The innovation involved in the helmet is that it immediately detects the injury and even alerts the hospital or medical centre nearest to the accident site for seeking immediate help via a message service. The patent has been granted to Dr Sudhir Sharma, Dean Academics and Head of the Electrical Engineering Department, and Dr Vinay Chopra, Head of the Computer Applications Department, by the Patent Office, Government of India. “The invention addresses the critical issue of road safety, especially for two-wheeler riders who are more vulnerable to severe injuries in case of accidents. The AI-based smart helmet is designed to detect injuries and generate realtime data using embedded pressure sensors,” explained Dr Sharma. Both the professors had been working on the project since 2020. They had applied for the patent in July 2021. “Availability of pressure sensors or their cost was not much of an issue. Making the helmet AI-enabled and doing all the required programming was a bigger challenge that we had to work on. The AI helmet will generate an SMS which will go to the staff of the nearest hospital and alert them about the accident and the emergency help required. We have developed a prototype of the helmet. Having just got the patent, we are in the process of contacting some leading automobile manufacturers and helmet manufacturing companies for its commercial production so that it could be launched in the market,” Dr Sharma elaborated Dr Chopra added, “The smart helmet utilises AI to analyse pressure data from sensors placed on the left, right and top of the helmet. This allows for accurate detection of injuries that might not be visible externally. In the event of an accident, the pressure sensors measure the impact, and the AI module processes the data to identify potential injuries.” Migrant found dead under mysterious circumstances Tribune News Service Jalandhar, July 18 A man identified as Raju, a migrant labourer from West Bengal, was found dead under mysterious circumstances near the Bashirpura bridge, close to the railway lines on Thursday morning. According to preliminary reports from the police, Raju had been employed as a watchman in the Bashirpura area for several months. GRP police station in-charge Palwinder Singh said the body was found in a pool of blood with visible multiple injury marks. “We are investigating the case from all angles and further proceedings will depend on the statements from the deceased’s family who will arrive by this evening”, he said, adding that they were exploring various leads. When questioned about the possibility of murder, he maintained that it was too early to draw any conclusions. At this point, nothing could be said. “The death could be accidental, especially since the construction work was ongoing near the site. However, we are meticulously examining all aspects, including potential personal rivalries or enmities Raju might have had”, he added.
