Investigating officer (IO) Jaswinder Singh said the police received a complaint from mining officer Manpreet Singh against unidentified persons for illegal sand mining in Vehran village near the Sutlej. The IO said the police reached the spot and found a JCB machine being used for illegal mining in Chhohle village. The suspect operating the JCB machine fled the spot. A case under Section 21 of the Punjab Mines Act and Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC has been registered. The police impounded the JCB machine and initiated further investigations. OC Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 12 Tragedy struck a family ahead of wedding after a man and his minor son died in a road accident near the Nakodar Chowk here this morning. The mishap took place when they were on their way on a motorcycle to Maqsudan Sabzi Mandi to purchase vegetables for a wedding function at their home. The deceased have been identified as Jasvir Singh (42) and his son Karman Singh (16), residents of Heran village in Nakodar. The incident was captured in the CCTV cameras installed nearby. While trying to overtake a tipper, Jasvir rammed his motorcycle into a pedestrian. As a result, the duo fell on the road and was crushed under the wheels of the tipper. Passersby informed the police about the incident. After getting information, teams from the Sadak Surakhya Force and Bhargo Camp police station reached the spot. The bodies of both of them were crushed in the mishap. Mohinder Singh, brother-in-law of Jasvir Singh, THREE HELD ON ASSAULT CHARGE Phagwara: The Mehat Pur police have arrested three persons on the charges of assault and criminal conspiracy. Investigating officer (IO) Harwinder Singh said the suspects had been identified as Sham Das, Soma and Mukadar, all residents of Shahkot town. Kawaldeep Singh, a resident of Model Town, told the police that the suspects barged into his cycle shop and assaulted him and his brother. A case under Sections 323, 452, 506, 120-B, 148 and 149 of the IPC has been registered against the suspects. Two of their accomplices were arrested earlier. Youth held for raping minor Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 12 The Jalandhar Police Commissionerate has arrested a youth for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl here for three months. The suspect has been identified as Aayush Kumar, a resident of New Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Nagar. The case was registered at the Basti Bawa Khel police station last week. Divulging details, Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said the police registered a case against the suspect under Section 376(2) of the IPC and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Sharma said the suspect was arrested from his residence yesterday. Further investigations were on into the case. He said no criminal background of the suspect had been traced so far. While firefighting efforts were underway at Jyoti Chowk, the Fire Department received a call around 11 am about another outbreak on the fifth floor of GST Bhawan. This fire incident was brought under control after about two hours. It was learnt that a substantial number of records for the entire Punjab were destroyed in the fire. The cause of this fire is also under investigation, but no casualties were reported in either incident. An employee at GST Bhawan informed that he was working as usual when suddenly he felt the smell of something burning. “The employees were quickly moved to safety as the source of the fire was investigated. Police personnel deployed at the office discovered the fire and the entire floor was promptly evacuated,” he said. He further said an alarm was raised and the Fire Brigade arrived at the scene. The first incident was reported at a handloom showroom near Jyoti Chowk, and the second took place on the fifth floor of GST Bhawan. Panic ensued when passersby noticed smoke billowing from the handloom showroom, Amar Sons. The owner was alerted and fire brigade teams arrived shortly thereafter. It took approximately three to four hours to bring the fire under control. A major catastrophe was averted as a bank is located on the floor below the showroom, but before it could spread, it was brought under control. Meanwhile, all the goods in the showroom were burnt to ashes, resulting in losses estimated to be in lakhs. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but short-circuit is
