The deceased was identified as Jagdish Kaur, a resident of Kot Kalan village. The injured, identified as Kulwinder Kaur, was admitted to the Civil Hospital. The truck driver, identified as Raees Khan, a resident of Seekri village, fled from the spot leaving the vehicle behind. The police registered a case under Section 304A of the IPC and impounded the truck. OC ACTIVA SCOOTER, BIKE STOLEN Phagwara: An Activa scooter parked near gurdwara at Bazar Bansanwala here was stolen on Thursday. Malkiat Singh, owner of the scooter, said he went to gurdwara to pay obeisance. When he came out, he found that his scooter was stolen. The police have registered a case. In another incident, a bike bearing registration number PB09P6193 parked outside a showroom in Hargobind Nagar was stolen on Thursday night. OC 1 ARRESTED FOR MURDER ATTEMPT Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested one person on the charge of attempt to murder. Investigating Officer (IO) Buta Ram said the arrested suspect was identified as Jasvir Singh, a resident of Udhowal village falling under the Mehatpur police station. Lovpreet Singh, a resident of Parjian Khurd village, complained to the police that the suspect and his accomplices waylaid him and attacked him with sharp weapons with an intention to kill and seriously injure him on May 24. The IO said a case was registered against the suspect while his six accomplices were absconding. OC CASH, MOBILE PHONES STOLEN Phagwara: A resident of Guru Nanakpura Mohalla, Nakodar, Surinder Kumar, complained to the police that unidentified miscreants barged into his house and decamped with his purse containing Rs 500, two mobile phones and documents. But that’s perhaps the biggest privilege of life that eludes 3,000 residents of Shivaji Nagar in Basti Danishmandan. Their day starts with foul smell emanating from overflowing sewers right outside their houses. The moment the supply of water starts in their locality, sewer water overflows in streets through road gullies. By the time, the supply of the water stops past 9 am, streets are swamped with sewer water making it extremely difficult for resident to venture out of their homes. Thanks to the rising mercury and dry spell, swamped roads dry up around afternoon, except for some algaeridden marshy and slippery patches. But as the evening water supply is restored around 5 pm, drains overflow again portraying the same morning picture. But, a bigger problem after the sunset is that streetlights do not work and hence it becomes risky for residents to pass through slippery sewer water in the darkness. The problem of residents just does not end here. Drinking water that residents get here is also smelly and dis- coloured. “The quality of water is so bad that even filters have failed to purify it. We boil our drinking water three times a day, cool it and then refrigerate so that it becomes fit for consumption,” said Raj Rani, a resident of the locality. Rajya Sabha member Balbir Singh Seechewal said when he saw the video on social media, he immediately contacted the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian embassy in this regard. He said Kulwinder Singh of Gidderpindi village informed the department that illegal excavation of earth at Mandala Chhana village was damaging dhussi bundh and could create a breach in the bundh during the upcoming monsoon season. Kuldeep Singh and Sharanjit Singh, residents of Bharoana village, were indulging in illegal mining without any permission, Kulwinder said. Phagwara, June 14 In response to the recent incidents of theft and robbery in Kapurthala district, believed to be orchestrated by the notorious ‘Kala Kachha’ gang, the police have issued a wanted notice. A reward of Rs 50,000 has been announced for information leading to the gang’s capture. Superintendent of Police (SP) Rupinder Kaur Bhatti confirmed that recent criminal activities indicated the involvement of the gang. She said apprehending the gang could help solve multiple cases of theft and robbery. A recent incident in Phagwara sub-division involved the theft of a Bullet bike and an Activa scooter from a crockery warehouse. The CCTV footage pointed towards the possible involvement of the gang. The police were actively searching for the suspects, the SP said. Bhatti said, “The Kala Kachha gang is suspected of carrying out multiple robberies across the state, including Ambala and Kurukshetra in Haryana. Despite extensive efforts, the police have yet to apprehend the gang, prompting the issuance of the wanted notice.” Jaspreet Singh, DSP Phag, wara, has appealed to the public for assistance, assuring that the identity of anyone providing information about gang would be kept confidential. The DSP reiterated the promise of Rs 50,000 reward for credible information about the gang. The DSP said, “Through the combined effort of police and community support, authorities aim to apprehend the Kala Kachha gang and restore safety and order in the district.” The politics of Bhagats, Ravidasias, Sialkotis Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 14 The community profile of Jalandhar West Assembly segment, which is to go for bypoll on July 10, stands apart from the rest of the city and is significant for all parties as they are in the process of deciding on their respective candidates. There are about 30,000 voters from the Bhagat community, who are Saint Kabir followers and are known to usually vote en bloc, if a party nominates a candidate from the community. There are nearly 35,000 Ravidasias here, most of whom were ancestrally known to be engaged in tannery work. Nearly 50 per cent of the community here are also Siakotis (Pak migrants of 1947), both from the general and the SC castes. It is mostly this community which has AAP likely candidate Mohinder Bhagat; former Jalandhar West MLA Sheetal Angural, who is likely to contest on the BJP ticket; and former Deputy Mayor and probable Congress candidate Surinder Kaur. bigwigs of the likes of Mahajans, Kohlis, Guptas and Mayors who are running sports good export houses from the area. There also are around 400 to 500 Hindu families in the area who moved here from Pakistan in 1960-1980s. The likely Aam Aadmi Party candidate Mohinder Bhagat, who is son of former Punjab minister Bhagat Chunni Lal, is from the Bhagat community. Kabir Jayanti, which is the year’s biggest event for the community, is also slated to fall on June 22 in the peak time for the by-election. There is also some overlapping of communities as Mohinder Bhagat runs a prominent sports good manufacturing company here. BJP’s probable candidate and former MLA Sheetal Angural is from the Sialkoti community. He hails from Basti Danishmandan area, where almost every household is engaged in stitching footballs and rugby balls. The Congress frontrunner is former Deputy Mayor Surinder Kaur, who hails from Jallowal Abadi close to the Buta Mandi area, where families have been engaged in the tannery business for years altogether. The city’s most industrial units, including leather goods manufacturers and sports and surgical complex, also fall in Jalandhar West segment.
