In the video, two men can be seen writhing in pain as a cop, alleged to be ASI Jaswinder Singh, punched them. The cop is seen kicking one of them repeatedly and the man lying on the ground, crying in pain. While the police term the matter an issue of ‘road rage’ which escalated, the ASI’s action raises questions on the conduct of the men in uniform. The police said the ASI was deputed at a naka in Bhogpur when three men on a bike jumped the naka and allegedly didn’t stop despite the police indications. Chasing the youths, the ASI caught them and beat up two of these youths. The incident took place on Saturday evening. Depending on their shape, eco-crusader Harpreet Kaur uses these as flower vases or cases to store artificial jewellery. Plastic pet bottles at her place also do not go in scrap. Instead these are collected, stuffed with waste wrappers and converted as eco-bricks to be used during construction work. Take a peep into the house of the head of the Design Department of Kanya Maha Vidyalaya at Surya Enclave here and one can spot several items which have been upcycled. A range of cushion covers, wall hangings, paintings and table tops aesthetically displayed in the drawing room of her house have been created out of upcycling technique for the designing of which she has even earned 30 patents. Not just that, her wardrobe, which seemingly has all designer clothes, are actually made from cuttings of old sarees of her mother or her own 20-year-old collection. “I do not dump any clothes. I keep preserving these. In fact, I even go to the boutiques and collect cloth wastages from these. Various Migrant nabbed for setting house on fire Phagwara, August 12 Following a complaint lodged by migrant Krishna Kumar, a resident of Shiv Puri locality in Phagwara, the police have arrested an accused, identified as Surinder Kumar, a resident of village Kot-Rani on the charge of setting entire household goods on fire at the house of Amrita Devi, younger sister of the complainant. SP Rupinder Kaur Bhatti said the complainant told the police that his younger sister Amrita Devi was away to Bihar to meet her relatives and in the wee hours of August 10, the accused entered her house with the motive of theft but set it on fire. A scooter (PB-36K-4806), a refrigerator and washing machine were damaged in the devastating fire which broke out, said SP Bhatti. Tribune News Service Kapurthala August 12 Raising serious concerns over a communication from Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, issuing a warning to the Punjab Government to terminate eight highway projects, Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh on Monday said it was a serious matter and the government should deal with it on a priority. He appealed to Gadkari and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to treat the matter with all seriousness and bring it to a conclusive end to the benefit of farmers and the state. “It is not a law and order problem. The real issue is that farmers are not paid adequate compensation for the land acquired for the highway proj- Rana Gurjeet Singh ects and it has led to unrest”, said Rana Gurjeet Singh. He asked the state government to resolve the matter at the earliest. Eight national highways of the total length of 293 km with a cost of Rs 14,288 crore are under construction in the state. “As per an Act of Parliament enacted in 2013, the farmers will get four times the cost of market value to rehabilitate the landowners who have been divested of their source of livelihood, but in case of farmers in Punjab, the market price is inappropriately valued”, said the Kapurthala MLA. He asked the state government to implement the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, in true spirit for proper acquisition, resettlement and rehabilitation of the farmers. “The state government should hasten the process of arbitration as thousands of cases are still pending. There is a time frame mandated to settle the arbitration cases within six months, but the cases have been pending for the past two years”, pointed out Gurjeet Singh. Talking to the media, Grewal said the Centre should stop step-motherly treatment with Punjab. He also condemned the AAP government for not providing the required land to complete these projects. He raised questions over the ‘poor’ performance of the AAP government. For Varun (12), Suraj (12), Damanjot Singh (19), Ujjawal Singh (18) and several other players getting trained at the Mithapur hockey academy, it was a red letter day. They were unable to contain their excitement as they met Manpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh, hockey legends from Mithapur who have won the bronze medal by defeating Spain. The village youths raised their hockey sticks in respect of the duo to the village. For Damanjot, son of a marginal farmer, Manpreet Singh has been an inspiration. “I grew up watching him play near my house and now we all watch him on TV sets. Manpreet Paaji is my everything,” he said, adding that he wanted to be like the former captain of the Indian hockey team. Son of a daily wager Suraj said he had been learning hockey for the last four years. “I didn’t want to miss the chance to see both of them. We wanted to give him a warm welcome,” he said. Varun,12-year-old son of a tempo driver, said it was an unforgettable day for him. “A few days ago, I watched them on TV Now, they were in front of us. . I felt nervous too,” the budding player shared his emotions. Right now, over 40 players have been getting trained at the academy, the youngest one is four-year-old. Kuldeep Singh, a coach at the academy, said the young players got ready early morning and reach the academy, even before the Olympians.
