There are only 12 machines for covering the entire city. Residents from various areas have sought from the Municipal Corporation to conduct fogging two times a day for the prevention of vector-borne diseases. Meena, a resident of the Jassian Road area, said no fogging had been done in the area and she could see mosquitoes in vacant plots. “The rainy season has started and fogging should also be done twice a day but generally it is seen that the department concerned wakes up only after several cases are reported,” she said. “I haven’t seen fogging being done in our area, not Some residents have claimed that no fogging conducted in their areas this rainy season. PHOTO: ASHWANI DHIMAN Major fire at store on Satsang Road Tribune News Service Ludhiana, July 6 A major fire incident occurred at a bag store in the Civil Lines on Satsang Road here early this morning. Though the exact cause of the fire was not ascertained so far, short-circuit was suspected to be the possible reason. As per information, residents of the area after noticing the fire informed the fire control room. The fire had started from the ground floor and then spread further to the first floor of the store. After getting information, firemen reached the scene. Since the store was locked, fire personnel started the operation after some time. When the store owner came and tried to open the shutter, he failed to do so as it got jammed due to heat. The fire-fighters then left with no option than to break the shutter. They took two hours to douse the flames. Fire officials said fortunately the store was locked and there was nobody inside when the fire occurred due to which no injury or casualty reported. The incident had also panicked owners of nearby shops. Meanwhile, another fire incident reported at a hosiery unit in Bajwa Nagar on Friday night. Fire personnel had doused the flames after over two-hour-long struggle. Ludhiana, July 6 A maid employed by a lecturer at his house at Sukhmani Enclave here recently committed a major theft and fled with Rs 3 lakh in cash and gold ornaments worth several lakhs. On the complaint of the victim, Suraj Parkash, a case was yesterday registered against the maid, identified as Shain, a resident of Moradabad, UP . Suraj Prakash told the police that he had hired Shain for domestic work 15 days ago. On June 26, he along with his family had gone out of station and on June 29 when they returned home, the maid was not present inside the house. He was shocked to see that the entire house was lying ransacked and cash and gold ornaments kept in a cupboard was missing. ASI Rajpal Singh of the Sarabha Nagar police station said the police registered a case against Shain on the complaint of Suraj Prakash. Tribune News Service Ludhiana, July 6 With an aim to get child beggars off streets and to help them with mainstream education and vocational skills, the district administration on Saturday initiated “Bhikhya ton Sikhya Tak” programme in the district. Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney held a meeting with members of NGOs and officials of government departments to discuss the programme. The aim was to chalk out a road map to resolve the issue of child begging, get those children off streets and to educate them or enhance their vocational skills/ talent. Members of different NGOs, including Jeet Foundation, Initiators of Change, Switch for Change, Helping Hands and City Needs, among others, participated in the meeting. The district police have already forfeited the illegally acquired properties by the 15 drug lords valued over Rs 7.25 crore. However, one case with a proposal to forfeit property worth Rs 1.4 crore has been rejected by the competent authority for technical reasons. The forfeiture of the illegally acquired properties by the drug lords was done under the provisions of the Chapter V-A under Section 68-F of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He died due to serious injuries in front of his son who was also accompanying him. The deceased was identified as Mukhtiyar Singh, a resident of Hissowal village. Manjeet Singh, a resident of Hissowal, told the police that on July 4, he, along with his father, had come to Mandi Mullanpur for some work and after finishing the same, they were walking towards home. When they reached near New Dana Mandi on the Raikot road, a speeding car hit his father from the rear. His father suffered serious head injuries in the accident. He took the victim to a nearby hospital with the help of passers-by. Doctors after giving first aid treatment, shifted his father to some other hospital in Ludhiana due to the critical condition of his father, where during treatment he breathed his last. The police yesterday registered a case against the unidentified car driver at the Dakha police station and started further investigation. Investigating officer ASI Kuldeep Singh said CCTV cameras in the area and nearby places were being scanned to get any clue about the errant car driver.
