Fire breaks out at house on Batala Road Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 5 A fire broke out in the kitchen of a house in Pawan Nagar on Batala Road here today. Household goods, furniture and home appliances were gutted in the incident. The fire brigade of MC and Sewa Samiti volunteers reached along with two fire tenders and doused the flames. Arun Beas, owner of the house, said that the fire broke out at around 1 pm from the chimney of the kitchen, on the first floor. They raised the alarm but the fire spread in all three rooms on the first floor within a few minutes. The doors and windows, wooden furniture, beds and goods lying in the rooms were gutted. A gas cylinder was also lying in the kitchen but luckily it did not catch fire. No injuries were reported. Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 5 With an arrival of 20,585 metric tonnes of wheat crop in the grain markets of the district on Sunday, the total arrival during the season has reached 5.73 lakh metric tonnes. The government agencies procured 20,042 MT while private traders purchased 630 MT on Sunday. Government agencies have procured a total of 5.23 MT of wheat during the season as private buyers’ share is 45,064 MT. Mandi Board officials stated that 99 per cent of the crop which has arrived in the markets has already been procured and only 5,517 MT was left unsold till Sunday evening. Of the total 5.67 lakh MT procurement so far, only 2.65 lakh MT has been lifted from the markets. Mandi Board officials stated that 3.02 lakh MT of procured stocks was still lying in the markets waiting to be lifted. Officials of the district administration stated that efforts are being made to lift the entire procured stocks from the markets at the earliest. They stated that the target was to lift the procured grains within 72 hours of the purchase. The officials stated that nearly 99 per cent of the yield is expected to reach the markets till the end of this week as the crop is fully ripened and harvesting is going on at a fast pace. PHOTO: VISHAL KUMAR Police arrest three in farmer’s murder case The incident turned out to be contract killing PK Jaiswar Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 5 A year after a local farmer, Sukhwinder Singh, of Chak Kamal Khan here was found murdered by the roadside in the village, the Amritsar Rural Police have cracked the case and arrested three persons in this connection. It turned out to be a contract killing fuelled by a land dispute. Those arrested were identified as Arjan Singh and Jagbir Singh of Bhindi Aulakh Khurd village and Balwinder Singh, alias Bindi, of Chak Kamal Khan village. Amritsar (Rural) SSP Satinder Singh said following yearlong technical investigations and gathering human intelligence, the police finally cracked the case. Giving details, the SSP said Balwinder Singh and deceased Sukhwinder Singh shared the boundary of their agricultural fields. He said Balwinder had sold some share of his land to someone for ~10 lakh around seven years ago. He wanted to get his land back but the owner had sold the same to Sukhwinder Singh. ASI Gurnam Singh said the accused were identified as Lal Singh, father-in-law of the victim, Lakhbir Singh (her husband’s brother) and Tarn Taran woman farmer dies at Shambhu border Armanjot Singh Balwinder Kaur Three of family killed in mishap near Mehta Amritsar, May 5 The burning of straw led to a road mishap killing three persons, including a two-anda-half-year-old child, near Khabbe Rajputa village in Mehta here on Saturday. They were going on a bike when an unidentified vehicle hit them on the road filled with dense smoke billowing from a burning field. The police have booked the farmer, identified as Gursewak Singh, along with unidentified persons for burning the straw. They were charged with causing death by negligence. The deceased were identified as Amarjot Singh (35), his grandmother Balbir Kaur and his son Armanjot Singh, all residents of Kotla Suba Singh falling under the Ghuman police station in Gurdaspur. Balwinder Singh, a relative of the victim, told the police that at around 12 noon on Saturday, Amarjot, Balbir Kaur and Armanjot were returning to their native village. When they reached Saidoke village, they got blinded by dense smoke emitting from the fields of Gursewak Singh who had set his fields on fire after harvesting the crop. A truck coming from the opposite side hit their bike and crushed them to death. After the accident, the truck driver sped away. Raids were on to nab Gursewak Singh. — TNS Tarn Taran, May 5 A woman farmer, Balwinder Kaur (55), a resident of Walipur village in Tarn Taran district, died during the farmers’ struggle at Shambhu border on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. She is the 19th farmer who sacrificed her life during the second phase of the Delhi Morcha. Satnam Singh Manochahal, district president of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC), Punjab, said the deceased complained of uneasiness last night and was taken to the Civil Hospital in Rajpura where she breathed her last soon after she was admitted to the hospital. Ex-serviceman Sukhdev Singh said that a soldier gets MC officials inspect garbage dumping site at Bhagtanwala Amritsar, May 5 Officials of the Municipal Corporation visited the garbage dumping site at Bhagtanwala and checked the movement of solid waste management firm’s vehicles deployed for lifting of garbage as well as the process of bio-remediation. A private firm, Averda, lifts garbage from door to door in the city and dumps it at Bhagtanwala on a daily basis. The MC officials claimed that many a time, the movement of these vehicles gets disrupted because fuel is not available. He was in direct contact with Pakistanbased trans-border narcotic smuggler Dogar Rajput. This came to light when cops interrogated him during his remand. Along with Karanbir, the police had arrested Balwinder Singh of Gaggomahal village in Ramdass area. The police had confiscated 3-kg heroin along with 1-kg crystal methamphetamine (crystal meth), popularly known as ICE, a party drug from their occupation. This is the second consignment of heroin and ICE drug in the past couple of days. A day before yesterday, CI wing of Punjab Police had seized 4kg ICE and 1-kg heroin from a drug trafficker.
