During the early hours of Thursday, Pateik was spotted at the Mumbai airport as he left for Cannes. The film premiere will also be attended by Naseeruddin Shah. It will be screened today. Manthan, which starred Naseeruddin Shah and late actress Smita Patil, is the only Indian film to be selected under the Cannes Classic section of the festival this year. The film was inspired by the pioneering milk cooperative movement of Verghese Kurien, who led ‘Operation Flood’ to transform India from a milk-deficient country to the world’s biggest milk producer, and is credited for creating the billion-dollar brand Amul. Manthan was a runaway success when it was released almost 50 years ago and it is a film that is remembered even today. I remember that during the shooting of Manthan, I lived in a hut, learnt how to make cow dung cakes and milk a buffalo. I would carry the buckets and serve the milk to the unit to get the physicality of the character.” — ANI ON’T let her youth befool you. Thirty-something Reema Maya is not only an internationally acclaimed filmmaker, but one who wears many hats. You may see contradiction in her artistic sensibilities steeped in socially relevant shorts and that of king of razzmatazz, Karan Johar. But this medium-agnostic creator, who is helming the digital version of KJo’s Student Of The Year 3, does not feel there is anything to reconcile between his vision and hers. She says, “This is not a new turf for me. I have a long history of creating content like music videos for independent artistes. Besides, I have been in the advertising industry for 10 years.” Moreover, she believes that story should dictate the form. Only like much of her work, Student Of The Year 3.0 is going to be a very per- CLASSIC CUT Rustic flavour sonal story. At one level, the much acclaimed Nocturnal Burger, which created a stir during the world premiere at Sundance Film festival and has since gone on to win 40 awards, too took off from a personal space. She agrees that objectivity in art is an overrated virtue. “The more personal, the more honest you are, greater the universal resonance.” Inspiring journey Do we get to see her inspirational dream journey, which Filmmaker Reema Maya, who is helming the digital version of the Students Of The Year 3, says objectivity in art is an overrated virtue A STILL FROM NOCTURNAL BURGER She gets personal! She, who decided to be a filmmaker at a frightfully young nine years, attended creative workshops between the age of 12-15 and had her own company, Catnip, at 23. As for her humble beginnings, at one point, “I used to be embarrassed about where I came from. But as I am getting older, I am grateful for the experiences.” She navigates multiple realities in Nocturnal Burger with consummate ease. “Perhaps, but then this is my version of realism. In life, there are no clear-cut answers or conclusions. You have to piece everything and present it through your own inferences.” In fact, as she got down to discussing with her co-writer what kind of conversation they want with their young audiences for SOTY, she bared many of the insights she gained at various schools. You bet the fancy schools that you see in KJo movies ‘do exist’. She herself went to one of a kind! Power of cinema Cinema, she realised long back, is a very powerful medium. The reason why she chose to be a filmmaker was not because she was struck by the glamour of it, but, “How it makes you come closest to being another person, offers an immersive experience, can inculcate empathy, hence influence and shape thoughts.” To those who care to tread her path and are struggling to do so, she advises, “Follow your rigour. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga rolled into the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday, returning George Miller’s dystopia-onwheels to the French Riviera festival. The Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy-starrer received a thunderous response at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. The audience gave the highoctane action film a sixminute standing ovation! Taylor-Joy, with her first film in Cannes, brought classical movie-star glamour to one of the most anticipated premieres of the festival. Wearing a cream-coloured custom Dior gown, Taylor-Joy playfully posed for photographers while walking into the Palais des Festivals and offering mock salutes to her director. The latest Mad Max film, starring Chris Hemsworth and c m y b GRETA GERWIG Taylor-Joy as a young Furiosa, premiered in Cannes almost exactly nine years after Mad Max: Fury Road debuted at the French festival. Miller, who has served on the Cannes jury several times, also premiered his Three Thousand Years of Longing in 2022. For the 28-year-old TaylorJoy, Furiosa was a full circle moment. The first time she came to the festival was to receive a Chopard trophy as an emerging actor in 2017. It was presented by the original Furiosa, Charlize Theron, the star of Fury Road. While this year’s Cannes boasts many prominent upcoming premieres, including Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness, with Emma Stone, the Furiosa debut was easily the biggest megawatt Hollywood event of the festival.
