Station House Officer (SHO) Aman Saini said the suspects had been identified as Inderjit Kaur, a resident of Parjian Khurd village, her sons Tirath Ram and Sarabjit, alias Saabi, and Sukhjit Singh a resident of the same village. The SHO said the suspects murdered Lakhvir Singh, a resident of Parjian Khurd village. Jaswinder Kaur, a resident of Parjian Khurd village, told the police that Inderjit Kaur and Sukhjit Singh used abusive language against her father-in-law Lakhvir Singh on the morning of June 30. They instigated Tirath Ram and Sarabjit to attack him with weapons. The complainant said a land dispute was the reason behind the attack on her father-in-law. A case has been registered against the suspects. Raids are being conducted to nab the suspects. OC MAN TAKES WRONG MEDICINE, DIES Phagwara: A Shahkot resident died after consuming wrong medicine. Investigating officer Sulinder Singh said the deceased had been identified as Gurpal Singh, a resident of Bhirra Bazar, Shahkot. Mandeep Kaur told the police that her husband consumed wrong medicine by mistake and died. The police handed over the body to the family after the post-mortem examination. PHOTO: SARABJIT SINGH Tribune News Service Jalandhar, July 2 A large number of assistant professors and librarians, under the banner of the 1,158 Assistant Professors and Librarians Front, Punjab, (Government College), staged a protest at the BMC Chowk here today. Holding placards and banners, the protesters demanded fair recruitment practices. The police were deployed to manage the crowd and maintain law and order. The protesters were allocated a designated space at a corner of the chowk where they peacefully staged their sit-in. One of the protesters said the High Court had cancelled the recruitment process for assistant pro- fessors and librarians in government colleges. “The government did not follow up the case properly in the court. After the court’s decision, there was no supportive statement from the state government for the affected candidates,” he said. After a fruitless meeting with Education Minister Harjot Bains, members of the front said they organised a sit-in at his village, Gambhirpur (Sri Anandpur Sahib), last year. Chiefs of all three main parties - Congress, AAP and the BJP - were in the city today. While Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann took out two roadshows in the Jalandhar West area - one in Dilbagh Nagar and another in Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Nagar, minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian and Pawan Tinu also campaigned for their candidate Mohinder Bhagat. PPCC chief Amarinder S Raja Warring, his wife Amrita Warring, Jalandhar MP Charanjit S Channi, MLAs Sukhwinder Kotli and Pargat Singh, ex-ministers Dr Raj Kumar Verka and Bharat Bhushan Ashu and former PYC chief Amarpreet Lally campaigned for Congress candidate Surinder Kaur. The BJP camp also remained active with BJP state chief Sunil Jakhar holding back-to-back four meetings in various localities of Jalandhar West. I will be running my government here for three days a week.” Jalandhar, July 2 The Jalandhar Police Commissionerate claimed to have busted two interstate gangs involved in smuggling of drugs with the arrest of four persons, and recovered 1.5 kg opium and 100 gm heroin from their possession. Divulging details, Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said following a tip-off, the police laid a checkpoint near the service road at Barring Gate, Hayden Park. The police saw two persons coming on foot from the Phagwara side. “On suspicion, the police stopped them for checking. During frisking, the police recovered 1.5 kg opium from them,” he said. Swinging into action, the police arrested the suspects identified as Varinder Dagi and Ravi Kumar, both residents of Chatra district, Jharkhand. A case under Sections 20, 61 and 85 of NDPS Act has been registered against the suspects at the Cantonment police station. Sharma said during investigation, Ravi confessed that he started smuggling opium due to poor financial condition. It also came to fore that Varinder went to Mumbai in 2001 and started driving an auto-rickshaw. In 2018, he returned to his hometown due to illness and started smuggling opium. He said during investi- gation, it came to fore that Meva Singh was unemployed. To earn money, he started smuggling heroin. Gurpreet said he was currently working as a labourer and had little income. He started smuggling heroin to make both ends meet. The Police Commissioner said the duo had a criminal past as a case was already pending against Meva Singh, while two FIRs were already registered against Gurpreet. Further investigations were on into the case.
