As many as seven exit polls available till 9.45 pm predicted that the BJP-led NDA would bag an average of 361 seats (less than PM Modi’s target of ‘400 paar’) and the INDIA bloc 145. The BJP’s aggregate seats as per these polls would be around 311 and that of the Congress 63. If these predictions hold on June 4, the day when the results of the Lok Sabha elections would be declared, the Congress would repeat its 2019 performance with slight improvement. Also, Modi would become the only Prime Minister after late Jawaharlal Nehru to return to office thrice in a row. The BJP had won 303 seats and the Congress 52 in the 2019 elections. The Congress was unable to get the post of leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha for which a party needs 10 per cent of the total seats i.e. 54. If actual results come in line with the exit polls, a Congress leader would be the official leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha. In 2014, the turnout was 70.63 per cent, and in 2019, it was 65.94 per cent. It was a unique election in Punjab with no two parties forging alliance. The Congress, AAP BJP and SAD are , locked in four-cornered contests in many seats whereas the presence of radical leaders in Sangrur, Faridkot and Khadoor Sahib has made contests five-cornered ones. The INDIA bloc — with the Congress contesting nine seats and AAP one — will perform better than the 2019 elections. Overall, the graph of the BJP has come down. In the 2019 LS poll, the BJP had won all 10 seats but this time, the Congress seems to have gained. The India TV-CNX and India Today-Axis My India exit polls showed six to eight seats for the BJP and two to four seat for the Congress. The News 24-Today’s Chanakya gave six seats to the BJP and four seats to the Congress. The India News and Times Now-ETG Survey gave seven seats to the BJP and three to the Congress.
