MC Commissioner Harpreet Singh stated that the MC has been receiving complaints from residents of Chheharta area regarding clogged sewerage and contaminated drinking water. He visited the area along with the entire team of the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) wing comprising SE Sandeep Singh, Executive Engineers Gurjinder Singh, Manjit Singh and other allied staff. The Commissioner himself checked the flow of sewerage and asked to open the manhole covers in his presence. Commissioner Harpreet Singh said many complaints of clogged sewerage and contaminated water supply in Chheharta area were brought to his notice. An activist of the sangh reached the spot and found that a leg of the cow was tied with a rope around cow’s neck. The activist claimed that someone tied the cow, which led to its fall into the canal and death. Activist Rohan Mehra informed the Health Officer of the MC and a team of the MC fished out the body of the cow from the canal. The post-mortem of the cow was conducted. Rohan Mehra appealed to the Punjab Police to quickly search and arrest the culprits. The police lodged a first information report (FIR) in this regard. A separate team has been formed to find the accused. 41K LTR LAHAN SEIZED Amritsar, March 26 District Election Officercum-Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori has issued instructions to officials to keep a constant vigil on liquor dealers in the district in view of the Lok Sabha elections. Addressing a meeting of the district officials here on Tuesday, he said there is a possibility of sale of illegal and counterfeit liquor during the elections, therefore it is necessary that liquor sale businesses are monitored. The Deputy Commissioner said 41,870 litres of illegal lahan and 145 litres of illegal desi daru have been seized during raids conducted by the police at 67 places on Monday. He directed that besides continuous raids, checkpoints and flying teams should keep an eye on the sale of liquor so that wrong elements can be stopped. He said due to the auction of liquor vends in the month of March, there is a possibility of storage of the old stocks and pilferage which should be checked. TRIBUNE PHOTO Amritsar, March 26 The Amritsar Commissionerate Police have busted an International Drug Cartel backed by drug smuggler Gurpreet, alias Gopa, with the arrest of his two associates after recovering 4-kg heroin and ~3 lakh drug money from their possession. This was stated by Commissioner of Police (CP), Amritsar, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar here on Tuesday. Those arrested have been identified as Akashdeep Singh, alias Akash, and Kuljit Singh, alias Gora, both residents of Sarai Amanat Khan in Tarn Taran. Divulging details, Commis- sioner of Police Gurpreet Bhullar said acting on reliable inputs, police teams from Gate Hakima police station led by ADCP Zone-1 Dr Darpan Ahluwalia and ACP Central Surinder Singh managed to arrest both the notorious smugglers. He said preliminary investigations revealed that both accused were directly in touch with smugglers in Pakistan and were regularly receiving drug consignments dropped through drone from across the International Border in Tarn Taran area. The Commissioner of Police said the two accused are close relatives of notorious drug smuggler Gurpreet, alias Gopa, who is wanted in multiple drug cases, including the infamous drug haul of 532 kg of heroin seized at the international check-post at Attari, Amritsar Rural in 2019, which was handled by Ranjeet Singh, alias Cheeta, of Sarai Amanat Khan. The case is now being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has also implicated Gopa’s father Jasbir Singh (on bail) and brother Harpreet, alias Happy (absconding), as co-accused in the 532-kg heroin haul case, he added. — TNS
