One person died on the spot while another suffered serious injuries in the accident. He was admitted to DMC hospital. Hearing the screams, people gathered at the spot and caught the truck driver who was reportedly drunk. Later, he was handed over to the police. According to information, the truck loaded with scrap was going towards the Jalandhar bypass from the Hambran road. Though the driver applied brakes of the truck, it ran over two victims sleeping on the footpath. The deceased was identified as Mukesh while the injured was identified a Manoj Kumar. Both are natives of Madhya Pradesh. Sub-Inspector Ashwani Kumar, investigating officer (IO), said the matter was being investigated. He said footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the area was being checked. Required action would be taken against the errant driver, the IO added. The body of the deceased was kept at the Civil Hospital’s mortuary as his family members were yet to arrive from Madhya Pradesh, the IO said. 3 held with 345 gm heroin, drug money Tribune News Service Ludhiana, June 22 A drug smuggler tried to run his car over cops manning a naka on a road in Machhiwara. Fortunately, policemen saved their lives by jumping away from the road. After the incident, a police party chased the car and managed to nab its driver. During checking of the car, five grams of intoxicating powder was recovered from the vehicle. The arrested suspect was identified as Raman Kumar, a resident of Guru Colony, Machhiwara. As per available information, Sub- inspector Tara Ram along with a police party was conducting a routine checking on the Ropar road under Operation Eagle 4 on Friday. TRIBUNE PHOTO Ludhiana, June 22 The police today claimed to have nabbed three drug smugglers and recovered 345 grams of heroin and Rs 22,000 drug money from their possession. The nabbed suspects were identified as Shubham, alias Golu, a resident of Punjabi Bagh, from whom 110 grams of heroin and Rs 12,000 drug money was recovered; Varinder Singh, alias Bindi, a resident of Malerkotla, from whom 70 grams of heroin and Rs 5,800 drug money was recovered; and Amrik Singh, a resident of Khanna, from whom 165 grams of heroin and Rs 4,200 drug money was recovered. In a statement, Amandeep Singh Brar, Additional DCP (Crime) stated that a case under the NDPS Act was registered against the suspects at the Focal Point police station and further investigation launched to find their backward and forward links so that big drug suppliers could be arrested. Sources in the Police Department said the police had identified some big heroin suppliers with whom the three arrested suspects were in touch. The sources said a probe was launched to arrest suppliers. — TNS 7 booked for duping resident of ~4.35 cr Tribune News Service Ludhiana, June 22 The Cyber Cell police station yesterday registered a case against seven persons, who duped a city resident of Rs 4.35 crore, on the pretext of investment in a plan. The booked suspects were identified as Tanvi Sharma, Mander Power, Shivani, Jyoti Sharma, Sharan Gupta, Bikram Patel and Anjali Sharma. Complainant Rashpal Singh, a resident of Model Town, told the police that he was contacted by one Tanvi Sharma who assured that she had some good investment plans in which he would get multiple returns on invested money. The suspect added the victim’s cellphone number in a WhatsApp group in which she revealed some investment plans. The suspects took Rs 4.35 crore from the victim on the pretext of investing the amount in a scheme. However, the victim didn’t get any return. Instead, his principal amount was also not returned by the suspects, following which he lodged a police complaint. Investigating officer ASI Jasvir Singh said after registering a case further investigation was launched and efforts were on to arrest the suspects. c m y b 2 murder bid suspects nabbed after gunfight Tribune News Service Ludhiana, June 22 Exchange of fire took place between the police and suspects wanted in an attempt to murder case in the wee hours of Saturday. Two wanted suspects suffered bullet injuries on their legs and were admitted to the Civil Hospital for treatment. The two suspects first fired at cops who retaliated in their defence leaving the duo injured. Cops had a narrow escape when a bullet hit their vehicle. Amandeep Singh Brar, Additional DCP (Crime), said the Haibowal police had received a tip-off that two suspects identified as Rajinder, alias Dega, of Basant Nagar, and Satinder, alias Happy, of Haidar Enclave, wanted in an attempt to murder case were hiding at Ram Enclave in Haibowal. When cops raided the place, the suspects started changing their locations after seeing the police party. The cops surrounded the suspects and asked them to surrender, but they opened fire on the police. A case of attempt to murder and other sections of the IPC was registered against the suspects on Saturday. Brar said both the suspects had a notorious past. Satinder Singh was facing eight cases that included an attempt to murder and the Arms Act, said Brar. Ravinder Singh was facing two cases, including one of gang rape, registered against him in the past, Brar added. Brar said on the intervening night of June17-18, both the suspects along with their four accomplices had attacked one Sahil Kanda at Chandar Nagar. The suspects had also hurled bricks at the victim’s house and damaged vehicles in the area. Youth booked on charge of raping 13-year-old girl Tribune News Service Ludhiana, June 22 A youth, who raped a 13year-old girl for six months, has been booked by the police. Yesterday, after receiving a complaint, the Jodhewal police registered a case against youth. The booked suspect was identified as Rustam, a native of Bihar, now resident of Janta Colony in the city. In her complaint, the victim’s mother stated to the police that on Friday, her daughter told her that she had friendship with the suspect, who lived in their neighborhood, for the past six months. Suspect Rustam had been visiting victim’s house to develop sexual relations with her. The complainant told the police that the suspect had been sexually exploiting her daughter on the pretext that he would marry her. The complainant said when her daughter refused to compromise, the suspect threatened her of dire consequences. Yesterday, after the complainant came to know about sexual exploitation of her daughter by the suspect, she lodged a police complaint against him. Meanwhile, the suspect has absconded.
