Investigating officer (IO) Ashwani Kumar said the suspect had been identified as Prabhjot Singh, a resident of Sirhand. Jaswinder Pal, a resident of Khokhe Wal village, told the police that the suspect stole two air coolers, a cauldron among other items from a church on the Khokhe Wal-Talwann road. A case under Sections 331(4), 305 and 317(2) of the BNS has been registered against the suspect. The police also recovered stolen items from his possession. OC VILLAGER NABBED FOR MURDER BID Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested a person for attempt to murder. Investigating officer (IO) Buta Ram said the suspect had been identified as Vishal, alias Shalu, a resident of Akbar Pur Kalan village. The IO said a case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323, 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (committing crime with common intention) of the IPC was registered against the suspect and others. OC ILLICIT LIQUOR SEIZED, 1 HELD Phagwara: The Mehat Pur police have arrested a person on the charge of selling illicit country-made liquor. The suspect has been identified as Daleep Singh, a resident of Baghela village. Investigating officer (IO) Harwinder Singh said eight bottles of illicit liquor were recovered from his possession. A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Punjab Excise Act has been registered. OC YOUTH DIES BY SUICIDE Phagwara: An unidentified youth reportedly died by suicide by hanging himself from the grill of a railway bridge at the Phagwara railway station in the wee hours on Friday. The Government Railway Police (GRP) have kept the body in the mortuary of the Civil Hospital for identification. The reason behind him taking the extreme step was not known yet. District Election Officercum-Deputy Commissioner Dr Himanshu Agarwal said during the recently held Lok Sabha elections, some green booths were set up by the administration in the Phillaur Vidhan Sabha constituency. But this time all 181 booths in the entire Jalandhar West constituency were turned into green booths for voting. An estimated 50,000 saplings were distributed to the voters on the day of the polling. Jalandhar, July 12 Though AAP workers and leaders are quite optimistic of winning the Jalandhar West bypoll, the results of which will be declared tomorrow, the party is not going much gaga over it. As many as 15 candidates are in the fray from the seat with Mohinder Bhagat, who has been unlucky in the BJP twice in 2017 and 2022, counting on his luck from the AAP ticket. Some party leaders said arrangements for a bash had been made at a resort, but no invitations had been sent across. Party workers, however, have been asked to gather outside the counting centre at Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women after the result would start trickling in party’s favour. Since the vote percentage was down and just about 94,500 people had cast their votes, leaders are wary that there could be a slip too. Most ground workers, including the recently joined bunch of councillors such as Jagdish Samrai, Harjinder Ladda and Tasem Lakhotra, have been confident of giving a lead for the party in their respective areas. “Our calculations say that we will be up with a margin of 5,000-10,000 votes,” they said. Phagwara: The Nakodar Sadar police have booked a travel agent for allegedly duping a man of ~2.70 lakh on the pretext of sending his son abroad. Nakodar Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kulwinder Singh Virk said the suspect had been identified as Ramesh Kumar, alias Mesha, a resident of Malluwal village falling under the Mehat Pur police station. In his complaint to the police, Khyal Chand, a resident of Bhodi Pur village, told the police that he paid ~2.70 lakh to the suspect to facilitate his son’s migration abroad. However, he neither sent him abroad nor returned the money. The police said a case under Sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (breach of trust) of the IPC and Section 13 of the Punjab Travel Professional Regulation Act — 2014 had been registered against the suspect. OC After shoulder injury, powerlifter makes a comeback Tribune News Service FRAUD: TRAVEL AGENT BOOKED 11 drug peddlers nabbed in Nawanshahr within 48 hrs Deepkamal Kaur Nawanshahr, July 12 The police arrested 11 drug peddlers, including three women, and recovered 40 grams of heroin, intoxicant tablets and injections from them in Nawanshahr district in the past two days. The police arrested five persons from Nawanshahr city, Aur, Pojewal, Rahon and Kathgarh today. Cases under the NDPS Act were registered against them. In Aur, a woman drug peddler, identified as Palo, was arrested with 15 grams of heroin and six intoxicant injections. The police arrested two suspects Khushkaran Singh and Satnam Kumar - from Nawanshahr city and Pojewal. They recovered 50 intoxicant capsules from Khushkaran and 30 capsules from Satnam. The police also arrested two persons from Kathgarh and Rahon and recovered intoxicant capsules and tablets from them. Heroin, intoxicant tablets, injections seized from them The police arrested six drug peddlers, including two women, yesterday and recovered heroin and intoxicant tablets from them. Two women were arrested with 15 grams of heroin from Sadar Banga. The suspects were identified as Nimmo and Babbli. As many as 10 grams of heroin was recovered from Nimmo, while 5 grams of heroin was seized from Babbli. Recently, a purported video of a woman drug addict from Nawanshahr was also circulated on social media. According to family members, the woman’s mother was also a drug addict. The video was of Gudpad village in the Aur block. The police said the village was a drug hotspot. The woman was later admitted to a de-addiction centre in Kapurthala. He is excited for the championship, but at the same time worried too. Dinesh says he does not have enough resources for training and bear the expenses of foreign travel. Bhagat qualified for this event after winning a bronze medal in the senior open category in National Powerlifting Championship held in Bengaluru recently. In January this year, he got a gold medal in the 120-kg category in the GPC World Powerlifting Championship, organised by the Global Powerlifting Corporation in Sonepat. I improved my fitness level and returned to the game in October last year. My first event was ‘Khedan Vatan Punjab Diyan’ where I had bagged a gold medal,” he said.
