Sanjay Pal of Raipur Khurd alleged that Mukul was drunk and driving his car rashly. He hit the police barricades at Sukhna Lake. Expressing apprehensions that allottees may grab the land over the years, they have demanded that the MC should itself carry out plantation on these chunks of land. The incumbent Mayor, Kuldeep Kumar Dhalor is from AAP He was elected may. or under an alliance between AAP and the Congress. The MC has fixed a reserve price of Rs 30,000 per acre per annum for the land in Chahar Taraf Burail and Dadu Majra, Rs 25,000 per acre in Khuda Lahora and Rs 35,000 per acre in Khuda ali Sher for the open auction to be held at the MC office. At Chahar Taraf Burail, 5.75 acre land is available for auction for a total reserve price of Rs 1.72 lakh. Dera Bassi, June 16 Goods worth lakhs were destroyed in a major fire at a paint-manufacturing unit, PRJ Industries, in Morthikri village on the MubarikpurRamgarh road today. No one was injured as the employees working there ran out of the building before the fire went out of control. Workers tried to douse the flames but continued on page 2 All-weather pool project hanging fire Five years on, upgrade of the Sector 39 facility still stuck in files Deepankar Sharda Tribune News Service Chandigarh, June 16 Lingering since 2019, the project to have the city’s second all-weather swimming pool is yet to see the light of day. The UT Sports Department had planned to convert the existing swimming pool in Sector 39 into an all-weather facility, but the project is still stuck in files shuttling between the engineering and sports departments. After inauguration in November 2019 by then UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore, the authorities had announced that the pool would be converted into an all-weather facility. The same year, then Secretary, Sports, KK Yadav said process to upgrade the facility had started. As per the initial plan, the department was to set up a compatible plant at the pool that could be easy to repair and clean. The city, which has 11 swimming pools under the Sports Department, has only one all-weather facility at the Sector 23 complex. It has an approximate length of 25 m. “The department is working on this project. The file (project to convert the facility into an all-weather facility) is still under consideration. Recently, it was held back by the senior officials to re-discuss the budget. However, the official confirmation is still to be made public. If the department wishes to upgrade the facility, then the approvals should be come in the next few weeks,” said a senior official. Built at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore, the Sector 39 complex is spread over 1.65 acres. It houses a 25m indoor pool, a multi-purpose hall (which now hosts a table tennis facility) and a yoga centre. An open basketball court and a volleyball court were also proposed to be set up at the site. c m y b BJP councillor Kuljeet Singh has written to UT Administrator Bawarilal Purohit, demanding that the matter be investigated as this is a “brazen attempt to usurp land by AAP and the Congress”. BJP councillors had walked out of the House well before the agenda was tabled. Kuljit said, “People with vested interests take over government properties and then it becomes difficult for the authorities to get it vacated. There are numerous other properties of the MC, which are still under illegal occupation as court cases are going on.” “These village lands are to be developed by the government as per the Chandigarh Master Plan 2031. Such nefarious designs by the AAP-Congress Mayor and the alliance councillors would impede the development of these villages,” added Kuljeet, who is a former Sarpanch of Dhanas. PHOTO: PRADEEP TEWARI Expect respite from heat, rain likely from tomorrow Tribune News Service Chandigarh, June 16 Relief from the scorching heat is likely soon as the Met Department has predicted light to moderate rain in the tricity from June 18 to 21. However, heatwave conditions are likely to persist until then. According to the forecast, dry weather is likely to continue in Chandigarh during the next 48 hours. Light to moderate rain is expected at isolated places on June 18 and at a few places from June 19 to 21 in the city. The rain spell is likely to be accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning or gusty winds (speed 30-40 km ph) at isolated places in the tricity from June 18 to 20. “Punjab and Haryana are witnessing maximum temperatures of 45°-46° Celsius. Maximum temperatures in the northern region, including Chandigarh, is hovering at 44°-45°Celsius. No large change in the maximum temperature is likely during the next three days. After that the temperature will fall by around 3° Celsius,” said a Met Department official. “Temperatures in Chandi- garh are expected to range from 44°C to 46°C. This will lead to the continuation of the prevailing heatwave conditions over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh from June 16 to18. Warm night conditions are likely at isolated places in the tricity during next two days,” he added. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature today was 44.4°C, which is eight degrees above normal. The minimum temperature was five degrees above normal at 31.3°C. The maximum temperature is expected to drop to 41°C by June 21.
