Investigating officer Balvir Chand said the accused Hardeep Singh was a resident of Gandhi Chowk, Shahkot. The police said the accused was wanted in a case of murder registered in July 2006.The police also arrested PO Harjot Singh, alias Jota, a resident of Dhando Wal village, wanted in a case of drug peddling. OC FOUR BOOKED FOR CHEATING Phagwara: The police have booked four Gujarati persons for duping a Nakodar resident of Rs 1.19 crore. According to a complaint, the accused had lured Paramjit Rajpal, a resident of New Aadarsh Nagar, Nakodar, cheated him of Rs 1.19 crore on the pretext of investing money in the share market. The incident, which took place at Chick Chick restaurant, was captured on CCTV and has gone viral on social media. The altercation occurred late on Monday evening as the restaurant was closing for the night. Employees were packing up, with the manager Rahul attending to the cash register, while a customer was still inside. Due to the presence of the customer, the restaurant’s shutters remained open. According to Rahul, an ASIranked police officer entered the restaurant, questioned the late closing and then forcefully dragged him out by the collar before slapping ■ The altercation occurred late on Monday evening as the restaurant was closing. A team of the Phagwara police rushed all four to the Civil Hospital, Phagwara, where doctors declared motorcyclist Mandip Rattu (35) and his nephew Vinay (5) brought dead. Paramjit Kaur (35) and her daughter Harmanpreet (5), who sustained serious injuries, were admitted to the hospital. All were returning from Jalandhar after meeting their relatives. The police have registered a case against pick-up van driver and handed over the bodies of the deceased to their family members after autopsy. Promises made by candidates, regardless of the election outcome, to serve the residents appear to have been forgotten as residents continue to face severe water contamination problems. These issues have led to a rise in health hazards such as diarrhoea, stomach aches, vomiting and fever. The affected areas, including Kabir Vihar, New Gautam Nagar, Mata Sant Kaur Nagar and the surrounding localities, have seen a significant increase in cases of diarrhoea and stomach ache over the past five days. Approximately 25 cases have been reported and residents are demanding a permanent solution to the sewerage problems that cause dirty water to mix with their drinking supply. The residents claimed that while a team from the Civil Hospital frequently visited the area to distribute chlorine tablets and ORS packets, they were seeking a lasting solution to ensure the clean water supply. “What we want is a solution to the problem and clean water supply,” they said. They reported that 155 persons in 35 houses at New Gautam Nagar, 130 in 51 houses at Kabir Vihar and 41 houses in Pink City and Bank Colony had been vaccinated. They said the municipal corporation had been informed and steps been requested to prevent further cases. Asha Devi, a resident of Gautam Nagar, voiced her frustration: “During the campaign, big promises were made by CM Bhagwant Mann, but within a week, it feels like we have been forgotten. All attention and resources allocated to Jalandhar West have disappeared. We want the new MLA to address these issues before the situation worsens.” Other residents echoed similar sentiments, urging newly elected MLA Mohinder Bhagat to take immediate action. They called on him to engage with municipal corporation officials to resolve the water contamination problem and deliver on the promises made during the election campaign. Notices issued to MC staffers Jalandhar: After water sample in Rattan Nagar street and a few surrounding areas of Jalandhar West recently failed the purity test, the MC Commissioner swung into action and issued show-cause notices to the employees, who have failed to address the water contamination issues. A notice has been sent to an employee of Water testing lab for delay in submitting the record of failed water samples with the MC. “There are areas where water contamination has been found and the notices have been issued to those MC officials dealing with the area,” a senior MC official said. He said there were 10 sensitive areas in the Jalandhar West, including street number 7,8,9 of Shri Babu Labh Singh Nagar, street number 4 of Rattan Nagar, Bhargo Camp, Abadpura, Sangat Singh Nagar and Rasila Nagar of Basti Danishmanda. Jalandhar, July 17 Following the arrest of Harpreet Singh, the brother of Khadoor Sahib MLA Amritpal Singh and his aide Lovepreet Singh as well as a Ludhiana-based supplier Sandeep Arora by the Jalandhar rural police, a fourth person has also been nabbed by the police — who had been aiding drug supplier Sandeep Arora. Identified as Ludhiana-based Manish Marwaha, the fourth accused in the case was arrested on Monday, after the police carried out an investigation into Sandeep Arora’s financial linkages. Till now, the five persons nominated in the case are: Amritpal’s brother Harpreet Singh alias Happy, a resident of Jallupur Khera in Khilchian, Amritsar; Lovepreet Singh, a resident of Cheema Bath in Beas, Amritsar; Sandeep Arora, a resident of Itanagar at Haibowal, Ludhiana and Manish Marwaha, a resident of New Atam Nagar, Ludhiana. The trail has also lead to a fifth accused, who was facilitating drug supplier Sandeep Arora. He is yet to be nabbed by the police. Officials said the probe led to Manish Marwaha after an investigation into Sandeep Arora’s bank transactions. He had been arrested with aide Lovepreet Singh and drug supplier Sandeep Arora (from whom they had bought the Ice after payment via Paytm). Upon investigation, Sandeep Arora, who had allegedly supplied narcotics to the duo, had also been arrested on Friday. According to the police, Harpreet and Lovepreet had procured drugs from Ludhiana and were apprehended by Phillaur police’s patrol teams, on way back to Amritsar, on the highway, in a parked car. The police is looking into the causes and links of why the Amritsar-based duo procured drugs from a Ludhiana-based supplier and who were the other buyers and/or clients of Sandeep Arora. SSP Jalandhar Dr Ankur Gupta said, “A fourth accused Manish Marwaha has been apprehended in the case and Sandeep Arora’s financial linkages are being investigated to uncover the forward and backward linkages of the drug supply trail.” While a Phillaur court had remanded Harpreet and Lovepreet to 14 days in judicial custody, the Jalandhar rural police (Phillaur) had obtained three-day remand for Sandeep Arora and Manish Marwaha on Monday. Emphasising the importance of the workplace safety, he instructed members to ensure that all offices established an internal committee as mandated by the Act. Verma also highlighted the need for strict action against firms failing to adhere to these provisions, reinforcing the administration’s com- mitment to uphold the rights and well-being of employees. This initiative aimed at fostering a conducive work environment. During the review meeting, the ADC issued guidelines that any establishment with 10 or more employees must constitute an interim grievance committee. Jalandhar, July 17 Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal today reviewed preparations to curtail stubble burning practices in the district and urged farmers to join hands with the state government to save environment from ill-effects of stubble burning. Chairing a review meeting at the District Administra- c m y b tive Complex, the DC said several stubble management projects were under pipeline in the district, which would utilise paddy straw, therefore, helping farmers manage crop residue. He directed officials to ensure speedy installations of these units so that they were ready to serve during the paddy season — October and November. Terming I-KHET mobile app a revolutionary step where farmers could check the availability of machinery at the block level, he said a large number of machines, including super seeder, mulcher, RMB plough, happy seeder, are available which could be viewed through app. The DC said a multipronged strategy ranging from awareness campaigns to action against defaulters would be adopted to curb the practices. He further asked officials to keep close tabs over farm fire incidents by ensuring physical verification in each case. He directed SDMs to ensure all combine harvester were equipped with Super SMS technique and take action against those not complying with the directions. The DC also urged all stakeholders to make coordinated efforts in preven- tive measures to witness significant reduction in such cases. He also asked to carry out awareness drive among farmers. He further announced a ‘Vatavaran De Rakhe’ award for both panchayats and farmers. Similarly, farmers would also get this award along with incentive. Such persons would be honoured on the district-level Republic Day event.
