Talking to the media, Dhillon said maintaining law and order and policing in a professional manner would always be his priority DIG Ranjit Singh Dhillon addresses the media after joining as the Police Commissioner in Amritsar on Monday. Many VVIPs visit the city every day,” Dhillon said. “Our main duty is detection and prevention of the crime. Complaints would be dealt with on priority basis and resolved as early as possible,” said the newly appointed Police Commissioner. “Drug addiction has been a challenge in Punjab, especially in the border belt, but it is more of a social problem and every section of society should come forward to play their role to eradicate the menace. As far as legal action is concerned, the Punjab Police would not leave any stone unturned to check the problem,” Dhillon added. He said necessary steps would be taken to address the problem of traffic congestion in different parts of the city. Saragarhi multi-storey parking languishes for want of facilities Charanjit Singh Teja Tribune News Service Amritsar, June 10 The authorities concerned are neglecting Saragarhi parking, near the Golden Temple, for a long time. A local activist raised shortcomings in the only multistoried parking lot located in the heart of the city. The parking is just 300 metres away from the Golden Temple, where tourists can park their vehicles near the shrine and stroll in Heritage Street. An elevated was constructed from the bus stand to the parking lot at an estimated cost of road Rs 240 crore to provide hassle-free parking space in 2006-07. The government had spent Rs 25 crore on the construction of the parking. A social worker has raised concerns about the poor upkeep, infrastructural issues, management, sani- Saragarhi multi-storey parking near the Golden Temple in Amritsar. There is no arrangements for the fire safety and no CCTV cameras have been installed in the parking. There is a shortage of parking space in the city. It is the only multi-storied parking in the city which provides space for hundreds of vehi- cles. After paying a high price for parking, visitors are not getting basic facilities and are concerned about safety. Washrooms are stinking and no one can use these facilities.” The insanitary conditions c m y b and potholed elevated road also irk visitors. They often complain about it to workers here, but no authority pays heed. “It is the responsibility of the administration to provide parking space to pilgrims on nominal charges. This parking and elevated road has been constructed with Central funds. The state government doesn’t have the right to charge Rs 100 for a car parking. Even if they charge the said amount, then all facilities should be available at the parking,” said Sharma. “Ironically, lifts are lying defunct in the five-storied building. The administration should install lights, and CCTV cameras, ensure cleanliness in washrooms, recarpet elevated road, provide potable water, mantain sanitation and deploy security staff in the parking lot,” said Sharma. Singh Shaloo, also a resident of Sohal village. The ASI said the three suspects were on the run after looting cash and other important documents from one Amarjit Singh, a resident of Bhikhiwind. A police party led by ASI Hari Singh arrested the two suspects while their accomplice managed to escape. Instead, the BJP got a good lead in three out of the five urban Assembly segments in the Lok Sabha polls. The results in Amritsar urban area have been demoralising for the AAP and it is being expected that the party will not take the risk of holding the municipal corportion (MC) elections soon. The term of the elected General House in the MC had ended in January 2023. There was a huge resentment among aspirants for the post of councillors and other public representatives over the delay in holding municipal elections. The vote percentage of AAP suffered more in rural the areas. Even after attaining political power in the state, the AAP leadership failed to strengthen its grassroots cadre in the urban areas. During poll campaign, the AAP only organised roadshows of its star campaigners, but booth-level activity was negligible. Pawan Sharma, a political analyst, said, “AAP had deliberately delayed the MC elections, but this was not in party’s favour. Though the BJP candidate Taranjit Singh Sandhu lost the Lok Sabha elections, the party saw its revival in the urban areas after a long gap. In 2012, the BJP and its alliance partner SAD had 24 councillors each out of 65 in the MC House. But in 2018, the BJP had only six councillors. Talking about the urban Assembly segments, the BJP registered victory in the Central Assembly constituency where it got 35,572 votes while the Congress candidate got only 24,878 votes from here. The BJP got the highest 47,408 votes in the North Assembly constituency. In Amritsar East Assembly constituency, the BJP got 29,635 votes, leading over all other contestants. Even in the West constituency, the BJP had a sizeable vote share and stood second after the Congress. “The Congress got a lead only in the West assembly constituency. The party has its organisational set-up. On the basis of Lok Sabha poll results, we observe that the main competition would be between the BJP and the Congress in the upcoming elections. However, the Congress is also not in a good position. The AAP has to make real good efforts to gain its ground again,” said Kuljeet Singh, a former AAP activist.
