In his latest notorious act, he allegedly sent his men for opening fire at the house of his opponent Navi at Karnail Singh Nagar in Dugri. The video of opening fire at the house has also gone viral on social media on Tuesday. However, he is already playing hide-andseek with the Police Department for a long time, A day after the firing occurred on July 7 night, the gangster claimed the responsibility for the attack by posting a message on social media. Though the police have not received any official complaint from the family of Navi, a probe has been initiated in the case. Notably, on April 7 this year, after a group of men, identified as Sagar Newton, Monu Dedhi, Shubham, Rajeev, Kuldeep Singh, Ankit and Monu Dwark, had barged into the house of Navi in Sha- heed Bhagat Singh Nagar and attacked his family, including his 80-year-old grandmother Surjeet Kaur, the elderly woman succumbed to her injuries on May 27. Initially, a case of attempt to murder was registered by the police but after the death, murder charge was added to the FIR. On June 22, Newton’s wife Vanshika was arrested by the police in the case as the police claimed she was part of the conspiracy and the suspect also gave shelter to her husband. Notably, the gangster is quite active on social media where he frequently posts his personal videos with songs, glorifying gangsters and weapons. He also posted videos of himself firing in the air. On October 4, 2023, Newton had made a video call from the jail and talked to his family and residents of the area on a projector and told them that he would soon come out of the jail to meet them. Notably, the gangster is facing over 12 cases, including murder, attempt to murder and arms smuggling. He was also found involved in weapon smuggling while lodged in the jail and his men were also arrested by the police with illegal weapons. I have no connection with my family now, stop bothering them, else, you will have to face the consequences.” DC meets farmer leaders over Ladhowal barrier row Ludhiana, July 9 Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sakshi Sawhney today held a meeting with farmer unions over the ongoing issue of Ladhowal toll barrier, which had been made “toll-free” by them for commuters. Ludhiana ADC Major Amit Sareen was among other officials who attended the meeting. Dilbagh Singh, Punjab president of the Bharatiya Kisan Mazdoor Union, along with other farmer leaders, attended the meeting. Dilbag Singh said: “It was the initiative of the Deputy Commissioner as she called the meeting to listen to our demands. A two-hour discussion was held and a fresh memorandum was also submitted to the DC.” “We are firm on our demands and will not take back any of them. We want fulfilment of all our demands, which are for the welfare of the people. Another round of meeting was called on Thursday,” he said. Dilbag asserted that unions were clear on their demands that include Rs 150 toll fee, Farmer leaders after meeting the DC in Ludhiana. They allow buses and big vehicles to pass the barrier by taking bribe and without charging money on record. About the hearing in the high court on the petition filed by the NHAI, the leaders said unions had hired a lawyer in the high court who would fight for the farmers. ADC Major Amit Sareen said on the demands of the farmers regarding issues such as poor upkeep of underpasses, lack of cleanliness in public washrooms and broken roads, directions were issued to the officials concerned and to discuss other demands, a fresh meeting will be held with farmers on Thursday and hopefully, an amicable solution will be found. — TNS 3 held with 510 gm Civic body team acts against CM window set to resolve grievances of heroin, mobiles eight illegal structures in city Tribune News Service Ludhiana, July 9 The Ludhiana police yesterday arrested three persons and seized 510 gm of heroin, four mobile phones and a Hyundai i20 car from them. The suspects have been identified as Akashdeep Singh (24) of Ladian Kalan, Rahul Mattu, alias Gopi (28), of Ludhiana and Rohit Singh (19) of Tarn Taran. A case under the NDPS Act was registered against them on Monday. ADCP (Crime) Amandeep Singh Brar said acting on a tip-off, the CIA team laid a trap and after intercepting the i20 car, three suspects were arrested and 510 gm of heroin was seized from them. He said the suspects were on the way to deliver heroin to their clients. “Now, the police will conduct further questioning of the smugglers so that their links can be verified and big suppliers be nabbed. The police would also probe about properties made by the suspects with the proceeds of drug money and the same would be attached,” Brar said. Meanwhile, the police nabbed two persons and seized 278 gm of heroin and Rs 10,000 drug money from their possession in another incident. The duo are identified as Gurdeep Singh (47) and Rajinder Kaur (39), both residents of Lohara. A case has been registered against them. Ludhiana, July 9 Continuing the drive against illegal constructions, the Municipal Corporation (MC) took action against eight illegal buildings in the Sherpur area and Chandigarh road on Tuesday. Working on the directions of Deputy Commissioner (DC)-cum-Municipal Corporation (MC) Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney, the drive against illegal constructions was conducted by the building branch of the MC Zone B. During the drive, MC teams, led by Assistant Town Planner (ATP) Harvinder Singh Honey, sealed two illegal labour quarter buildings and four shops in the Sherpur area. Meanwhile, Sawhney said strict directions had been issued to staff of the building branch to keep a regular check and take stern action against illegal constructions. — TNS ~3.89-cr fine slapped on 72K traffic violators Wrong parking, use of fake number plate, driving without helmet among major offences Tribune News Service Ludhiana, July 9 Cracking the whip against traffic violators, the Ludhiana Police Commissionerate have challaned over 72,000 offenders and slapped a fine of around Rs 3.89 crore on them during the past six months, officials said. However, the number of challans issued and also the amount of fine imposed on the violators this year was heading south as compared to last year, official figures have revealed. Commissioner of Police (CP) Kuldeep Singh Chahal told The Tribune here on Tuesday that the Commissionerate Police have been undertaking a special drive against traffic violators, besides spreading awareness about traffic rules with an aim to make roads safer. The official data compiled by the Commissionerate Traffic Police, a copy of which is with The Tribune, showed that as many as 72,231 traffic violators were A cop issues a challan to a violator in Ludhiana. Besides, 1,541 vehicles of habitual traffic offenders were also impounded during this period. The offence-wise breakup of the traffic challans issued this year indicated that driving without helmet topped the chart with the maximum of 15,017 challans issued, followed by 13,897 for wrong parking, 6,334 for wrong side driving, 5,452 for using unauthorised number plate, 3,970 for driving without seat belt, 3,580 for driving without driving licence, 2,686 for triple riding, 1,582 for using mobile phone while driving and 1,208 vehicle drivers were challaned for jumping the red light. Comparatively, 1,11,496 traffic violators were challaned and a fine of Rs 7,03,73,700 was slapped on them during the corresponding period last year. Besides, 1,524 vehicles of the habitual traffic offenders were also impounded between January c m y b 1 and June 30, 2023. Earlier, as many as 60,725 traffic violators were challaned and a fine amounting to Rs 3,97,51,450 was slapped on them for violating various traffic rules during the corresponding period in 2022, 97,642 traffic violators were challaned and a fine of Rs 8,91,61,700 was slapped on them in 2021, a fine of Rs 7,20,47,780 was slapped on 1,48,356 traffic violators in 2020, and 1,96,467 traffic violators were challaned on whom a fine of Rs 7,22,81,149 was imposed in 2019. Exhorting commuters to obey traffic rules, the CP said it not only ensures the safety on roads but also averts unnecessary litigation and financial burden that occurs after being caught. He said the Commissionerate Police had been holding traffic awareness and education camps in different parts of the city, which had the highest density of vehicles and traffic on the roads, to ensure safe roads. Sakshi Sawhney said a person had to go to the CM window desk with their complaint and after registering the complaint at the window portal, it would be forwarded to the department/ nodal officer concerned. The complainant would receive a message on the mobile number regarding his or her issue. The nodal officer in the department concerned would ensure speedy redressal of the matter by addressing the same on a priority basis. Sakshi mentioned that all nodal officers would be brought on a common platform for quick redressal of grievances. It would also help in exchange of information which would result in quick redressal. She added that a mechanism had been evolved to monitor each and every complaint, thus ensuring proper transparency.
