Guests, who confronted the vandals, were reportedly thrashed and their vehicles damaged. The police have arrested four persons and booked 18 in the case. Those booked have been identified as Nikhil Chaudhary, Baaz and Brahman Rana of Banur; Chetan, Vishal and Jassi of Dhakoli; and Samma, Kapil, Kuldeep, Rakesh, Deepak, Channi, Harpreet, Prince, Lokesh, Sahil Thakur and Deepak of Zirakpur. The incident is said to be the fallout of a tussle between two groups of extortionists. Investigating officer Jaswant Singh, along with a police team, reached the spot and began investigation. There have been many cases of extortion attempts by gangsters in Zirakpur in the past. On July 18, 2022, around 10 hoteliers complained to the police that they were forced to pay varying sums as extortion to the Ankit Rana gang. A day earlier, the Zirakpur police and the Anti-Gangster Task Force had nabbed three members of the Bhupi Rana gang from Baltana after a shootout. They had come on two motorcycles to collect Rs 50,000 monthly “protection money” from hotel owner Faizal. Gangster Bhupi Rana was running an extortion racket from jail through Ankit Rana. The accused, identified as Sonu (29), is a resident of Kajheri village. Depender had reported that his house was burgled on May 31 while he had gone for work. When his family returned home in the evening, they found the house ransacked. A laptop, an LED set, electronic items and cash were stolen from the house. A case was registered at the Sector 31 police station. Sonu was arrested and the stolen items were recovered from him. Besides, 14 mobile phones, three LPG cylinders and a bicycle stolen from parts of Chandigarh and Mohali were also recovered from him. The police said the accused was earlier booked in a case of theft in 2023. There are many government houses with sanctioned power load from 0.5 to 1 kW. According to officials of CREST, a solar power plant would be viable only at a house with the sanctioned load of, at least, 2 kW. People living in gov- ernment houses will not have to spend money from their pocket on the installation of solar power plants and power produced would be used by them free of cost. The cost of installation would be borne by CREST under the Central scheme. There are a total of 5,611 government houses of different types in the city, of which solar plants have been installed on 2,782. The solar plants are being set up under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijali Yojana. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13 had announced the scheme with the aim of providing 300 units of electricity free of cost every month to one crore households under the scheme. Most of the government houses are located in Sectors 7, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 27. The administration has shortlisted a total of 30 companies. Under the scheme, a private house would get benefit from the Central Finance Assistance up to a maximum of Rs 78,000 in the installation of 3 kW plant, which costs nearly Rs 1.50 lakh.
