Today, the MC House again passed a resolution for providing 20,000 litres of water free to each household and free parking in lots under the civic body. The decision, backed by MP Manish Tewari as well as councillors of various parties, challenges the UT Administrator Banwarilal Purohit’s recent rejection of these proposals. Tewari argued against the rejection, citing procedural violations and emphasising the MC’s right to autonomy under the Municipal Corporation Act. When the agenda was passed in March, he was not the city MP He read in the . newspaper that the UT Administration had rejected the resolutions by evoking powers under Section 423 of the MC Act, which states that the government may annul an illegal proceeding passed by the House. Chandigarh, July 9 The CBI today laid a trap at the Sector 26 police station after a graft complaint but the prime accused, ASI Vijender Singh, escaped and was later found dead in his car. It is suspected that he died by suicide. The CBI had received a complaint that Vijender was demanding a bribe to favour an accused in an attempt-tomurder case registered in March at the police station. According to sources, the accused’s sister had approached the CBI, alleging that Vijender was demanding Rs 40,000 to favour her brother in the case. Her brother and another person were booked for stabbing a person at the Grain Market, Sector 26. After negotiations, the bribe amount was reduced to Rs 20,000, she said. Today, the complainant visited the Sector 26 police station to deliver money. Sources reported that Vijender allegedly asked her to place the money in a file and he left the room immediately. Before leaving, Vijender instructed ASI Satish to keep the file. The CBI officers detained Satish. A search was conducted at the house of the accused. In the evening, the other ASI died allegedly after consuming some poisonous substance. He was found lying unconscious in his car parked near the road separating Sectors 40 and 41. The police were informed and he was rushed to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, where he was declared dead on arrival. He has been identified as Puneet Arora. A group of youths carrying sharp weapons, led by Puneet, had attacked Ankur Panwar leaving him seriously injured. Ankur’s accomplice had fired two shots in retaliation. Puneet, accompanied by around 12 armed assailants, had arrived at the spot in two cars and a motorcycle. They fled the scene when Ankur’s accomplice opened fire. The police said efforts were being made to identify the other suspects who were accompanying Puneet. Ankur and his four friends were arrested on Monday night. The countrymade pistol used in the crime was also recovered by the police. Chandigarh, July 9 The House meeting was called off abruptly amid arguments between councillors of AAP and the BJP over remarks made about Anil Masih, a nominated councillor, who had tampered with votes during the mayor’s election. A discussion was going on to declare the city a “7 star garbage-free city” but it took a turn when Anil Masih, attending the House for the first time since the mayoral elections, offered suggestions on cleanliness in the city. AAP councillor Manaur interrupted Masih, questioning his credibility by mentioning statements allegedly made by Masih in the Supreme Court regarding his mental fitness. The remarks sparked immediate opposition from BJP councillors, who condemned it as a personal attack and demanded an apology from Manaur. AAP councillors, however, Marshals try to remove BJP councillors from meeting. The court noted that all invalidated eight ballots, which were tampered with during the counting, had votes cast in favour of AAP mayoral candidate Kuldeep Kumar. Chandigarh, July 9 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former UT Mayor Pardeep Chhabra (65) passed away today after a prolonged illness. He quit the Congress to join AAP in August 2021 before the Municipal Corporation (MC) elections The AAP leader had been undergoing treatment for jaundice. He breathed is last this morning. He is survived by his wife, son and two daughters. Chhabra was the AAP co-in charge for Chandigarh. He was also the chairman of the Punjab Large Industrial Development Board. He was instrumental in debutant AAP’s good show in the Municipal Corporation elections in December 2021. The party emerged the single-largest party. Several of the winning councillors were his close associates and had dumped the Congress to join AAP before the elections. The police had registered the case under Sections 376 (3) of the IPC and 6 of the POCSO Act at the Sector 34 police station on a complaint filed by the victim. She told the police that the accused, who happened to be her cousin, had developed sexual relationship with her. She went to the hospital along with her mother as she was suffering from frequent vomiting. At the hospital, she came to know that she was nine weeks pregnant. During the course of investigation, the accused was arrested. The counsel of the accused claimed that he was falsely implicated in the case. The Public Prosecutor claimed that the prosecution had proved the case. After hearing the arguments, the court sentenced the accused to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. Tribune News Service Chandigarh, July 9 The UT police have arrested the suspended vice-principal of a government school for allegedly sexually harassing a teacher. The accused was suspended by the Education Department in June after allegations were levelled against him. The police arrested the accused on July 7 and produced him in the court next day. The court sent him to judicial custody. A computer instructor at a government school had alleged that the accused had tried to touch her without her consent and engaged in objectionable talks with her. As per the allegations, the c m y b accused had also tried to convince the complainant to come to his place in the absence of his family. It was alleged that this had happened during the ongoing summer vacation when the vice-principal was in charge in the absence of the school principal. The Education Department had last month also constituted a four-member fact-finding committee under the chairmanship of the District Education Officer (DEO) to probe the matter.
