Baljinder Singh, a resident of Mohalla Khurm Pur, Mehat Pur, told the police that an unidentified person kidnapped his wife on March 13 and confined her somewhere. Investigating officer Manjinder Singh said a case under Section 346 of the IPC had been registered. OC DRUG PEDDLER IN POLICE NET Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested a drug peddler on the charge of selling poppy buds. The suspect has been identified as Kulwinder Singh, alias Kinda, a resident of Thooth Garh village falling under the Dharam Kot police station in Moga. Investigating officer (IO) Balvir Chand said 1.800 kg of poppy buds was recovered from his possession. A case under Sections 15-B, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the suspect. The police also impounded a motorcycle on which he was travelling with the contraband. OC WOMAN, SON DIE IN ROAD ACCIDENT Phagwara: The Nakodar Sadar police have booked an unidentified truck driver on the charge of killing a woman and her son. Josef, a resident of Folrri Wal village, told the police that the suspect, who was driving his truck in a rash and negligent manner, hit his car near Shankar village on the Nakodar-Jandiala road on the evening of May 18. As a result, his wife Jareena died on the spot and his son Jorden suffered serious injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries at a clinic. Investigating officer Harjit Singh said a case under Sections 304-A, 279, 337 and 427 of the IPC has been registered against the truck driver. OC WOMAN’S PURSE STOLEN, 2 BOOKED Phagwara: The Mehat Pur police have booked two persons on the charge of stealing cash and jewellery from a woman travelling in a bus. Investigating officer (IO) Davender Singh said the suspects had been identified as Gurpreet Singh and Jagdeep Singh, residents of Charrik village in Moga. Maya Wati, a resident of Mansur Wal Dona village in Kapurthala, told the police that she was travelling in a bus with her relatives on May 19. When the bus reached Adda Mehat Pur, the suspects stole her purse and fled the spot. The purse contained ~5,000 and gold tops. A case under Sections 379 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against the suspects. As the Punjab Congress Campaign Committee was in Jalandhar for a meeting to review the party position on all 13 seats today, some members are learnt to have flagged the problems that they have been still facing on these seats. Since almost all members of the committee are those who have been contenders to the tickets, simmering discontent showed even today when they all met. Former MLA Sham Churasi Pawan Adia is learnt to still sore over a lot of efforts being made for raising the pitch level of candidate Yamini Gomar in Hoshiarpur. Though he as well his wife had been aggressively campaigning for Gomar in Sham Churasi area, he is learnt to continue to keep the grudge of being ignored at the time of her selection. While he was heading towards Kartarpur from Jalandhar, his vehicle crashed into a stationary tipper. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. He was reportedly heading to Kartarpur for canvassing. A case has been registered against the tipper driver under Sections 289, 427 and Phagwara: Two unidentified masked robbers snatched cash worth ~7,500 and two silver kadas from a karyana merchant in the Basant Nagar area on Sunday evening. The victim, Anoop Kumar, a resident of the same locality, told the police that while he was sitting in his shop, two miscreants reached there and pointed sharp weapons at him. They asked him to hand over his belongings to them. The shopkeeper said when he resisted, one of the suspects put a sharp weapon on his neck and snatched cash and silver kadas from him. It was held under the supervision of District Electoral Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal and SSP Surendra Lamba. It was led by SP Manoj Kumar and Deputy Commandant Raghubir Singh of the BSF. The DSP City, Hoshiarpur, DSP, PBI and NDPS, DSP, Special Crime, were also part of the flag march. The accident took place near the Kala Sanghian road around 7:30 am. The deceased has been identified as Ronit, a resident of New Sant Nagar. According to information, Ronit came to his uncle’s shop to give him a tiffin box. Eyewitnesses said while he was returning from his uncle’s shop, his scooter col- Ronit, the deceased lided head-on with the truck. He got crushed under the wheels of the truck and died on the spot. Eyewitnesses apprehended the truck driver and informed the police about the incident. The police reached the spot late. The driver, however, managed to flee the spot while passersby were busy contacting Ronit’s family and arranging for an ambulance. The police tried to take the body into their custody. However, Ronit’s family did not allow the police to remove the body, demanding immediate arrest of the truck driver. The police somehow managed to bring the situation under control and assured the protesters that the suspect would be arrested soon. Tajinder Kumar, brother of the deceased, said when Ronit did not return home till 8:30 am, their mother called him on his mobile phone. A passerby answered the phone call and informed her about the accident. When his family members reached the spot, they found Ronit dead. Bharat Bhushan, SHO from Division No. 5 police station, said a case had been registered against the truck driver under Sections 304 and 229 of the IPC. Ronit’s body was handed over to the family. The police were scrutinising the CCTV footage to identify the truck driver. The residents, who collected around ~80,000, said the main road, which links the city traffic to the GT Road towards PAP Chowk, was in a poor condition for the past 18 months. The police also recovered illegal weapons from their possession. Those arrested have been identified as Deepak Kumar Deepu, Prabhjot Singh, Simrandeep Singh, Amanpreet Singh, Lakhwinder Kumar, Mohit Dhir and Manaav Baaloo, all of them in their 20s.
