The suspects have been identified as Harash Kumar, a resident of Ahiya Pur village falling under the Tanda police station in Hoshiarpur district, his father Ravinder Kumar and mother Shashi Sondhi. Neelam, a resident of Mohalla Krishna Nagar, Nurmahal, told the Jalandhar (rural) SSP that the suspects were torturing her for dowry ever since her marriage and also used abusive language against her. Investigating officer Varinder Mohan Singh said a case under Sections 406 (breach of trust) and 498-A (torturing woman for dowry) of the IPC had been registered. No arrest had been made so far. OC MAN NABBED ON ASSAULT CHARGE Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested a person on the charges of assault and rioting. Investigating officer Puran Singh said the suspect had been identified as Jaswinder Singh, alias Ekam, a resident of Udho Wal village falling under the Mehat Pur police station. Lovpreet, a resident of Parjian Khurd village, told the police that the suspect assaulted him and his colleagues on January 27. The IO said a case under Sections 323, 324, 325, 326 (voluntarily causing previous hurt), 148 and 149 (rioting) of the IPC had been registered against the suspect and his accomplices. PHOTO: SARABJIT SINGH Migrants, transport office workers clash, 3 injured Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 16 A violent clash erupted between migrants and a few workers of a transport office in the Transport Nagar here this afternoon. According to information, the incident took place when some migrants were assaulting a person near a tea stall close to a transport office of Manjeet Singh. When Manjeet’s workers intervened, the migrants stormed into his office. The incident was captured in CCTV cameras installed nearby. In the CCTV footage, around 10 migrants were seen hurling stones at Manjeet’s office and attacking him as well as his workers. During altercation, the migrants attacked workers with an iron rod, leading to serious injuries to one of them. Two other workers also suffered minor injuries. After getting information about the incident, the police and members of Sikh organisations reached the spot. Phagwara, June 16 The Jalandhar Range police, under the supervision of DIG Harmandir Singh Gill, conducted a cordon and search operation (CASO) here today. It was aimed at curbing drug smuggling in the affected areas of Jalandhar rural, Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur. DIG Gill said the operation involved extensive police resources. He himself visited Ganna village near Phillaur and other locations to boost the morale of police personnel. The aim was to identify, apprehend and dismantle drug smuggling networks. During the CASO, police teams conducted several search and seizure activities in various hotspots known for drug-related activities. The victim had been missing since June 9 evening. The police have arrested one suspect in this connection while two of his accomplices are absconding. An FIR was registered following the statement of victim’s mother Manjit Kaur. Giving details, Durlabh Darshan Singh, investigating officer (IO), said Manjit Kaur told the police that Harpreet started taking drugs after falling into bad company. She said he went out of the house on June 9 evening, but did not return till late night. She said the family members looked for him at relatives’ house and religious places, but did not find any clue about his whereabouts. Yesterday, the victim’s family came to know that Deepu of Gehrimandi village along with his two unknown accomplices had kidnapped Harpreet outside a tavern near the Jandiala Guru grain market. The victim’s mother suspected that either the suspects had kept her son in illegal detention or harmed him. The IO said that after Manjit Kaur’s complaint, the police registered a case under Sections 364 (kidnapping with intention to harm or kill), 365 (abduction with intention to keep in wrongful confinement), 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) and 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code in this connection. The IO said the police raided and arrested Deepu, who confessed that he along with Prince of Gehri Mandi and Kaku of Ekalgadda village, had killed Harpreet and burnt his body near Mallian village canal after wrapping it in a tarpaulin. The IO said the police had recovered the mortal remains (skeleton) from the spot and sent it for an autopsy. — TNS Jalandhar, June 16 With unconfirmed reports of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann shifting to Jalandhar for sometime in light of the upcoming bypoll for the Jalandhar West Assembly segment doing rounds, allottees of three housing schemes Indra Puram Master Gurbanta Singh Enclave, Bibi Bhani Complex and Surya Enclave Extension - have threatened a symbolic protest against the state government. They are demanding the release of their pending dues amounting to ~37 crore as mandated by consumer commissions. The allottees said they had been seeking justice for over a decade. Due to the JIT’s failure to comply with the consumer commission orders and refund the money, interest accumulated and additional judgments favoured the allottees, raising the amount to ~37 crore within a year. He said the allottees would try to meet the CM to seek a resolution for their pending dues. If their efforts failed to yield results, they would hold a symbolic protest against the JIT and the state government.
