Aggarwal has also served in Fazilka. After receiving guard of honour from the Punjab Police, Aggarwal held detailed deliberations with officials regarding preparations for the Lok Sabha polls, besides taking an introductory note about the geographical and demographic parameters of the district. Assuring a level playing field for all political parties and candidates for the Lok Sabha polls, the DC said the administration would make 17-year-old boy dies by suicide as exam didn’t go well Jalandhar, March 22 A 17-year-old boy has died by suicide by hanging himself in the washroom of his house at Gadaipur locality on Thursday evening. Victim Jeevan was reportedly upset as his Class XII examination did not go well. Family members said he had gone to washroom, but did not come out. “When we knocked at the door, there was no response. The door latch had to be broken, but it was too late by then. The boy was found lying on the floor with a noose around his neck,” said his father, who works as a labourer and hails from Nepal. Sanjeev Kumar, SHO, Division No. 8 police station, said Jeevan was a Class XII (Arts) student of a government school. He said inquest proceedings had been initiated under Section 174 of the IPC on the basis of the statement of victim’s family. The elderly will also play a big role by doing their bit in the election process. In Jalandhar, there are 343 voters above the age of 100 years and in Nawanshahr their number is 75. As per information, the eldest voter in Nawanshahr is 109 years old. The figures are as per the official record. Persons with disabilities and senior citizens, who cannot move around, can case vote from their residences. Several elderly shared that they had cast their votes through ballot paper when Electoral Commission staff visited their respective homes. “Though I am unable to move, I still have the power to form a government. This makes me feel confident,” said Shanta Rani (90), a resident of A centenarian voter. FILE PHOTO DISCREPANCIES IN DATA Some discrepancies are, however, being observed in data of a few voters. In Jalandhar, two voters were registered under the category of 120 years of age. But, after checking, it was found that none of them fell under the category. In Nawanshahr, members of a family said they were not 100 years old as registered with the administration. Avtar Nagar, who has been bedridden for more than a year. The nonagenarian said despite her health condition, she still had a right to vote.
