TRIBUNE PHOTO: PRADEEP TEWARI Chandigarh, March 26 The UT police prosecuted 109 persons for drunken driving on Holi. A total of 509 persons were challaned for various traffic violations yesterday. Fifteen checkpoints were set up to deter drunken driv- ing, while 20 traffic enforcement checkpoints were laid in the city to curb offences like riding without helmet and rash driving. During the drive, 109 drivers were prosecuted for drunken driving. As many as 156 vehicles were impounded over violations. Nearly 1,000 officials were deployed to curb hooliganism and public drinking, resulting in 13 instances of preventive action and two arrests for drinking in public. — TNS Panchkula: The Panchkula police issued 25 challans for drunken driving on the day of Holi. Police officials said around 100 challans were issued and 25 of these were for the offence of drunken driving. A man was arrested for illegal liquor trade in Rajiv Colony, Sector 17. The suspect was identified as Surjit Singh, alias Ganja, of Sector 17. The police recovered 15 illegal liquor bottles from him. TNS Cong chief, BJP secy get ‘threat calls’ from Pak Panel to assess Chandigarh, March 26 City Congress president HS Lucky and BJP secretary Sanjeev Rana claimed to have received ‘threat calls’ from Pakistan. In a complaint to the UT SSP Lucky said, “I received , two WhatsApp calls from Pakistan number (92332626741) this morning. I picked up the first call and the person on the other side of the line said ‘ Lucky put Bolda nahi, koi na tera ilaaz kar diange’. I did not take the second call.” “Earlier on the day of elections to the posts of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor, I got a call from Pakistan Number (+923274456798) and the caller was asking about the well-being of my son. Kindly take appropriate action against these persons and provide me adequate security at my residence,” he added. In a press statement, Rana said the city police could not find any clue about the unidentified person from Pakistan who threatened him over phone on March 19. “The caller had used abusive language. The SAD today formed an 11-member election committee to decide its candidate, besides appointing Ajit Singh as the committee chairman and chief spokesperson of its Chandigarh unit. Party president Sukhbir Singh Badal made this appointment at the party office in Sector 28 here today. Ajit, who has worked as All India (Local Bodies) Union secretary and state president of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, had retired as superintendent from the city MC. With this announcement, the city is set to witness triangular contest of major political parties —BJP INDIA bloc , (Congress-AAP) and SAD. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
